Alas, no discussion of me in this video. I'm still over $3, too: $3.10 for my The List printing by TCGPlayer market price. All I want for Christmas is to be a budget card again.
I pulled him from a booster and my roommate couldn't stop laughing because he looks alot like me, and I am scandinavian. Definately making this Deck :D
I strongly suggest you add some hexproof or redirect effects, bounce or protection from color also does the trick. Which is protecting your precious commander from stupid little spells like Darksteel Mutation or Lignify that don't kill him, but leave him useless on the board.
@@Volkbrecht that’s an extremely good point and I’m definitely going to be working on that! I personally added season of growth that I thought it would be on the deck list. Also question for the fighting mechanic, does Hans do damage back to the creature fighting him?
One reasonable upgrade I would make for this deck would be "Silverclad Ferocidons" because if it fights Hans, you make each opponent sacrifices a permanent. Another budget card I would put into a Hans Eriksson deck would be "Verdant Rebirth" because if you know Hans is going to die you can put it into your hand instead of command zone.
I would love to see a section added along the lines of “alternative brews”!! Perhaps some cards that you wouldn’t add to your personal build, but could be effective components in a different brew of the same commander. Especially since you only do one deck tech per commander, seeing these alternative routes to take a commander would be awesome insight. For example for this episode, cards themed around multiple attack steps for Hans, or cards that get value each time creatures fight would be cool things to see, even if they weren’t in your deck!
Note on Etali - it doesn't trigger the turn Hans puts it into play, which I think makes it a little bit worse thematically. Same mechanic as when it's put into play via Ilharg; it entered the battlefield already in the "attacking" state, so on attack triggers don't fire.
Etali, Primal Storm will not trigger if he comes from the Commander tho, no creature with "whenver this creature attacks" will acctauly, its allready tapped and attacking when you place in into the battlefield
Hans isn’t my cup of tea, but I LOVE this new deck tech format. Taking the time to focus on the cards that are really important rather than giving them equal time with the more generic cards in the deck. this is a green deck so it has a pretty typical ramp package, so it’s nice hearing more on the cool fun stuff and less about grow from the ashes for the millionth time.
Just got a foil yesterday and I'm embarrassingly excited to make my deck lol My husband, 2 sons (12, 15) and I are constantly working on new builds to crush eachother with lol your content is awesome and a staple watch for us as a family! Last night we geeked over opening a commander Legends box together. My son got a Vampiric Tutor! Let the building begin!
3 months later and this deck is easily my fave in circulation. So fun and exciting to play! Always surprise my group with interesting combos and answers ♡
I really appreciate you getting these decks certified on playedh. It both helps players add to their available decks and eases the mentors' job since they don't have to check a bunch of people submitting your lists every week.
When Etali comes in tapped and attacking with Hans, it won’t trigger the attacking trigger with Etali for the turn it comes in as it as missed a declare attack step✌🏼 That is something to consider when playing Etali. Unless I’m wrong of course.
Really like this format! I’ve just built a Hans deck built around the fighting theme with a lot of built in protection and this has given me some helpful ways to tweak it!
Well well well, what a coincidence since I just pulled this yesterday. (May have forgot about it due to my excitement of a Jeweled Lotus being in the same pack)
Got my own Hans deck going because of this vid. I love it, and the reaction of my opponents when I get a big creature off the top of my deck for free is priceless. And as a bonus I get to have an incredibly handsome and fashionable guy as a commander. Fear the beard!
He is a great engine for enrage creatures or those who do things on combat or damage, getting them to trigger twice (once from him, once from combat) and circumventing their high cmc. If you were to build with more recursion and around them, 'Hanz, Dinosaur Hurter' could be a ton of fun. As for general things, slagwurm armor is a +0/+6 for cmc 1 and equip 3, it would vastly increase his survivability.
Idk if it was fate or what, but this is the only deck tech I really wanted you to do! Do you have any replacement suggestions to try and get it to the 25$ mark?
I feel like there's some value in running cards like Shifting Shadows, Divergent Transformations, Lurking Predators, and so on, with a bunch of efficient creatures that either pump everyone, have a way to boost their own power, or make more creatures (like Tana or Pylath).
I love the flavor of this commander, and because I think it's funny that Hans gets caught unawares of Godzilla or Colossus of Akros hiding in the bushes, I play Ambush Viper as an anti-strategy to illicit a laugh.
Be careful with triggers that happen "When this creature attacks..." because you need to declare that creature in the Declare Attackers step. I mean, those creatures may be good next turn, but for example when Hans triggers and gets an Etali tapped and attacking, that first time Etali won't trigger so you won't get those juicy free spells.
A friend made Hans his commander in a sealed setting, he put a 1/1 deathtouch in his deck, in the first attack with Hans, he gets the deathtoucher n looses both creatures
Hey, see what you can do with Kodama of the East Tree before he goes up in price. His best partners might be Sakashima or Thrasios, and those are out of your usual price range... but has an immediate, absurd combo with Toggo (if you can solve the card draw in Gruul, doable but janky), and he also pairs well at medium power level with some of the other budget-friendly partners like Eligeth or even the new Kamahl.
Like the way this is set up! I enjoy the emphasis on combo pieces and more important cards in the deck. If you do another one of these, could you think about doing Aurami of the Dead Tide? Love the new encore mechanic.
