Three things that I have to react to 1) "0-60" refers in most UT videos to miles, saying "3.4s" is a disgusting manipulation. 2) this is a Pro S version which means 77kWh battery. no comment on how many passengers this car can host ? I have just looked at the web page - nope, "technische daten" give no clue. But maybe they have redesigned the car to host five in the meantime ... 3) "I am sure it will electrify the masses". At 35kE, are you sure? And that is the starting price, you have to pay for any detail it lacks. I like the style, this wheel base (you might have mentioned the turning radius), but I think Europe has been waiting for Dacia Spring to electrify the masses, it is comming very soon ... PS. not only head-up display, the whole software is just a crap now, parts of the car not talking to each other. Everyone knows it, don't be "old fashioned" and accept that you can't hide anything in the world now.

    • @MegaSoarer

Not every driver needs car capability to "launch" from 0 to 100km/k in under 5sec, with less experienced drivers it is even better to have more sluggish reaction of acceleration pedal, then why try to hide slower acceleration in intended confusion between 0-60 in miles and 0-60 in kilometres, which is never used BTW, only 0-100 km/h as far as I have seen in my life.
I'm trying to digest - "if you want to be successful with e-mobility just like VW does" (starts 1:53). A bit of wishful thinking from VW side I guess, this gives me impression the review is more on the praise side, than neutrally objective.
I was having higher expectations from ID.3, it is nice looking car, size is just right for European countries, but overall value proposition is a bit disappointing. Probably my expectations were too high.

VW are dreaming. Comparing the ID3 to the beetle. The beetle was a reasonably priced car for the masses not a €40k-€50k car for the few. Currently, the cheapest VW Golf in Germany (mark 7) goes for €17,325 in the most basic Trendline trim level with an 85 hp 1.2-liter TSI turbo engine. ID3 is nothing more than an image statement for purchasers not a game changer. You can buy 500km EVs in China for €10 to €15k.

The first 1st Plus with 62 kWh battery is going to cost 43.730 €, which is a lot.
If you give your actual car to buy, you will have a 5.500 € discount from the government.
Also, some rebates at VW, which I am not sure they are going to do it during the first year.

The dealer pointed out that the

Saying that "it can do 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds" is a bit misleading, because you are actually referring to kilometers per hour.
"0 to 60" always refers to miles per hour, so that's rouchtly 100kph. The id.3 seem to do 0-100kmh (0-60mph) in over 7 seconds.

I am disappointed you spread fake news about testing the Pro S in this video.
      1) Pro S has no glass roof and furthermore you have the 1st badges at the side and the steering wheel
      2) At 2:20 you have 265 km indicated range while your battery is still maybe 80 % full which does not fit to a 549 wltp range with the Pro S
      3) At 5:02 we see 448 V at 94% fill, the Pro S does not have such a high voltage due to a different battery organization.

Hey gzcwnk, it's a really interesting debate you touch on there. If you take inflation into account, the basic ID.3 probably doesn't cost more than the basic Golf 1 did for consumers in 1976. It's starting price was 13,850 DM - about €34,000 in real terms. Interestingly, that's also about the average amount of money people spent on a new car in 2019... So the question remains - what IS a peoples' car (apart from a direct translation of "Volkswagen")?

So imaging developing a new platform that is not going to sell as good as a Golf (which platform is used in a lot of other models (A3, Leon, Octavia)). Probably at this launch price VW is going to be losing money for a couple of years until they reach a nice amount of sales per year.

The software issues seem to be a sticking point for some, but the average car owner wouldn't even know about these, and it is unlikely to hold back the sales once it is released. As correctly pointed out by the reviewer, people want to get in to an EV and it not feel so completely different from their ICE. VW would be wise to abandon the 'sports car' monicker for the ID3, especially since electric motors by definition have remarkable instant torque. The early concept ID3's had significant LED lighting effects, including in the patterned indents of the vehicle skins. There is no doubt a good reason why production vehicles don't include that feature but VW might be wise to cede the dubious performance specs to competitors and focus on the LED aesthetics. American car manufacturers concentrated exclusively on drag race capabilities in the 60's-80's only to lose out eventually to the superior handling, comfort, and luxury of European and then Asian competitors.

From my own experience of another VW BEV, the E-Up, it is very poorly supported, making functions like precooling while on charge problematic. I can see that the spec. is good for the 1st Edition but VW is only making 25,000 of those and they’re already sold out. After the first ones, the smallest battery pack variant are ok but for the price, it’s not going to temp many away from petrol. The mid and largest packs are over priced, compared to competitors. Though VW fans will always buy VW.
If they can ever sort their software and actually deliver to customers; not just a few press cars for auto journos. Then people will buy the ID.3, just because it is a VW. However, the price per variant in base spec., is overpriced compared to ICE cars with a higher spec. Start increasing the specs. to being comparable to same size ICE cars and the price is simply unrealistic.
