Thank you, I usually used the stainless boating clips that open to the front using a long clip and found that it was hard to open consistantly with gloves, causing me to stop using clips. I will now try these styles. Your instruction on this simple but important topic was very well done and informative.
This was a great video and super helpful thank you! I’m setting up my first backplate and tech set up now. Wish I found this channel years ago. Great work guys very impressive skills 👌
I clip my flashlight the same way and the amount of divers who have said you have the clip the wrong way … yes I know thank you … great video’s in simple easy of explaining 🇬🇧🏴
have marked all of my 'Boltsnap' and 'D' rings and have changed the way I attache all of my stuff all be it I have reduced the amount of clutter, thank you for taking the time to share.
Thanks for the good video! I am currently switching from a "wing jacket" to a proper backplate, i got the backplate (steel 3mm) used from eBay and will attach the nylon strap, d-rings and so on myself.. So your video is a good explanation why you need which d-ring and so on ;)
Could you do a video about equipment for cold water? Undergarments, heating wests etc? And a video about different dry suits: neoprene, rubber or trilaminate? I have learned alot from your videos. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Hi Achim I just watched your video on how you attach your gear to your harnes I noticed you threw the locking climbing carbiinder in the trash pointing out it corrodes and has no use on dive gear True in Salt water I am mainly in fresh water When I am cutting netting out of a fishing vessel propeller and there is a current in the lake I rig a line from the boat and clip a carabiner on the crotch strap d ring so I don't drift further back than the propeller I also have a webing strap attached to my back plate in the middle behind my head about 18 inches long with a loop inthe end It comes over my left shoulder thru a separate loop beside my inflation hose All the fish boats have cranes on them After I get done clearing the propeller and I am on the surface I take the strap out from under the shock cord hook the carabiner to the strap and the hiab crane make sure it is clear and they lift me straight out of the water and on to the deck Is there any way I could send you a picture? Have a great day! I r
Hy Achim! I saw that your long hose tucked underneath your harnes probably because in this case you don’t have the torch battery attached. Do you think in this case this solution is better or a “fake torch battery” like apeks has the hose retainer. I’m talking about recreational diving obviously when the torch with battery not necessary. Thank you for your answer
Im currently building a backplate / long hose rig.Your post is awesome! I see you have two A700 regs, its it imperative with the long hose configuration that both regs be the same reg?
Totally different direction from me, My old rig was not unlike your set up... I switched to a vest BC 15-20 yrs ago and with it a whole host of better solutions with it. In my world all those clips are nothing more than fishline snags.Lighting, I use two on shoulders (one on each pointed skyward) anchored by plastic clips - safety is a loose zip tie. I have inside arm sleave for a fishline ripper, Spare reg set up is with velcro... everywhere. (very easy to repair) I use carabiners (not locking) for tool bag if needed, net if needed, Aqua sun if needed, netbag if needed. I couldn't use those little clips after 10 mins in my local area with out gloves 3/8" or 1/2" always.
Really great, just switched to a backplate setup and still trying to figure out the most optimal way to attach my gear. What did you use to attach the regulator to the bolt snap? Looks like bungee rope or rubber band. Should the hose slide in the loop?
Thanks for sharing. Can you do a video on weight belts? My weight belt is sort of in the way for my line cutter (weist belt knife) but I want it to be ditchable for now. Thanks
A late update here in case anyone cares: With more experience I now do _not_ want my weight belt to be ditchable unless I explicitly attempt to do so. I.e. I put my weight belt on before the harness. That way if the weight buckle opens by accident, the crotch strap will catch it and I can re-fasten it. It is not difficult to ditch the weights if necessary if you have to. I often do it before entering a boat.
I’m really surprised to see the gates of any of the snaps facing out. I am obsessive about the gates facing in because of my history with horses = all snaps around horses (buckets, blankets, leads, etc) face in so that these is less chance of getting clipped accidentally to something unintended. It seems like this would be a good safety measure for divers, too.
Hi, All your videos are great really helpful. What are your thoughts on harnesses with cinch clips to aid donning and doffing? I currently have a custom divers tech harness but looking to chnage as it isn't really suitable. Are there any harnesses you would recommend. Looks like you are using a Scubapro X Tec harness? Kind regards Chris
Hi Chris, as Patrick said - that harness is very basic and as long as it is one piece and without buckles and with the basic Drings it will be fine. I use a Scubapro in the video - right.
could you please let me know, how the bungee comes which you fixed the backup light on your left shoulder. Is it comes with the BCD, or you make it by your own. Thanks.
Hi, theses are rings, cut from inner bycicle tubes. Most rigs come with them today, but if teh manufacturer failes to outfit their gear properly, they are easiliy attached by yourself. best Achim
Like always: love the video. Very usefull. Still: one question; where do you store your reel when not in use? I'm used to clip it to my right hip (regular bcd). But a DIR harnass doesn't have a D-ring at that place.
HI, thanks. It depends. If I have no stages I sometimes use my left hip D-RIng (BELOW the SPG) but it should not hang below your body. The best place is the butt-D-RIng.
HI. The one holding the inflator is 3mm bugeecord that you find in most diving stores or online. The ones holding the backuplights are slices of bycicle inner tubing.
@@CoastalDevelopment hi ! Sorry I'm not an English native speaker; I understood that you used inner bycicle tubing to attached your 2nd and 3rd lights. But how do you fix those bycicle tubing to your BC? Thank you very much!!
First off, from a rec diver...THANK YOU! Your efficiency is amazing. I'm so close to getting my full setup. But what is your backup lights? I like how they tuck nicely away but are easily accessible.
very useful! It's the video I was looking for. But I didn't understand which size do you use for the backup lights and primary lights? always 1/2''? SPG 1' or 3/4''? Lights 1/2'' Double Snap (extra) 3/4''? Is that correct? Would be cool if you can write in the comment a list of sizes/use of them, just to be clear. Thank you!!!
Hi Ian, yes of course. The SPG on the doubles is 56 cm and on the single it is 64c, The reason or this is that on the doubles the hose goes done pretty straight while on the single it is curved, which makes it a bit uncomfortable to check the SPG for a lot of divers. Best Achim
I'm just in the process of doing a tec setup for my single cylinder. Miflex do 55cm and 60cm. I'll probably get the 60cm, but will measure/check again. Will watch your single cylinder setup again. Thanks for your help.
Hi, as a recreational diver I've been told to use an Octopus holder on the right side of my BC in case my buddy is in trouble he can easily have access to my Octopus and its also quite easy to remove it yourself and use it in case of emergency... What would be your opinion on using Bold snaps against Octopus holders to hang our Octopus? do you think it may add a risk factor for my buddy or me while diving? what is the advantage of using bold snap for your setup? I must also ask, I see a lot of these bold snap in warehouse stores... Would you say there's a difference between the ones that you get in stores for scuba gear? Thank you so much these videos, they are very helpful!
Hi Leo. There´s a mixup of concepts. If you dive an octopus you need to make sure it is accesable for your buddy. If you clip it off with a boltsnap that is not given any more. If you dive a long hose as we do and use a necklace for your own backup, you donate what you breath (which is one of the key principals of DIR minded diving. So the snap pn our primary regulator is there to stoire it if it is not in our mouth or in our hands. If you buy snaps buy stainless steel marine grade quality the stuff in the hardware store - even if stainless has a non stainless spring inside and if this will rust, the snap is done . Hope this helps. If I may say that - a BOE class might be super interessting for you as it really gives you all the knowledge behind. the videos are just like windows into someting.
Gruss Achim
LG.
why would you need to clip your primary regulator to your right D ring?? I like how everything is close to your body nicely organized but aren't you going to use your primary reg always... hmmm I see you tech divers often use stage bottles so you need to put your primary reg away where it won't drift away.
Hi. The primary is either in your mounth, your hand or clipped away. As you already mentioned, when I use a stage I want it to be stored instead of dangling somwhere and also when I walk to the water, get out of the water, etc. it is in a fixed position. Especially with the longhose it has te tendency to be dragged trough the dirt behind you - and thats not too god with your breathing source :-)
i see what u mean now, so even recreational divers would benefit from this when going in and out of water the reg falls in random places and on boat dives i noticed it can get crushed. by the tank but if it is on bcd it won't. very nice tip thanks
Judging by the hose attached to your reg, you are doing a lot of confined space entries? That is a poor choice for any but the most experienced divers. Secondly, in a desperate situation an out of air diver rookie is going to try to rip yours out of your mouth.
This is one of the most helpful dive videos I’ve seen. Excellent content. Thank you!
I love this guy! Great videos and all laid out in layman's terms. Keep them coming please.

