Yes agreed with you everything, I have 18, Bighorn package. For light duty pickup truck this V6 is more then you need. Got very good HP and torque. No need for V8 on this light duty truck chassis. Even with V8 you got same light duty parts on truck like V6. I can see V8 in 2500 heavy duty truck, but V6 is just amazing engine. Plus Variable valve timing VVT works great. On highway speed in 8th gear two cylinders shut off and engine works on 4 cylinders which is good for fuel economy. I'm really pleased with V6!!
The V6 doesn't have cylinder deactivation to run on 4 cylinders. Only the Hemi's have that feature
You don't have a clue.
V6 ram doesn't have cylinder deactivation.
Also, cylinder deactivation doesn't actually help fuel economy.
It's great to see a pleased RAM community! I owned GMC and Toyotas all my life. I recently bought a 2021 Big Horn, North Edition a very solid truck! I now have driven it across the US without any issues. Many people would say, be ready to get stranded on the side of the road 😅
Very Good video. My wife and I towed a 67 Mustang on a UHaul trailer, with a 2017 Big Horn Ram 1500 quad cab 3.6, on a 800 mile drive on Interstate highways. I might add it was during the summer months, so we also had the a/c running. The truck performed very well. We were surprised the V6 had adequate power for towing. Yes, timing and building up speed was the key.
I love my 2020 1500 classic I’m in ID where I can still get 94 octane and I drive to Cali all the time to visit mom and dad and I get 23.1 MPG before moving I got 20.5 MPG on 91 octane. Great video !
Good video! I've had my eyes on one of these with the v6 and 4x4 for a while now.
Good choice!
I have a 2016 ram 1500 bighorn with the 3.6, I have the 3.55 rear end and I have it leveled on 34s, pulls my 7500lb horse trailer very well, a little hesitant during some minor hills but overall very smooth. I averaged 12.7 on 100 mile trip. It has 169000 miles too.
It's been a year now, how many pieces is your ram is in now
@@dkrawk8309 still running strong 218k miles now and still pulling on 35s
@@dkrawk8309 still averaging about 12mpg
@@giobarajas3654 there's gotta be something severely wrong with it, which os highly understand, but I would not expect to hear the truth anyway
Honestly nothing wrong, only replaced the 3 way coolant valve last week and oil cooler 4 months ago, other than that its still running strong
Great video. A tough load but you aren't pedal to the floor the entire time. That's a great way to drive and enjoy your vehicle and not drive it into the ground, just for a few minutes of time saved on route. Gas consumption that you measured was fantastic and many people will save lots of cash by driving with your style. It can mean a huge cost saving when towing over long trips and years of ownership. We have a 2019 v6 1500 classic for work and it's a dream to drive, super quiet and comfortable. I look forward to getting one for towing a 4000 lb travel trailer, which should handle with ease. No reason to go for a midsized truck when a full size with a solid v6 will do the job with zero concern and no compromise.
I have a 2014 ram big horn 4x4 crew cab with the 3.6 engine and 3.55 rear end , 20 inch tires and basically the same as yours I have been looking at travel trailers that I can handle with my truck and this video puts my mind at ease.yours is the first and only one I've seen on the ram v6. I'm looking at tt around 26 ft max and 5500 lbs dry weight. I drove loaded 18 wheelers over the grapevine many times and it is a test for any pickup a load the ram did a good job
Thank you for good feedback.
Great video that destroys the narrative that the V6 doesn't have it's place.
Thank you. Someone on another vid said the 2021 Ram 1500 Bighorn had trouble towing 5000 pounds and I was worried because I just bought one for towing
This was very helpful. Thank you for making this video!
Great video. It is for some of the same reasons you show why I opted for the 2021 Ram 1500 Big Horn with the eTorque V6 (Pentastar) 4x4 with the 3.55 rear. If I ever need more than 7k towing capacity, I'm calling someone.
These engines are popular for adding superchargers to. You can get 400k out of the engine, change the timing chains and guides then go another 400k.
Agree
I’ve always been a ford guy until I drove a 21 ram classic with a pentastar and 8 speed zf. Seriously impressed with the performance.
@@cornelius6304 got my 22 Bighorn V6 in March. Extremely happy with it
2002 3.7 magnum 300k now 5 speed manual and pulled tractors side by sides lumber etc oh and 2wd it's how you drive it maintenance etc ...
That v6 pentastar is power packed
Absolutely and as I am actually driving it right now with the power to spare, solid soundtrack, excellent ride and cabin quality and comfort, at 24mpg, this automobile is a hidden gem. There is just no other truck like this.
