I am guessing Clara has been around music for a while. Seeing someone 8 years old so into Scarborough Fair is a pleasant surprise. It is a mature and complex song. You go girl!
Your baby sister is absolutely adorable.buddy she looks up at you with so much love it's beautiful.my sister is 9 years my junior our relationship is the same 50 years later.youre blessed enjoy it
Clara is too adorable! She reminds me of Natalie Wood in "Miracle on 34th Street". I kept waiting for her to say, "I told him I'm NOT an animal, I'm a little girl." I love this song. Thanks for doing it!
The lyrics are about a man trying to attain his true love. In Medieval times, the herbs mentioned in the song represented virtues that were important to the lyrics. Parsley was comfort, sage was strength, rosemary was love, and thyme was courage.
In medi evil times and Renaissance Parsley actually stood for "Removing Bitterness" meaning here in the song "removing love sickness" and Rosemary stood for "Loyalty, Love and Memory" not just love...sage and thyme was right. The original version of that song from the 16th century had 11 verses..started with 4 sung by the man then 4 sung by the woman (each of those 4 verses was refering to one of those herbal meanings) and finishing with 3 sung together..and it´s about a former love couple who is challenging each other in order to find back together again..therefore removing bitterness, showing inner strength, showing loyalty, love and remembering how it once was being together, and then having the courage to get together again. Just mention that because you brought up here the meaning of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.
The requests he's asking to be relayed to his former lover are impossible to achieve. So perhaps he doesn't want her back, more a lament for what can never be made anew.
Rosemary also means remembrance, and it's quite fitting for the song. You often find different herbs mean several things at once, depending on the context and the time.
Clara is very charming, and the way you interact with her is really sweet. The second set of lyrics came from an anti-war song called "The Side of a Hill" that Paul Simon had written a couple of years earlier. A couple of things give the song its unusual feel (for modern-day popular music) - it has two melodies set in counterpoint, and it's in Dorian mode. Other songs in Dorian mode include Eleanor Rigby, Oye Como Va, and What Will We Do with the Drunken Sailor.
And it's kind of grey (Dorian Grey, yes I know what a Dorian scale is). Another recording that Simon and Garfunkle which is similar is Five O'clock news/ silent night which is them singing silent night in and out of the background and foreground while an actual recording of the five o'clock news is played, kind of chilling
Scarborough Fair is a 'Traditional' English Folk song - by including in the 'Copyright' for this song, Paul Simon made himself persona-non-gratta on the English folk scene.
You, my friend, have a WONDERFUL brother and sister relationship going on there! And she is such an adorable sweetheart! I know you both will look back on these times as priceless, treasured memories. And her knowledge of old school music, plus her perceptive keenness astounded me. Way to go! By the way, the picture on Clara's shirt of Angelina Jordan shows another plus for good taste!
First time here and well Clara is adorable, duh. I hope you grow up to be a big star Clara. Wow. I have heard and loved this song so many times and I never knew it was about that.
The Scarborough Fair part is a traditional English song: it is a lovers trial - the lover is challenged with completing impossible tasks to prove their love. Each verse describes one of the tasks.
Clara is a ROCKER!!! Daniel you are an awesome older brother by expanding her musical knowledge but she seems to prefer hard rock. Simon and Garfunkel are always awesome. This song takes me on a journey and I get lost in the story. Stunningly beautiful song.
Very cool that your younger sister likes a Simon and Garfunkel song. Their songs transcend the generations. We must preserve these songs so they can be enjoyed for many generations to come.
It’s one of those songs I like to call ‘hauntingly beautiful.’ I discovered Simon & Garfunkel when watching the iconic film THE GRADUATE at age 15. I was never the same! It opened up a whole world of music to me, which was no easy feat before the internet. You’re both sweet and wise beyond your years. I wish you both much success.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to the late 60's, after the song was first released. My father had gotten tickets to the Simon & Garfunkel concert at a venue on Nob Hill in San Francisco, as he knew I was a big fan of theirs, as was he, and it was my birthday. The show was just the two men, no band, on the stage with two stools and Paul's acoustic guitar. That was it for the whole concert, and it was one of the most amazing shows I've ever been to. They did this song without the back story tune, and without the excessive length. It was beautiful and moving
I am so surprised to see such a young person singing an old song that meant so much to me when it first came out! Kudos to your parents - you give me hope. Thank you both.
I sang in choirs for a number of years. A year or so before this Simon and Garfunkle version came out my high school music teacher had us do an acapella version of Scarborough Fair with sweet 4-part harmony. We were all really excited when this version came out and became so popular. Suddenly us geeks were cool...for a little bit. This is such a beautiful song. Their harmonies still give me goose-bumps. The canticle about fighting/war was not part of the version we sang. I don’t know if S & G wrote the Canticle or not.
