    Well to votes are in, YOU are one awesome woman Tammy. It is heart warming to see that not only did you go out to overnight, you stayed the whole night even when conditions were not optimal. I for one would definitely like to follow you on an exercise program, maybe if I have such a wonderful and inspiring slave driver I can stick it out, as seeing you is motivation enough. Hope conditions improve quickly for you and the rest of winter is more enjoyable. Take care, stay safe and stay warm.

    I'm new here. But I think I LIKE YOU and your VIDEOS! I'm not that far away here in OK. BUT our 2 states and governments are so much different. Colorado is quickly becoming Cali "light", with all the rules.
    I like a fire for winter camping. To me it's the focus of the trip. BUT, if one is testing their own personal endurance you have certainly proven that. J.S.: I've been miserably, desperately, cold and I hate to see anyone suffer....especially someone, I'm beginning to make time for in my life😌, Tammy!

Green lil bows of pine under the tent as a thermal break... Ground cloth is a real must.. 8 mill visquene sheet is about 4 oz. N well worth it for a winter camp.. Have a cocoa with Harvey's in it!! That will warm you!!! Lol!! Thanks for sharing! ATB👍😎👍!!

    Hi Spirit, I love your tenacity for the outdoors. I like how good you look when you wake up freezing in the morning, lol. I have the most respect for you, I give you the Honorary Alaskan Sourdough title. If you are interested in camping somewhere that doesn't have a lot of regulations and you are allowed to pretty much camp anywhere is The Adirondacks in Upstate NY. It is so beautiful there especially in the fall and Winter time. Have you ever done any hot tent camping besides Spirit Forest? I can hardly wait for the cabin build, I am waiting patiently.

    Yay, you survived. A good reason to ask a few more questions of the park peeps. The views up and back were, as always, spectacular, but your time there was a real struggle. Glad you were able to stay warm in spite of all the trials and tribulations of this overnighter. Hope you shared the info about the deep snow over some of the campsites especially #5. Who knows there may be someone else who decides to do an overnighter up there, it is possible, after all you did it. Thank you for surviving and taking us along. I think a lot of lessons learned this trip. Peace.

    Awesome! I love it when anyone goes out winter camping in the extreme negatives it's very challenging. I agree not much fun when it gets extremely cold, drinking water freezes fast, camera batteries don't like it that cold. Just have to a positive attitude and enjoy the adventure.

    Wonder what the guy who "didn't think you could really be a backpacker", would think about you learning to build your own house??? I remodelled my own kitchen. Ripped out the cabinets and put in new ones and new flooring, too, and built a dish closet from scratch. Hah!! Also built a cabinet with shelves for the bathroom sink.

  • @janetallen5846
    @janetallen5846 4 роки тому

    Tammy, I think you really need a solar battery charger. I have seen some small ones that may not be too heavy. usb string lights could also be run on them , I-phone, and maybe camera batteries. A folded pc of heavy duty alum. foil can be configured into a light compact wind screen for the stove. I have even woven twigs into screen for wind, and stacked small rocks in a semi circle around stove for wind protection. Sleep mat can be checked for leak location in a bathtub. If it's a hole, silicone seal, if it thru the fabric, flex seal MIGHT work. I haven't tried it for this. Keep on hiking. Janet

    I remember you telling us about the one mattress which had to be blown up and it leaking regularly. I hope you can get that one fixed and can put it in use again since you need it to stay warm in the wilderness. It sounds like it is nice there for camping in your area and reminds me of one mountain we have here in Arkansas, but an hour away from where I live.

    Hi Tammy. First thing I would consider is a bush buddy wood stove. Not really an open fire, and way more reliable than a canaster stove. Next, I've never used hand warmers or body warmers. I don't know how much heat they put out, but would it be worth it to sacrifice a couple to wrap your water bottle to keep it from freezing? And if they got warm enough, put it in your sleeping bag. And lastly, find that someone special to cuddle up to, mmmmm.

  • @shogun666able
    @shogun666able 4 роки тому

    Forgot to mention a simple tarp set up over the bivvi bag if you go that way, keeping it dry should it rain or snow, over it being 100% windproof and rain proof itself anyway, but a basha over the top again, gives you room to play and you have it beat. Small and light to carry and warm and dry all night. even if pouring with rain or snow or down to minus 18 which an artic sleeping bag is rated at I believe, but I have never been cold in mine ever. Good job getting out in the winter! I have an old Sierra Designs "3/4 season convertible" tent that I bought way back in 1997. I'm pretty sure that it isn't all that waterproof anymore, and the waterproof coating has actually begun to break down and feel a bit tacky. However, I still haven't thrown it away because I've discovered that it still makes a great winter tent. The ability of a full, double wall (without mesh openings) makes the tent surprisingly warmer on the inside than the ambient air temp outside. I've even used my candle lantern inside to help add a bit of warmth. (You gotta love 1990's era "backpacking" gear that weighs a ton!)