@@VITALexplorer yes I had no idea what gem this truck was, I needed a rental truck for a 1500 mile trip moving some things. I ended up getting a 2021 ram classic from enterprise and it exceeded my expectations. That 8 speed zf transmission is perfection, instant smooth shifts, perfect powerband, always in the right gear when you need it. And that pentastar 3.6 never skipped a beat got great mpg, I was able to pull away from a Infiniti g35 with the bead loaded. 😎 I wanted a new ford or Chevy before, my next truck will be a pentastar powered ram.
Hardly power packed with just 305 hp and just 269 lb of torque
Kool edit just got one yesterday and I love it !
very good video. The truck is good looking and performed well. I have a 2014 that is the same set up as this. Good job.
Thanks 👍
I just bought 2023 Dodge Ram classic Express,Night,Hemi packages black diamond exterior
My 3.6 Ram is well used (former police vehicle with 8,000+ idle hours) but with a 7K trailer it still gets better mpg than my 5.4 V8 Navigator unloaded. Unloaded it gets 23 average. Its the ZF8 transmission that makes the difference. Also owned a 3.6 Durango with the Mercedes 5 speed auto and it sucked at towing.
I own a 3.6 Durango with the 5 speed Mercedes and I always thought it was pretty good until I drove one with an 8 speed. The Durango with the 8 speed feels like it has 50 more horsepower than mine and it's the same engine.
Holy smokes thats a lot of idle time. I wonder if they rebuilt the motor? How much miles/km on it now?
@@simonduzz around 135,000 miles. Runs great.
Great video!
Best wheels from a 4th gen RAM. I want those for my 2012 model (also 20s but a wider spoke)
Was leaning towards this set up for my next truck.
Best truck and one of the best vehicles I have owned.
You're ratings that you're spouting are from the wrong truck. That's a crew cab, not a quad cab. And if it's a 4x4 like you say, then your max tow rating is 7,400lbs. If that's a 2wd, then your max tow rating is only 100lbs more. Might want to check into that, but either way you're completely maxed out. Also, a couple very important things you never mentioned: 1) transmission temp. That is much more important to keep an eye on than engine temp when towing. Heat will kill a transmission much sooner than an engine. 2) The tongue weight once that trailer was loaded. I'm betting that the max tongue weight is 500lbs for your hitch is, and with the way your truck was squatting, I'd say you were well over that.
Not sure if I got a lemon- I have a 2024 Bighorn 3.6L V6 4x4 and have to BABY it to get 20 MPG. Normal driving conditions I get 17-18, so I can't imagine towing anything with it.
I savagely beat the fuck out of my 2014 3.6. Hauling drywall, chasing pussy and running up and down Donner summit. It's got 260k . No problems. Never had a tune up and original Trans. It got the tick tick valve noise now. Most motors would have granaded by now
……you sir, just made my night 😂
Chasing pussy puts a lot of strain on the frame
Lmao 🤣
I love my v6 2018 got it new I’m at 66k
Got my new set off good years
Did new brakes last week
Overall great truck
But my paint on my hood is bubbling up don’t know what that’s about but I do wash her weekly And gets waxed bi weekly
Also it’s a California truck
Thank you for sharing. The paint situation you described is perplexing. I will research on this during my review of the truck. Have you taking it to the dealer, would be interested in what they have to say. Also, I would think this should be covered by the warranty.
My hood has been doing it too. It's aluminum corrosion under the paint.
Typical of modern Chrysler paint/metal quality. Its a love hate relationship with these vehicles
It’s just corrosion under the paint. Shoot some Fluidfilm from the inside venting holes and you’re done
@@VITALexplorer update on my truck I recently did the oil filter housing it started to leak down the back I thought it was the tranny but no .it’s a pretty big job removing upper and lower intake manifolds and one of the injector rails I did it myself to save the money my uncle is a mechanic so he supervise lol my truck is at 78 miles and Also replaced radiator cap it started to seep coolant was having sweet smell coming after long drives over all I guess it’s an alright truck tbh
The 3.92 gears are worth changing to. And getting new wheels for 285/70-17 tires in load range C or D. I have a 3.0L engine and 3.92 gears. I have 275/60-20 tires. And prefercthe ride with the 17" rim.
My v8 gets 25 unloaded on highway and 17 around town.
great video . not sure if i should buy one with v-6 3.6, v8 or the future twin turbo v-6 . Regardless love you're video
V8 Hemi has lifter/camshaft failure problems. Ecodiesel V6 has issues with eating its own bearings. The I6 twin turbo is overly complex, leaving the 3.6 V6 as the only long term reliable engine.