When I was in 5th grade my teacher, Mr. Smith, introduced us to this song and many others. I'm 62 now and still realizing more and more, just how much I owe Mr. Smith.
Simon and Garfunkel and Clara!!! Beautiful voice, Clara, and Daniel you are to be commended for how the two of you get along together on this video! Clara, you enjoy that pizza, now! Love you two channeling the dwarfs at the end, BRAVO!!

Not so. Canticle was written by Paul Simon for his English "Paul Simon Songbook" and was then called "The Side of a Hill". Garfunkel never wrote an S&G song, though he sometimes insisted that he contributed arrangements. That's also doubtful.
@@billythedog-309 With all due respect, I don't think that's a fair assessment. Beautiful song from when I was in school.Liked it then and still like it and I thank you two for playing it. She does not have music for grown up people but g or children as well. The song is actually a combination of 2 songs. Scarborough Fair and Canticle. The former can either refer to the old traditional English song which list a series of impossible tasks asked of a man in love to perform, or to the actual Scarborough Fair in Yorkshire. And Canticle is one of Paul Simon's own anti-war songs. What do they have to do with each other? Hell, if I know. But musically they create a nice counterpoint to each other, so it sounds awesome.
YES!!! I’ve been waiting for you to react to this, one of my all-time favorites! And thank you for your interpretation! Even though, as I said, it’s long been a favorite, I blush to admit that I never really thought about the meaning of the lyrics.☺️ So thank you, and how adorable is your sister? Greetings from Florida.
Mesmerizing in a beautiful, perfect way. Thanks for doing this. I just love this song.... that just takes me away to a good place. Simon and Garfunkel have LOTS of really wonderful stuff.
There was a long running controversy over this track. The main song is indeed traditional and not copyright, but the guitar arrangement was by English folk singer Martin Carthy. He showed Paul Simon how to play it when he was living in England a couple of years earlier. Carthy never sued but the issue was well known in folk circles. Simon did eventually acknowledge it some decades later and paid Carthy a voluntary settlement. That said, the S&G further arrangement and additional canticle is very lovely.
Wonderful reaction from a Beautiful Family pairing. Scarborough Fair originated from a royal charter granted by King Henry III of England on 22 January 1253. ... Variations of this song date back to the 1800's....and you see depictions of medieval Englishmen from the 13th Century there...
I found a version of this song on UA-cam with Andy Williams singing with Simon and Garfunkel. Andy Williams is a famous crooner from the 50’s and 60’s. Great version! Nice vid Daniel!
What a beautiful little girl! It lifts my heart and my spirit to hear and see children as young as that angel appreciating excellent music. Good job big brother. I am an old man, but I had two younger sisters. Do your best to shield her from the shittyness of the world like I did.
Ever since it came out this has been one of my favorite songs. So unusual to have a popular song that’s a canticle. That’s what you refer to as the song in the background.
Awesome! Clara is so sweet my diabetes just spiked (and I don't even have diabetes). Great job, both of you! Daniel I think you would find the movie "The graduate" a great watch. Don't be discouraged by how old it is, it is a classic, both funny and kinda heartwrenching and the songs fit just perfectly into the movie.
Precious. Love seeing your lil sis singing along. A “canticle” is like a chant w religious or biblical reference. If you check out the live performance from their Concert from Central Park, it’s just lovely. It’s just as beautiful, but 1) you get to see them performing it live, 2) it’s shorter, and 3) they don’t do the canticle part. (I love that part, but I guess they need either a studio or a third person.)
Terrific analysis of a song I had "long ago forgotten" simply because it seemed ubiquitous. I saw the title and thought 'Oh. I know that song. Moving on ... wait! There's Clara in the thumbnail!' Glad I watched because I had never paid any attention to the literal subtext. Wow! Such a pretty song, but also subversively meaningful as a gentle rebuke against war. As usual, your perception and study enrich my enjoyment of music. Cheers! (EDIT: Oh yeah. Love the Angelina Jordan T-shirt!)
The most beautiful version of this song, we used to sing it at school (60's) its the only song I learnt to pick out on the guitar, so pretty and quite deep. Lovely to hear Clara sing along.