Hi Mitch! Not sure if you'll see this but I got an interesting idea watching this new series and the Professor's new "Is it worth it?" video on the Commander Legends Commander Pre-con decks. Would it be fun/useful to do a series with your take on "reasonable upgrades" to the Pre-cons as long as their pricing stays consistent with Commander Legends and Zendikar (about $20-$25 each) and showing like a "Reasonable Upgrades" or "Break the Bank" on them? I thought this might be a valuable resource for newer players who maybe bought a pre-con and want to make some upgrades as well as veteran players who maybe bought a pre-con to diversify their commander deck library but want it to be a little bit better? Just a thought, but as always love the content!
Really enjoy this new style. I feel like a Commander as a format is becoming increasingly homogenous due to the amount of content that says "this is the optimal way to build your deck". I know you've always steered from that viewpoint, but having a more open format to your deck techs, I think, allows for more innovation and creativity. Really enjoyed seeing your take on Hans btw, big fan!
I love the new style to the episode and if it makes it easier for you to spit out multiple commander brewing videos I'm all for it! And also a shoutout I brewed up a pirate theme'd deck with Dargo, The Shipwrecker and Malcolm, Keen-eyed Navigator as the commander's and basically made Dargo voltron with the synergy of treasure tokens Malcolm can make Dargo an undead pirate that one shots opponents! It's janky and fun and your video's kinda inspired to brew my very own!
goblin recruiter is also nice, then you can search for all your goblin creatures and put them on top of your library. I'm not saying you run a massive amount of goblns, but you know, some important ones, Brash taunter, Kiki-jiki mirror breaker and some other great ones. with kiki-jiki there are plenty of creatures in green and red that go infinite for the win.
Wait so Magebane Armor prevents nonconbat damage. How is it gonna prevent damage done to Hans if the cards that are entering the battlefield through his effect are attacking right away and engaging into combat???
Love the new style. As an idea, would it be good to have a roundup at the end of approx numbers of each type of card? Obviously creature and land numbers, but perhaps if you need and how much removal, wipes, bounce, ramp etc. So we can take some or all of the advised cards and look to see how we can fill in around them Ourselves? Could have some fun categories for the more deck themed effects.
As soon as I saw the flavor of this deck I knew I wanted to build it. The idea of hans walking through the woods and constantly being attacked by a variety of creatures is hilarious to me 😂
You should brew Araumi, it can be a very good budget commander, there are alot of good creatures you can exploit like corridor monitor, which means you can activate Araumi more than once in a turn, usually about 3-4 times. If you are low on mana you can use Priest of Gix as one of the extra encore targets to generate 9 mana for 3 mana. This also works with cloud of Faeries and Peregrine Drake. there are a lot of good exploits with being able to get any creature to gain the encore ability, especially in commander.
I think I've stumbled on a budget build idea which could be fun to attempt... Obeka, Brute Chronologist slivers, with Dregscape Sliver as the golden pig. Feel free to explore this idea, I think it has potential
Hey, I’ve got a bit of a suggestion for a deck that would work really well on a budget. I recently built a Mayael, the Anima deck under 100$, but excluding a few cards that I already owned it could easily be paired down to $50. I think it would be a really cool deck tech and work well on a budget.
Trust me when I say this, if you wanna do a deck kinda like this one, Vaevictis Asmadi the Dire is absolutely the way to go. I have a deck like that and it’s so strong. Just don’t use any non permanent cards(except maybe primal surge if you wanna just win)
EDH Rec lists Etali, Primal Storm as a high synergy card with Hans. But reading it I don't think you get Etali's attack trigger if it's put into play with Hans' ability?
I would consider either putting Hans into a Neyith deck or vice versa. Hans will ideally fight a lot of things and Neyith really likes that. If Hans doesn't fight then you just get some card draw and have a creature your opponents are likely to block because it's a valuable engine card and it only has 1 power. Good stuff all around
didnt see the combo with anara, thats great for constructed but also in commander legends draft. i thought golden pig was gonna be something like darksteel plate but the wolf is definitely sweet
Hi mitch. nice switch on the theme of the episode, this one is pretty cool. however, since you are brewing and have more freedom, i could see you exploring different strategies or build aproaches, giving insight on diferent ways one could build a deck with this commander, for example with jhoira exploring the possible legendary synergies that could make another good deck instead of artifact storm and things like that. anyway, nice video :D

Ever since Noah came out with his video where he put Hans on literally every slide I've wanted to make a deck that makes all the copies of Hans Erikkson
I was thinking a deck w some Unblockable and flying equipment for Hans. A lot of 3/2s (or 1/3s) with some combat trick gimmicks for after "the fighting". Like zada hedron grinder, dreadhorde archanist, guttersnipe, kiln fiend, dual caster mage, wildfire eternal, tectonic giant, spelleater wolverine & dual casting in red; gruul beastmaster, pathbreaker ibex, syr Farren in green; collision//colossus, rubblebelt rioters, all 3 Radha, tuya bearclaw in gruul, and a whole lot of combat tricks/pumps to kill, or via commander damage or with your attacking party. Repeatable effects preferably (rebound, retrace, flashback - if they exist?). Extra combats are a welcome upgrade :) Not the BEST deck. But original and fun :) what you guys think?
[fyi: you can choose the order of the "when atacks" effects, and respond adequately after the fight, in order to take max advantage of the pump spells and pump creatures] For draw: all that yummy green draw effects based on a creature power :)
I like this style of "deck tech" where it's less a full deck list and more a list of options that could be taken. Honestly I wouldn't even mind if it was longer and just a bunch of random ideas.
Can you please do a budget tech for Thrun, the Last Troll? I love the card and want an affordable deck but everything online I can find is quite expensive.
