  • Soundtheory Gullfoss is an intelligent EQ VST plugin that promises to easily increase mix clarity. In this review, I test Gullfoss on a full mix, and test it vs oeksound soothe 2 for dealing with a resonant guitar. Is it an instant fix for you mix? Is it like soothe2 or DSEQ? Is it the best mastering plugin? Watch to find out.

      Hello, I am a blind, audio engineer, and I wish I knew the exact parameters you placed on each thing is there any chance that you can send me the presets so I can apply and tweak it as I go or can you just tell me what your place for recover and so forth it would really help me. Thank you so much. And by the way, amazing video.

    Always a pleasure to see what brilliant minds have come up with! Part of the process I've developed uses a variant of this technique - however, the primary steering uses a form of parametric EQ steered by relative amplitudes of nearby & harmonically related content. Very heavy computationally. Looks like Gullfoss may be easier on the CPU load than what my workstations need to put up with - although there isn't as much going on with Gullfoss, either. What it does it appears to do well. Nice tool.

    I like how natural Gullfoss sounds compared to soothe. I have soothe and I found I never or rarely use it because I have to really fiddle with it to get it to work how I want. And it can make things sound like smooth SpongeBob. Gullfoss so far seems to give me (what I expected soothe to do) very easily.

    • @palebluedotstudios
      @palebluedotstudios  Рік тому +3

      That's great to hear! I find soothe2 can be a bit more flexible with very problematic tracks, but artifacts can appear quickly. Gullfloss is quite transparent, so it's great choice for fixing issues, and you can use the filters to narrow in on a band. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

    • @palebluedotstudios
      @palebluedotstudios  8 місяців тому

      I think if you're looking at mainly correcting instruments, I'd go with soothe2 for this. Gullfoss is mainly targeted at mastering, and soothe2 gives you more control over the processing. Cheaper alternatives to look at: Wavesfactory Equalizer and Techivation M-Clarity. Very good plugins that sound great, right out of the box. thanks for much for watching! Cheers!

    Thank you for the comparison! Do you think for most use cases, gullfoss will do the trick for fixing upper mid harshness on guitars and vocals just as well (or comparable) to soothe?

    • @palebluedotstudios
      @palebluedotstudios  2 роки тому +2

      You’re very welcome! I think Gullfoss is ideal for fixing harshness, whereas soothe2 would be more for resonant frequencies, but there is a lot of overlap in features here. Try the demos if you can, but Gullfoss is a great choice for overall harshness!

    • @lyteside

      @@palebluedotstudios thank you so much - that clarification helps a ton. I am already eyeballs deep in using surgical EQ to kill resonances (and have the dynamic option with Pro Q 3), so gullfoss might actually be the better time saver for me right now. Obviously when I'm ready to shorten my workflow on surgical EQ, I can make the leap to soothe :D

    So worried, what should I put first in my mix bus? Will putting one in front of the other mess things up? Or should soothe 2 always go first before gullfoss??
    And is spiff anything like gulfoss? Where should I throw in spiff if I do use gulfoss and soothe 😂 new to mixing but absolutely love it.

    • @palebluedotstudios
      @palebluedotstudios  2 роки тому +1

      So glad you're loving mixing! If you're new to mixing, I would recommend using soothe 2 lightly, and only when you hear bad frequencies. If you're using it with Gullfoss, I'd use Gullfoss after soothe 2 for final EQ balancing (but generally speaking, it's a bad sign if you need to use both).
      Spiff is a different beast: it's main job is working with transients, i.e. you can make your drums punchier. I would not bother with Spiff while you're learning. You've probably got a decent transient designer in your DAW. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers!
