My grandmother had a family of raccoons that would come in the house to eat. It always makes me smile to see things like this and reminds me of her.
I had one we took care of when it mother was killed on the street. We kept her for about a year until we had to let her go. We did everything we could to prepare her. We let her go on land far away from roads. I always hoped she did well. The owner of the land said he'd see her once and awhile months later. So I'm sure she lived her life as intended. Was such a fun creature to have around!

You should get involved in wildlife rescue. It really helped me at a dark time in my life when I volunteered full time at a rescue years ago. Just this weekend I saved a baby raccoon who had been hit by a car and left in the road, I kept him over the weekend until I could get him to a rehabber. He had likely been orphaned already. He was very sweet and never showed the slightest fear or nervousness.
A few weeks earlier I had pried 5 pinkie baby possums from the pouch of their dead mother left in the road. 2 miracles back to back, because it was a miracle in both cases they had only been hit once.

when raccoons are raised from birth with humans they usually end up actually quite loveable and bond very strong to people and other pets in the home. They arent as far from domestication as other wild animals are.
Dad's teaching his son a trade so he will always have a job to take care of himself & Dad too.

And this is why I want a racoon, hands down best sense of humor, I've helped rehab baby racoons multiple times I love them and one day I will get a rescue who decides they don't want to leave and then my life will be complete ❤
I heard they'd always want to leave around their adolescent stage, and that is in preparation for them when they reach adulthood when they are on their own. If you want to keep them, you have to be persistent into having them learn that they don't need to be independent, like a 36-year-old, unemployed grown man who still lives in mom's basement

This reminds me of my dad in every way. The type of work he always did, always physical but fun (at least for us kids as it was always something different going on) and the animals being attached to him! He had a pet squirrel he raised from a baby when he found it injured at work one day. He named it Chip from Chip And Dale Rescue Rangers AND because it loved chocolate chip ice cream! He also partially domesticated Raccoons, skunks and owls that would come by in the evenings and chill and eat.
These are actually Rocket’s childhood home movies, and how he learned on-the-fly engineering, applying it to his future weapon creation skills.
