Thanks, Paul. This video definitely makes the use of the scales a lot clearer! Initially I am worried about the D-minor scale having four consecutive notes (E,F, F#, G) with half-step intervals. All because the "usual" scales spread out those half-steps. I guess it's a question of my ear (in addition to my fingers) getting used to it.

Thanks Paul! Is that t easier to think of just using the dominant bebop scale over the minors as well? Just to make life a little easier?

Thanks Paul! Is it easier (and reasonable) to think of just using the dominant bebop scale over the minors as well? Just to make life a little simpler on the fly?

@@rickrocketts183 There are no rules on how to use it or think about it. It makes it easier for you then do it. Avoid making the mistake many people make which is getting bogged down in the math of it. Make music. And if you think about it a certain way and it works for you then that's the way to go. 😁

@@Jazzmentlgreat answer! I’m still learning the rules but slowly getting an intuition for how each note will sound in advance. And that’s when I feel like I’m actually making music.

Hi Paul - Looking at the Dm7 Bebop scale - it's definately not the Dm 6thDim scale, nor is it the C 6thdim scale (the key of the moment). I was under the impression (perhaps mistaken) that a 6th dim scale was the same thing as the bebop scale. Am I missing something? If I were playing a song where the key of the moment were C and the chord of the moment was a Dm7, I'de probably use the C 6dim scale with the G#. But trying the F# instead sounds ok. Seems like either one could work. Does this make sense to you? Thanks in advance for your insight.

      The only time the
6th Diminished is the same as the bebop scale is for a major chord or a tonic minor chord because both of them have the flat 6 as the passing tone,,but in the case of a dominant (not altered)chord and a minor 7 chord, the bebop scale has no relation to the Barry Harris 6 Diminished scale.
The bebop scale for a minor 7 chord is Dorian with the major 3rd as the passing tone and the bebop scale for the dominant ( not altered) chord is mixolydian with the major 7 as the passing tone. So if you have a 2 5 like
C-7 F7, it's the same scale that goes through both.