Back in the 1960's upstate New York had an annual fair in the town of Scarborough a section of Briarcliff Manor. It was a combination of farmers market with a combination of Wiccan, Taoist and other gentle philosophies. It had a sort of back to nature foundation with herbs and spices grown by local people, cloth weavers, bees wax soaps candles and the like and they grew it to a sort of Renaissance festival. It was a celebration of simple natured people where chalks would be provided to children with the rocks in the park or any surface for that matter as an opportunity to see the simple innocence of another era painted out by the hands of children. In it's most popular time it coexisted with the Vietnam War in which innocence was most vulnerable. Paul Simon was showing how at the worst time in a couple of friends life there was still a window back to beauty and love. He wanted to show the poignancy of how love stayed with someone even if it was lost love. To gain perspective you might want to watch the movie HAIR which started out as a Broadway play about the wonderful and the terrible things of the Vietnam War era and how the Hippies fought back against it with spirituality, love and kind, open investment into life. I use to go to the Scarborough fair before it stopped some time in the late 1980's (incidentally a place in Texas has a Renaissance Festival to this day) Yes it is a soldier speaking to his friend of his last wishes but it has so much more between the lines. It was an indictment of the era of pointless loss.
Blown away by Claras engagement, at that age the focus of attention is so frantic so to see her not only holding interest but also investigating deeper is joyous to observe, I love Daniels energy too, such balance on such young shoulders, very uplifting video, thankyou x
Yes, part of this song was heard by Paul Simon in the UK performed by Martin Carthy who later on appeared in some early Steeleye Span and has put out a prolific amount of Traditional Music over time!!! He also worked with the late Dave Swarbrick later of Fairport Convention 2 amazing British Folk Rock bands, both still going in some form!!! Hi to Clara as well!!!
I've said it before, you could put the best video ever on UA-cam and you'll still find people that will dislike it. So far, 5 people have proven my point.
If you haven't seen it, definitely check out the classic movie The Graduate (1967). This song (as well as others by S&G) was a perfect marriage of film and music.
A great movie, but for a reactor it may spoil so many first time hearing reactions. So much landmark music in the film that deserves a reaction. So a dilemma for a reactor to handle,

You're a good big brother. You both had something to say. And, yes it's probably my favorite Simon and Garfunkel song. And I have them all. Good pull.
Nice to see great older songs revived. Love how you go through the lyrics. There is so much great genres of music to hear!!! Enjoy 😊
The song goes back to 1670 in England!
Such a beautiful song. Thank you , Daniel and your lovely sister Clara. Greetings from Brazil
The wonders of multivocal overdubbing. Simon and Garfunkel were masters at it. Also love the harpsicord in there as well.
This longer version is from the Graduate soundtrack.
Great song. Thanks for the video. And Clara is so precious...awwww!!!
Beautiful harmonies from some early S &G. Yeah the Graduate, when her age is appropriate.
The most beautiful version of this song, we used to sing it at school (60's) its the only song I learnt to pick out on the guitar, so pretty and quite deep. Lovely to hear Clara sing along.
Beautifully done.
ty both
You guys are great!! God Bless you both!..
The very first Simon and Garfunkel song I ever heard, and I was about your sister's age when I did. They changed the way I hear and understand things.
This song is so atmospheric, it almost makes me feel like I have synesthesia, because beautiful imagery immediately comes to mind as I'm listening.
I use to go to the Scarborough fair before it stopped some time in the late 1980's (incidentally a place in Texas has a Renaissance Festival to this day)
Yes it is a soldier speaking to his friend of his last wishes but it has so much more between the lines. It was an indictment of the era of pointless loss.
They sang together in high school. They called themselves.Tom and Jerry.
SIMON AND GARFUNKEL, "SCARBROUGH AFFAIR"... THESE TWO WERE AN AWESOME DUO.. HARMONIES SECOND TOO NONE...
Someone is having an Affair in Scarborough? Name names, my friend ?
An exquisite version of this song. I used to sing along with it too. Love your reactions. Thanks 🙏
Also YOU are adorable! You are so good with your sister! You're going to make a great father some day!
One of the first films I went to see and introducing Dustin Hoffman :)
A great movie, but for a reactor it may spoil so many first time hearing reactions. So much landmark music in the film that deserves a reaction. So a dilemma for a reactor to handle,
@@johnd8892 Indeed,My Friend...
Love the fact that you had your sweet little sister with you and Scarborough Fair is the first song I learned to play on my guitar when I was about your sister's age!
This was such a delight! Watching a big Brother share music with his little sister. Warms my heart. Hi Clara! ❤
So sweet you two❤ got my love for music from my big brothers too🤗
Awww everyone should have such a caring and attentive big brother!!! I love your reaction videos but.... I really appreciate your attention to the details and conversation with your “co-host”. Your videos could be used as a training on how to be a kind human being. I’m always impressed with your amount of knowledge for your age. Literally my second comment ever and you got both. Please please keep up the good work!
I remember singing this as a kid around Clara’s age, possibly at school (my teacher was a bit of a hippy) I’ve always liked the song
