Maybe a-love-that-could-never-be is what makes this movie so good, like they're meant to be together in some way but they're just too different that it could never work.
A big reoccurring theme in Miyazaki’s movies is that sometimes, despite how hard you try, you don’t get the girl or guy. You don’t end up royalty. You don’t end up anywhere except back and where you started. And that if that happens, it’s okay 😊
Arrietty and Sho’s relationship always warms my heart they were so beautiful together i wish arrietty didn’t have to leave and that her and Sho could stay with each other forever

Just like you, I was so sad at the end... Until I realized that Sho was about to get operated and so, may actually not survive at the end of the movie. Not only was he going to never see Arietty again, but also the world itself. Then I got REALLY sad.
Shawn would definitely not let them go away and let them stay in dollhouse if he was sure he would survive after his operation.. then ofcourse he doesn't trust that granny and he doesn't stay there either... Remember he came for only few days. Ghibli studios might have thought of all these. 😅
Such a sweet movie and, the more I listen to it, one of my favourite Ghibli soundtracks. Everything is just so soothing, heartfelt, and rejuvenating. Oh, and incredibly sad at times, too.

nope, I agree. I'm a grown-ass man and when I watch Miyazaki movies, sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed and teary-eyed. They are truly art. The scenery, music, and animation transports you to another world. I enjoy his movies so much because I feel that they pull me back to a time in my childhood where my imagination was endless, and captures that feeling again. It's like a warm blanket. I'm sorry I didn't get to see these movies as a kid, I would've watched them over and over again. Hopefully my young son will get to enjoy them this way :)

Also, that mean this didn't got used in the actual movie. Unfortunately, the CD is no longer available for sale. If anyone owns this disc, please consider uploading the rest of the album for others to enjoy. This version has a Celtic vibe, while the official one leans more toward a classic orchestra sound. Personally, I prefer this version.

The movie TELL you can love anyone no matter what his age, his race, his difference but that not everyone will accept it and you'll need to take a decision regarding that relationship. The thing that saddens me the most is that at the end of the movie, Arrietty never saw Sho ever again. That can mean two things: Arrietty and Sho never try to look for each other again, or Sho didn't survive his heart surgery.

@@anelf3767 I like to think the operation did cure him and the bit of him remembering is like when he’s an adult or maybe in his late teens. It’s a beautiful story as without Arrietty Sho wouldn’t have the motivation to live.

Not having friends for most of his life. In the book he contracted rheumatic fever, which affected his heart; he lived a solitary, bookish life. Then he met Arrietty (in the movie they're the same age, and Arrietty has never known anyone except her parents). It's an unlikely, doomed romance, but in their own mismatched way they fall in love before they have to part. Beautiful movie!

The book is "The Borrowers" by Mary Norton. Sho/Boy does live, but I don't think their paths ever cross again.
