- “The photos I took in Afghanistan are lying in front of me. I peer into the faces of those who were with me there and who are so far away from me now, into the faces of those who were dying right next to me and those who were hiding behind my back. I can make these photos larger or smaller, darker or lighter. But what I can't do is bring back those who are gone forever.”

"In 1980 when I first arrived in Afghanistan, most of the soldiers were my age: they hadn't yet turned twenty. But in 1989, on my last trip to Afghanistan, I noticed with horror that the army was ten years younger then I. One generation had entered Afghanistan. An entirely different generation was leaving it." Artyom Borovik- "The Hidden War"
And now the Americans do the same, some of soldiers leaving being born after 9/11. Long winded occupations of rugged nations like Afghanistan fail, no matter how righteous the original cause or grand the initial victories. The greatest and most capable armies in the history of human violence (the US and USSR) and the greatest economies of their times have failed against the poorest nation of Eurasia, if there is some great lesson in the futility of conquest in there, I am certain it will go ignored by those who aught heed it.
@@jamesstudholme3161 I was born not 3 weeks after 9/11, and some of my childhood friends are in Afghanistan today. And unless something changes soon, I'll probably end up there as well.
@@jamesharding3459 I mean the US is pulling out rn so unless something else unexpected happens you should be safe from that particular warzone, some other intervention however.
@@jamesstudholme3161 the USSR didn't collapse for a couple of years until after they pulled out. The British Empire took a process of decades to slowly wither away after they pulled their troops. Afghanistan was just their canary in the coal mine.
America will probably be the same. It won't suddenly cease to exist in 2023. But it will become increasely more and more politically divisive and secessionist over the next couple of decades to the point individual states, regions and territories start seeking independence.

@@seline_hunter9122 One thing to note is that most of the AKM and early soviet weapons the Mujahadeen were using were actually given to them by China, as the Soviets weren't using those weapons during their invasion.
Which if the rumors about China intervening come to pass that will be the biggest ironic twist of it all.
@@kazak8926 at that point during the late 70s and early to mid 80s the Chinese for all intents and purposes are enemies with the Soviets. They fought a brief border war in 1969, then in 1979 the Chinese invaded Vietnam which was Soviet ideological ally at that moment. When the Chinese had border conflict with India, the Soviets supported Indian government against China. Then China decided to arm the Mujahideen against the Soviets to bog them down.

I have a good friend who lives in Vladivostok, his father served in Afghanistan at the age of 25. He was there from the initial invasion in 1979 all the way to the point of them leaving in 1989. Crazy man even had the guts to serve in Chechnya twice despite being in his early 40's by the first in 1996. He was 51 when the second one was through with. When ever I would talk to my friend and hear him speak to his father, he sounded like a very grizzled old man. His face was painted with many creases and bore the look of somebody who had seen unimaginable things that most human beings should not have survived. He never spoke of it very often if at all. Whenever we would listen to songs from his era and he by chance overheard him, he would visibly pause in the background as to soak it all in and remember those times. God only knows what he saw and what he did in those hellish places.
