Alright, I might be a little biased bc she's my favorite, but Claire is definitely at the top. She was a total badass without any FORMAL training when she first encounters the outbreak.
This was Sherry's gery first mission as an agent. In the beginning, Jake has been making some parts of her mission difficult, despite her being so compassionate and selfless. In the end, even though she was exhausted, Sherry was still trying to protect Jake from the B.O.W whose trying to capture/kill him. The beast was only targeting him, but she still was trying her very best to protect him. It can also be a metaphor for him finally saving him from his selfish deeds, and showing him to embrace compassion.
I understand why that scene can be confusing. I was confused myself when I played this game as a kid. It can mean two things. One, Jake is thanking Sherry for continuing to protect him throughout her this journey, despite the shenanigans they've been through. *Not to mention, this is technically her first solo mission as a government agent* Second, it can be a metaphor for not giving up on him.
