This competition or rather year is where a new era for beatbox arose, and Codfish was one of the reasons. He’s known as the first musical beatboxer to win GBB. FYI, in a beatbox perspective, a musical beatboxer is someone who usually sing or have a “melodic” approach to their beatboxing. The other main counterpart is the technical beatboxing, which refers to beatboxers who are more drum-sounding by using kicks, snares, difficulty and fast beats. There are a few other subcategories, but these two are the two main ones. Most of beatboxers fall under one of the two or a mix of the two. Another thing I want to add is that because a musical beatboxer has such delicate and intricate beatboxing, it is very hard for them to translate their beatboxing and perform it well on a live stage, a battle in this case which is even harder. So Codfish really did revolutionize the scene by giving rise to a new meta. I’m so sorry that I wrote this much.
@@kev4366 the way I want to argument this is by giving an example of Napom. He is known as the King of liproll or somewhat worthy of that title. He was the first one that made the liproll a famous sound. Was he the first person to do liprolls? No. Same goes for Codfish. Am I saying that Gene is not a great beatboxer? Hell no. But the impact that Codfish gave to the community was somewhat equivalent to Napom’s liprolls.
You seem to know a lot, I was wondering when you can see the guys counting, like Bataco did at 12:40, is it because he's repeating some parts which I'm guessing technicals beatboxers don't like?
@@volnas1665 In this exact case Bataco is calling him out for doing the same beat twice (which it really isn’t true in this case), but you can see he shows multiple fingers in 12:53. With the multiple fingers he’s saying that he is repeating the same beat more than two times, which is obviously not a good thing. But again, it’s a false accusation, Codfish is developing one melody (No Diggity+using Bataco’s whistle as a counter), and that is normal because it would make sense for a round to have its own theme. But also, Codfish nevertheless proves to Bataco by immediately changing the tempo of the beat and then switching to another beat. (12:55, 13:04, and 13:13 are the other variations that he showcases) And to answer your question about technical beatboxers, the frustration is not exclusive to technical beatboxers. Any type of beatboxer can call their opponent out for repeating previous beats. In most cases when they get called out is because they’re recycling beats from previous rounds, which usually shows lack of diversity or the discipline of showing different melodies, but in this battle the call out was “ineffective”. The reason why it was ineffective is because Codfish is not repeating beats from previous rounds, he was developing a beat for that one round.

Context for the last round "Money back" is a cover D-low and codfished worked on together (Invented the beatbox version together) so when D-low used it, codfish did his part of it. Super cool little bit of banter between friends!

Great reaction Shane. Although for the future, I would suggest to watch the battles itself not the compilations. There’s just so much more context and you’re missing out a whole lot. For example, the round that Codfish did that laser-whistle sound, that was a rebuttal of one the opponent’s sound. And also, the previous round, Codfish did a chill and slow round, so his opponent called him out right after telling him “I came for a battle man”. And then Codfish responded with arguably the best beatbox round in history for many reason. Hope this helps.

Codfish is awesome, and definitely influential, but he's not known as the first as the first musical BBXr to win GBB, Gene Shinozaki won it in 2015.
