  • IMO, Leica lens is a jewellery as much as it's a photographic tool. When I'm carrying one I'd get this silly sense of exclusiveness no other brands could offer. I know this is stupid and shallow, but yet I do enjoy, even by a little, this sense of privilege Leica gives me when I'm out shooting. I guess I'm truly impressed with the Leica's marketing team, they've successfully showed me what branding really is.
Now, as much as I want to get more Leica lenses which I can't afford, it's more important to use them than to be a collector. Would be nice if the new 75 Noct doesn't cost an arm a leg plus a kidney.

A beautifully-crafted manual Porsche would stall and perform terribly for a bad driver, but it would be like amazing in the hands of a professional driver. If the images don't come out with sharp focus then please do not blame the lens. The lens is just glass and metal; but Leica makes the best glass and metal combination out there with the ability to offer corner to corner sharpness. The lenses don't promise magical sharpness to people who don't know how to use a manual focus lenses. The branding aspect is certainly true too, but the quality is also there for people who know how to take photos correctly.

My first Leica body was the Monochrom, very strange choice to many people especially as their first Leica. But I fell in love with that camera after watching the video Leica shot in Iceland. Though I thought I would regret buying it just from looking at their ad, this camera has become since day 1 of using it, my favourite camera of all time! I say that as someone who was using the 'mainstream' camera brands like Nikon and Fujifilm. It's been 3 years now since I had the camera and I'm still in love with it. I bought a M10 after it launched thinking it would surprise me just like the monochrom, but it didn't. The monochrom is in my opinion the best Leica digital camera ever.

For me getting a Leica reinvigorated a passion for photography at a crucial time when I was losing interest (as can happen when you make your hobbies your job). Forcing myself to go back to manually adjusting everything made a huge difference. It actually started with... not a Leica, but a Voigtlander Bessa-R that I loved (but it broke), and I resolved to save up for a digital Leica for work. Picking up my Leica and shooting with it still makes me happier than when I pick up a DSLR or a Sony mirrorless to shoot with, and that makes all the difference.
No regrets. One of those "buy once, hurt just the once" purchases. But I'm not really a collector or anything, I own four lenses for the mount (two Leicas, two not) to cover the gamut of lens range I need, and that's about it. As far as whether Leica lenses make a huge difference, depends on the lens. I don't love my 90 Cron (it's an older one from the 70s), and may look for another option for a 90mm lens. My 35 Lux, on the other hand, I will never, ever sell. That thing is by far the best lens (for me) that I have ever used. When I'm in practice (give me a week in Hong Kong, say) I can hit f/1.4 focus while shooting quickly on the street, it's so intuitive for me. Though my eyes are getting worse, so... maybe not.
Is it perfect for everything? Certainly not. I miss autofocus for certain applications (try shooting photos of an energetic dog at f/1.4 manually) and I sometimes wish I could focus closer than .7m. But I still love my Leica.

Nice video. As for the focusing, use zone or hyperfocal focusing. Preset the distance, and then raise the camera to your eye and shoot. The camera becomes a point and shoot.

I recently just got into Leica. I bought an M3, and right now I just got a IIIF which is in the process of being looked at by YYeCamera. But I did not buy these cameras simply because I thought I could get the best possible image quality. I bought them because of the history they carry, the effort that went into making these cameras, and the beautiful craftsmanship. I bought them because it is a very different experience using them compared to your typical SLR, and quite frankly I love it.

Photography is an art, some may think camera body and lens combo from nikon, sony, canon, fuji produces very nice photo while some just think the ones you're showing above are more appealing. At the end of the day to me, photos are representation of a memory / story in which the photographer wants to remember / deliver. Don't be too overly bothered about what gear you use to shoot, enjoy the process and experience of recording down the memory.

Good question. I bought Leica because quality (you expect it for the price) but also SIMPLICITY! I guess I'm getting older and I don't want to remember thousands of menu options. Leica is tough, simple and quality.

Your problem of your Leica camera being “ out of focus “ may actually be that the camera needs a specialist technician who knows how to “CALLIBRATE LEICA CAMERAS” ( correct the focusing that is off ). Very few people know about this type of problem and you have to thoroughly check the credentials of the camera technician. I had this done to my Leica camera bodies 3 years ago.

Some of simpler Leica lenses have a great look, but they shine on film. Modern sensors pick up every optical flaw and aberration, and are best suited to high contrast, ultra sharp modern computer designed glass. The grain of film complements the subtle rendering of the Summarit and other single coated or uncoated lenses. On digital they just look like mush. Pretty sure Junku Nishimura uses a Summarit or similar older style Leica lens on a film camera.

I do think that there is a certain softness to the old Leica lenses. That can appeal to a lot of people. I have heard of fashion photographers using old Leica lenses just for the sake of their effects. Gives it more of a dreamy "romantic" feel to the photos. Good lenses doesn't automatically mean the sharpess IQ. I feel its more about unique characteristics that makes the photos different from other newer "sharper" lenses.

    My dear friend,
You can spend a fortune on equipment but if you do not who to make a decent photo it is utterly useless..
Do not blame the camera or lenses but get a decent training to step up your skills! Yes Leica lenses are, too, expensive but in the right hands they deliver a virtually unmatched quality. And certainly a RF camera is not for everybody. It takes quite a lot of practice and skill to get used to handeling it. I know many professional photographers who never got the hang of it.
First learn how to drive before you step into a F1 car.....
And yes I do understand that you are being sarcastic and try to make a point.

I somehow like the murky and muted look of the images, the low contrast, dark shaddows and greyish highlights. It is an interesting alternation from the crisp, clear and high-contrast imagery you see in so many other channels. I assume this is more about the editing applied. Can you tell us more about your workflow?

The images you are getting are similar to the ones I get with vintage Leitz glass. Flare, they are uncoated, low contrast, typical of the range and you need to practice focusing too! They lack the nasty clinical look of modern glass and that's why people like me love them. The lack of contrast is often made worse because of haze on the glass but easily remedied by a service or easier still up the contrast a tad in post processing but before you do that note the lovely grey tones.

Idk man I get wat you're saying, but the reason I like shooting with my Leica is because I know that it will work how I want it to. I shoot film so it keeps my mind at peace. Another reason is just that I like holding it. So ya it's super fucking expensive, but so what if I'm going to use it all day.

i would say that your range finder needs to be recalibrated. Or if you have trouble with it, maybe get a EVF, and practice with it. would say that there is no way that with a Leica, after 1 year or so of use, anyone takes pictures so out of focus as yours..

If you buy collapsible mount lenses to use, be careful that the rear of the lens does not ram into the inner "box" of the camera body when collapsed. This is a particular problem with Canon rangefinder bodies after the IV series because of the light baffles added to the later bodies.

Although I must admit that there is a small part of me that likes the adoration people tend to give you when they see me shooting with a Leica, that's not why I buy them. The truth is that I like owning cool things. I do the same thing with books and drum machines that I do with cameras and lenses, I see something cool and I buy it. Also, I do event photography and I shot with DSLRs and mirrorless autofocus cameras (including the Leica SL) so when I want to slow down and enjoy my time shooting, I grab one of my Leica M's and have fun shooting.
I also own the 50mm F1.5 Summarit and I love the way it renders on the Monochrom. I wish I could find a reasonably priced lens hood for it like you have.
