This is stupid; SAS is on a roll today. First Donovan Mitchell being Jazz best player ever and now Shaq not being the best in the NBA at a point in his career. At one point, there was literally nothing you could do with Shaq in his prime. Very few got the best of him.

He was the best player from 98-99 season through the 02-03 season. But in 03-04 he averaged a humble 21ppg and 10rpg. Kobe, and Tim Duncan both had a better years going forward starting with the 03-04 season... Then LeBron, Bron was the best player in the NBA since the 04-05 season his 2nd year in the league.

That's true and he was on the list because that was back when he was in his 4th season in the nba but he wasn't able to attend the ceremony because he had a ankle injury a couple of days prior to the event but shaq felt uncomfortable with the fact that he was listed as one of the. 50 greatest players because he felt like it was to soon to be on the throne with all the other nba greats which is understandable because in his mind it's like I'm still a baby and I have a long way to go and that's just goes to show you how great of a dominate player he was.

Yes, Shaq mos def was a natural athletic freak, but that's not the same as being highly skilled. The former is largely due to luck (genetics) while the former is a combo of both luck and hard work (Duncan). To me, that's why Duncan was better.

From 2000-2002 he was undeniably the best player those years. In 1999, Malone won the MVP but you could argue that Shaq was the better player. In 2004, Kobe was the better player in the regular season but in the playoffs and especially the finals Shaq was better (so that year is a toss up).

Well you could argue TD won 1999 and in 2000 he had an leg injury. But in 2003 he beat kobe and shaq without any all star teammates. And in 2002 in the WC Duncan outplayed shaq by a wide margin. So you could make an argument for shaq being the best player 2000 and 2001. From 2002-2005 Duncan and the Kobe
@@kobischpiek8520 I'm a big TD fan, but counting the number of all-star teammates is not the right metric. This isn't 2-on-2 basketball. You have rosters that go 12 deep in the playoffs, and you have to take into account coaching, chemistry, etc. Sure, the Lakers had the two best guys on the court, but those two guys don't play 48 minutes per game, and there are three other guys on the court who can elevate or sink you. And let's not forget how mediocre the 2003 Lakers were on defense, whereas the Spurs were elite.

A lot of ppl don't realize this but the three championships in a row that Shaq and Kobe won, the finals was in the west when they faced the spurs and that one year when the Lakers faced the Sacramento Kings, if the Lakers didn't get past the Spurs or the Kings in western conference playoffs then those teams would have more likely win the championship against whoever came out the east and I heard Kobe was the best player in those series vs the spurs not shaq but I'm not sure who it was vs the Sacramento. Kings.
But the bottom line is that this shouldn't even be a question..of course he was if anyone has fallowed his career..

It's a dumb point to make anyway. Shaq did get fat and lazy after the 3peat, to the point the bones in his feet started crumbling under the weight. It has no relevance on whether or not he was at any point the best player in the NBA.

If you don't believe it you never watched Shaq play. He easily gave up career everything for 50% of the seasons he played. He dogged it. But that Shaq. He got by on what he had. Never working to get better. It's why his career when it went south fell of a cliff. Everything he couldn't do was magnified. Yes Shaq could score in a phone booth. Was he the best at it? No Wilt was and it wasn't even close. But Shaq was good in his phone booth. As long as you didn't ask him to play defense, rebound or for much of his career actually run the court.

I agree that from 2000 through 2003, Shaq was the best player in the NBA. Duncan and Kobe were more skilled, and historically should probably ranck higher, but in those three years he was the best player in the game. And in those years AI, KD, Vince Carter, and a host of other guys, were pretty darn good.

The most ripped ppl in the league are between 8- 12% bodyfat. Under 8% 24/7 is where you're doing more bad then good. Fat is good. Too much and too little is bad

Totally agree. I think Joe Johnson is a good example here. Obviously a ridiculously skilled player, but that didn’t ever translate to anything more than lukewarm success, and he was never really at the top level of the player hierarchy.

Shaq was the only player that if he got to his "spot" (the entire paint. He was not just a dunker, his footwork and baby hook was amazing) you just hoped he miss. I remember watching teams TRIPLE teaming him.

First off, shoutout to Perk for saying something smart for once. He actually appreciates Shaq not just as a big body, but for how incredibly nimble he was for someone 7'1 330lbs. And appreciates his passing. Great Stuff, still not forgiven for saying Middleton is Batman though
Shaq in 2000 lead the league in PPG with 29.7. This was on 57.8% TS, the 12th best in the league. The only other player with even 26 PPG in 2000 was Allen Iverson, who had 28.4 PPG on 49.6% TS. The highest scoring players with a higher TS% were Ray Allen (22.1 PPG,) and Alonzo Mourning (21.7 PPG).
7.6 PPG is larger than the gap between Lebron James's PPG in the year he was one vote off being Unanimous MVP, and that years scoring from Brook Lopez. This shows how peak Shaq was so much better of a scorer than anyone else in the league it wasn't even close
He also lead all centres in APG during that season and while was not an all time great passing big, he was still VERY GOOD as a passer, even relative to PGs of the time. He was Second in the NBA in RPG, 13.6, another massive string to his bow. Finally he made 3 all defensive teams from 2000-2003, and while he probably got in for popularity rather than actually being a top 2 defensive centre in the league, he still was a positive on that end despite not being at his Orlando levels.
Being a good defender, very good passer, and great rebounder, while being the best scorer in the league by miles is surely enough to be the best player in the league