    • @SpiritForest
      @SpiritForest  4 роки тому +1

      I loved my candle in my tent.. I got rid of it.. but thinking of bringing it back.. I remember warming my hands over my candle. Yeah I need to get a winter tent at some point.. right now my extra funds are going to other things.. but it will happen some day. Looking forward to a camping video from you.. I check on your channel every once and a while. Cheers!

      @@SpiritForest Yeah, you have to fund a new, permanent "tent" so you can quit dragging down everyone's property values with a yard full of poop :-)) I just wish that there were enough free minutes in the day to be able to be able to keep up with watching everyone's videos that I enjoy!

    Winter mittens! And warmers inside. Fingers would have been saved. I use them in the north deer hunting in Michigan winters. Keep your fuel cylinders in your bag, body warmth helps them work better. Use rocks and para cord to hold stakes down in frozen ground. Peace

    Yes,, pretty area,,,,I agree the history of the different areas we choose to explore are so much more interesting later in life,,than when we were in school......but remember what you learned....there will be a quiz.....lol..
    Lots of small game in that area,,still lots of Bobcats,,Fox,,squirrels (your nemesis) ..and many game birds too........makes me assume that one or more of these are what the hunters are after,,all big game seasons are closed........
    Dry oats for breakfast ?? I guess....if they're good enough for Missy ,, must be OK........right??
    Had plenty of issues with sliding off Therma-rest mats as well,,at least with Mummy bag,,not so much with canvas sleeping bags......found that carry along 1-2 full size trash bags in pack,,cut bottom off one,,put around pad and sleeping bag,, like a neck buff,,then pull second bag around pad/bag at bottom,,,,prevents sliding off ,,or having to use a couple web straps (also kinda works)...when you slide off and hit cold ground,,you really know it.....
    For me,,dry, heavy wool socks and down booties work great for the feet in cold seasons.....Thanks for sharing your experience.........plans for more like this??...........Always,, Stay Safe and God Bless.......

    I stumbled on your video's while looking for Viking garb. Now, I watch your video's all the time if I am sitting an surfing the web. I watch them on tv.....wanted to say that trying to find a man that likes to do what you do is going to be hard but certainly worth the wait. I was looking for a hiker/kayaker/target shooter, etc and it was VERY difficult to find anyone. FINALLY I found a guy and we had a great time for about 5 years, we went our separate ways but have remained friends for another 10! I certainly could not do (nor do I want to do) the hardcore things you do ( I am 63 now) but I sure enjoy learning and listening and watching about the outdoor stuff! Also too, I think your kids are lucky to have a roll model like you. Good job on so many levels!

    Not a happy lady in the cold it seems. If your asking you have to much air around you so ditch the tent and get a Dutch Army Goretex hooped Bivvi bag. Army Artic rated sleeping bag in that with your insulation underneath and you will be as warm as toast and dry all night. Bin liner for your gear although their is room in the Bivvi for a day pack and your boots. Smaller is better, less air to warm or chill whichever, closer to the ground is better still as the wind blows over you rather than at you in a tent. Winter girl needs proper winter gear. Tammy, Cool video. Cold more like it.
    Next time U g ok deep backcpoumntry backpacking/ hiking leave most of It unnecessary gear in your vehicle ( If and when an emergency strides you have access to the extra gear ) so you're not unnessarily weighing yourself down.
    Go to hru Amazon and purchase at least 4. 100% wool blankets. 2 for under U in the tent and 2 over your sleeping bag. ( Believe me the extra weight is well worth the t r are of of weight versus warmth )
    Leave the Blow ups for the pool.
    Or better yet gift them to an old flame, as their blow up doll!! LOL LOL!!
    Don't rely too heavily on the body and handwarmers I. ( They have a really short lifel span ( I have in the past found chemical handwarmers that were sold defective. Or at the end or near the end of their usefulness.
    Your best tool is your brain. So stay sharp, and stay safe in the woods. See U down the trail.

    A Tent gives you as much protection as pulling your Underwear up over your head.

    OK, your choices are forcing me to ask you to consider the following: You know you CAN survive winter camping EVEN with a wet down sleeping bag! That is amazing!!! 👍👍You learned what your limitations are for you and your equipment. Like your lighter not lighting. Yes you love the outdoors and hiking. Since Colorado bans winter fires, which is really essential for winter camping, what is the continued value for you to do Colorado winter camping??? You can still enjoy winter hiking. ANYONE who watches you consistently KNOW you are a MOST EXCELLENT back packing hiker/camper (except Bozo the dating clown hiker wannabee)! Hate to see you put yourself through such rigor, unless maybe you are into self flagellation??? Poor attempt at humor.

    "is what I asked the ranger station". See, THIS is why guys hate to stop and ask directions. It is not a macho thing, we just know how reliable those directions usually will be.(g)