love how he throws the "crap" boltsnap away :)
lol my GUE instructor did something very similar, when she noticed a faulty bolt snap. She threw it away with disdain, almost hatred.
thanks for your videos Achim! I find them very helpful in the beginning of my dive adventure!
Carabiners definitely are bad for diving. I enjoyed this video.

Why does he always throw his things around 😆
Thanks for the video, excellent !!!!
great stuff
Nice Video!
What is the purpose of the third light („second“ backup light)? What is the procedure?
Hi Achim I just watched your video on how you attach your gear to your harnes
I noticed you threw the locking climbing carbiinder in the trash pointing out it corrodes and has no use on dive gear
True in Salt water
I am mainly in fresh water
When I am cutting netting out of a fishing vessel propeller and there is a current in the lake I rig a line from the boat and clip a carabiner on the crotch strap d ring so I don't drift further back than the propeller
I also have a webing strap attached to my back plate in the middle behind my head about 18 inches long with a loop inthe end
It comes over my left shoulder thru a separate loop beside my inflation hose
All the fish boats have cranes on them
After I get done clearing the propeller and I am on the surface
I take the strap out from under the shock cord hook the carabiner to the strap and the hiab crane make sure it is clear
and they lift me straight out of the water and on to the deck
Is there any way I could send you a picture?
Have a great day!

No because it’s difficult to undo in case there is pressure on it. The possibility of it unclipping itself is higher if it’s faced inward.
Might be a silly question, but what are you using to hold your secondary torch flush against the strap? A rubberband, elastic strap?
Regular bicycle tubing is often used, but you can also by pre-cut tubing which is more expensive but does the same.
Hello! Great video really helpful, I’m just wondering what was that piece of bungee that holds you back up torch tight? I need one for my self
I have the same question. Did you get an answer?
It’s the inner tube of a bicycle
mountain-bike bicycle air tube
Many thanks.
What make & model of backup light are you using ?
Cold Walter river need to use bigger boltsnaps because of thick clove and underclove on and in drysuite.
No, thats a general missunderstanding. the snap is the same size on all of them. It's a matter of practice and technique