About like the 3.7 in the F150's. It will do it no problem, but it's going to be noisy.
If taken care of, those pentastars last forever. I've seen many with over 300k miles.
I hope your right. I have a 2018 ram 1500 v6 4×4 flex fuel.
Smart towing, that's fast enough.
Agree
52 mph towing up a hill? I don’t think so
@@paulhunter9613I see truckers in big semis doing that all the time
I have a 2015 single cab slt with the 5.7 and tow haul mode. And for some reason, there is no hitch. thus , having the electrical mounts
Excellent video, very informative. Wondering if airbags would be necessary if towing at 5000-6000lb travel trailer regularly.
Thank you. Specified by you trailer should not be a problem, you would need to check on the pin weight. I prefer SuperSprings over the air bags, you install it once and no maintenance ever.
What is the rear axle ratio of your truck?
Mine struggled to pull a 3200 lb camper. I watch these UA-cam videos where it can tow 7000 so I went and bought a small camper and wish I wouldn't have listened to these videos. I would guess mine would probably have been good for Towing 2,000 lb
Hes towing it in the video?? Is the video lying somehow?
This is bad advise ,V8 is night and day difference when towing. Notice the RPMs while going up the grapevine. Towing with the V6 will wear the engine and transmission out much faster. Travel trailers need the V8 with low gear, if you're running a business get the V8.
If I'm shopping for a used truck I avoid a V6 if I know it's been used to pull a travel trailer..
It's about the skills, not the size.
Would you drive 2,000 miles from California to Idaho with a 20ft enclosed trailer full of stuff from a house
I wish they would have made the 4.7L the entry-level powertrain on the newer generation all truck’s should be V8’s
It’s not 1970 anymore buddy, and the 4.7 is out dated. V6s nowadays make more power and similar torque.
Had the v6 got he I now
Whats the gear ratio?
Where do you find which rear-end the truck has???
So no brake controller or was the trailer equipment with surge brakes
What would be some common temp numbers for tran oil and coolant??
На отлично👍
I have a 2019 ram 5.7 . you can't convince me that 3.6 underpowered motor is a good choice. my 5.7 does all the work with ease and doesn't struggle like that 6 banger.
The fuel mileage difference isn’t as big as people claim. I’d choose the 5.7 HEMI over this engine even though I’m sure it’s fine. Resale it’s always easier to sell a V8 truck compared to a V6. More capability = more money.
Do you have the Tow/Haul button on your dash, and did/do you use it?
He did, the dash is showing Tow/Haul mode active when he is towing.
That's a 2021?!
Good vid but using BMW engineer is a negative to me. BMW, Mercedes and Italian sports cars are crap. In the real world they don't live up to the prestige they get.
I actually have the 2022 version of this truck.
Agreed with you for the most part, but this transmission is one of the exceptions, just like the Mercedes 157 compressor motor, or most of the Porsche lineup.
It should tow it's rated 300 hp
What was the differential gearing? I have a 3.21.
Mine is 3.55
@@VITALexplorer crazy, mine is a 2019 new build and it's gears are 3.21 but it tows 7000.
@@anaman6960 Sorry that is not correct. You need to check that! The 3:21 is not rate to tow that amount. You need the 3:55 gears or 3:92.
@@forthefunofit5487 no you're wrong. Check the towing charts for ram. It's all confirmed. Different year models have lower capacities. 3.55 for my year model is about 8000
@@forthefunofit5487 also the V6 does not go up to 3.92. only 3.55.
Why is the torque lower then the horsepower
Torque isn't typically a strong suit of non-turbocharged V6 engines. After all, V6s like the Pentastar were initially (and mainly) designed for duty in cars and minivans. Still, as this and other videos show (not to mention lots of viewer comments), a modern V6 can be a very capable and efficient engine...even in a pickup truck. I own a Dodge Caravan with the Pentastar V6, and it has been a trouble-free, "no complaints" experience. Even so, being partial to Chrysler vehicles, I am pleased and impressed at the number of positive comments from owners of V6 Rams.! If I buy one, I will definitely choose the V6, though I may opt for the 3.55 gear ratio (instead of the standard 3.21). I'm still pondering that decision.
If your going to haul like that put a trans cooler on the truck
It already has one from factory. Mine does anyway.
unlike Toyota, Chevrolet and Ford ,Ram still has one from the factory even on the new Gen5 body style which I have on my 2020 truck with the Pentastar V6 motor
Do you think this truck with 3.6 is capable of pulling 8,000 lbs?
With reasonable expectations and smart towing, yes.
Rule number 1
DON'T EVER BUY V6 GAS TO TOW WITH
