I am interested in detecting very low noise both inside my house and outside. I need to try replacing the mic capsule with a targeting laser or even better use IR.
Where did you retrieve that parabolic trough? What microphone capsule did you choose? I want to do the same test but I want to use a '20 cm plastic funnel. :) Interesting cue in your video but need to think about adding a "reverb" to better improve reception. Hi.
I took the "dish" from some of my kid`s toys actually. It is not the perfect shape to do it because it is not parabolic, but spheric shape. Anyway I wanted to make some primitive experiment to find out if it`s going to amplify the sound. And the result show it clearly that there is significant amplification, but there are also many imperfections in the sound. It sound somehow distorted (you know what I mean). I tryed to get the best focal point for this project to get themost of it. I must admit it`s not perfect, but it is some basic point for my next project for long didtance mic with very large parabolic dish from old SAT TV receiver. The capsule here is very important, I used the AOM-5024L-HD-R . I had to order these from the USA (I live in Bulgaria). These capsules are brilliant in my opinion :) Keep in touch ;)
Now make 3 more and place them facing 12oclock 3oclock, 6, 9, ....connect them to a raspberry Pi and program something that documents DB measurements....or have each connected to a cheap cellphone with a DB measuring app.... or have it set up to spin(fast) and utilize the sensors in a cellphone and a data logging app to measure DB and current phone orientation...you can have a doppler sound radar direction finding device...locate all the annoyingly loud or specific noises. Do it! I dare you to!
Fantastic. Sent it to my little brother who loves physics and programming. He may try to make something similar, for fun, echo maybe. thanks for sharing
It's a condenser capsule pui audio aom-5024l-hd-r. The plate was laying around in my garage. It's a simple 10 cm sphere. It's all about finding the focal point, so this could be any dish and a little bit of experiments with it ;)
Sounds great with voice tbh, in a room that is made to dampen the sound and with two smaller capsules you would have nice stereo mic although the bowl would make it sound a bit bigger
I ordered the mic here: eu.mouser.com/ProductDetail/PUI-Audio/AOM-5024L-HD-R?qs=j%252B1pi9TdxUZP%252BNk1SD4XMw%3D%3D&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_Oi-jvapggMVF0dBAh3xZQG5EAAYASAAEgKDtPD_BwE
The focal length is HALF the radius. It is not obvious where inside the mike the focal point must be, so some adjustment will be required. With such a deep curve you have spherical abberation, preventing a sharp focus. I suggest a much larger, more shallow reflector. Also, rule of thumb for parabolic reflectors is minimum 10 waves diameter. Do the math.
What is the name of the device where you connected the mic?, and why you used it? What is the mic performance without it? Could you make a quick video to capture voice(conversation/talking) on a reasonable distance?
I will try to make new video of creating this, I just have to find parts needed. I used voice recorder Zoom H1N to record the sound. It gives better performance for the mic definitely
Please could you share the name of the toy or a picture of it just to have an idea of the plate? Also if it's a 10cm sphere, what s the distance between the mic and the bottom of the plate?
I already disassembled everything. I don't remember dimensions but anyway you need to experiment because it will be different with different microphone and setup. Good luck my friend 🤞🤞🤞
It is a DIY project. I am not selling it because I live in Bulgaria and shipping costs worldwide are insane. I can guide you to make it yourself if you want to ;)
Sweeeeeet Microphone, Hwo Did You Calculate The Focal Point? It Should Be Calculated And Used Right, Teh Effect Could Be Much More Better Just Like With Antenna Dishes, Finding The Focal Point Is Super Easy, Just reflect Any Light In The "Bowl" Take A Sheet of Paper And Put It To The Bowl Not Obscuring The Light And You Will See Where The Smallest Point Of The Light Is And Thats Where The Focal Point of The Parabollic Bowl / Antenna Is, Thats The Point Where You Should Mounth Antenna Element or Microphone, ! Next Thing, You Should Put The Mic On Some Coaxial Cable And Putt Some Choke On It Right Before The Mic ELement Itstelf, That Would Improve Lowering Noise .
I was experimenting with the focal point. It was kinda tricky, but eventually it worked. Thank you so much for the great advice ☺️ I should definitely use this light method for my next microphone project. Huge thank you again 🤗
You didn't record any voices. You should have had some people stage of conversation measure out the footage and say this is what their conversation sounds like at 100 ft or 50 ft 200 ft. My cell phone picks up all the outside sounds just like your thing. I'm sorry but this video was useless.
It was kinda experimenting with this set-up. There is significant amplification, compared to my camera built in mic, but I've managed to make huge success, using an old satellite dish and properly mounting the microphone in the right position. You are right that this one makes the sound very odd and probably not usable for recording speech.
@FixitEasyDIY it works, but I feel like the ambient amplify mode on my phone does a better job. Still cool object to modify and tinker with in spare time, might just need to experiment with different sized components for a bit
@@MattQrillz You are totally right 👍 I've tried to get much better amplification by using old satellite dish. It is actually an offset dish and I could get sounds from more than 200 meters away. There is huge distortion, but it is a good starting point for further experiments :)
el espia se va junto a la calle mojada en la que van y vienen autos, se graba las pantuflas pero jamas lo prueba en alguien hablando lejos. obvio era un engaño y lo consigió...😑
What made you make 1 in the first place? And, you had so many great opportunities to demonstrate its power with people standing and having conversations...but you just moved it around randomly at random cars...what gives!?
I know my presentation is very poor. I am sorry about that. I was making this video in time when i didn't know much about filming and generally UA-cam. But I assure you, this is a very good pointed microphone 🙂

So called focal point is "in the middle of the middle" . It`s not that important to make it super precise. Best way for home DIY is to try to make it by experimenting. Unfortunately there is no easy way to make it, but the good news is that it is really not that big difference if it`s not perfect. Just try it. Bigger bowl would give you better results. I wish you all the best my friend! ;)
@@mangakadomingos292 I was thinking this was easy to repeat. Just follow what I was doing in this video. The most important part is to find the focal point of the dish. It turned out that it's best to experiment until it gives significant sound gain. If you need some further information I would be glad to help with anything.
Well done my Friend🙌🙂🤝
It's really good to hear.

It amplifies the sound from the distance. It amplifies the noise too, so keep that in mind :)
Mix outdoor sounds with high volume noise.
Nc bro
I can hear the whole country with that mic lol
