I was not expecting a trailer from a movie from 1993 to have boobies flying in it 😮

I read the book in college. Evidently, I didn’t see eye to eye with the director either.

Don't underestimate the past. Check out some 1970's trailers. Boobies all the way.

@@virginiarios9883 I think they mean that there was nudity shown in the trailer for the film..... I still think that doesn't happen very often since trailers generally air on regular TV where anybody can see them.

why does a movie based on a chilean novel, that speaks mainly about chilean society not have any chileans in the cast?

    • @caroc4327

Because it wasn't wokey Hollywood yet and they cast the best english speaking actors because that's who brings ppl to the theaters. When's the last time a Chilean movie became famous worldwide?

@@caroc4327fame shouldn’t matter. Midnights children was a film about Indian gaining independence and became a film that unfortunately flopped but was made with the intent of turning the book into a film, truth and all. Another example is the upcoming Netflix show of 100 years of solitude which is gathering a huge fan base and was made to portray Colombian history. Why take this book about Chile and history and fill it with a bunch of white people that have no roots to the country? There’s gonna be a clear disconnect between the actual point the book was making and the movie

@@athf4ever780 first, because they’re good actors, and fame does matter because it brings more ppl to see the movie. You can argue with that but movies are a business, also the more ppl watch it, the better for the author etc. All that being said, Allende was happy with the movie and the casting. You can’t make all ethnic stories be portrayed by native ppl. I’m Colombian and I don’t expect that from the upcoming movie you mentioned.

How would've they sold tickets at the time? I'm not defending the film because I love the book but you're logic is a bit flawed. I
This film is a product of it's time in the nineties and how lack of diversity on screen. While I'm not a fan of the film it helped me discovered the book which is my favorite and the genre of Magical realism.overall. I understand you're frustration, I share it too to a fault but what could you expect from a film of a 90s produced by Weinstein.

I don't care what the critics say, I LOVE this movie, yes, it is missing key characters, but it contains the novel's essence IMO.

It was in "The House of the Spirits" that I fell in love with Jeremy Iron's superb acting opposite Meryl Streep whose spirit appeared to her daughter (Winona Ryder) while imposined to tell her that "Death comes no matter what; you must fight to stay alive" .. and she lived. But it was her husband whom she couldn't forgive until her death, which ultimately broke him. What a strong cast. 1993
