    I flew these in the us army and flaps are a must to prevent stall at landing. we had a lot of weight on ours though. without the weight of an engine behind the fuse you will need to add some if electric that's why you had full trim up. all my career I wanted to see one do a loop or barrel roll!

    Glad your "mush" did not turn into a tip stall, great recovery and landing.

      That was not a recovery, it was pure luck that it did stall in a more nasty way.

    Thanks for showing us what she can do. Hope you'll continue updating the rest of us with developments, as well as with an in depth look at the issues you had to overcome to reach this point. I saw what looked like two large batteries up front, but it appears that was to much, is that correct? Finally, I would hope that Hobby King compensates you for doing so much work on their behalf, in terms of helping them market this model, but doubt they will.

      2 Batteries in Parallel mainly for the cg. 1 5000 4S in the nose was not enough to get the cg correct.

    Nice recovery before the dead stick landing!!! I think that the RQ-7 needs more vertical stabilizer surface.

    Good flight. Although you had a problem before takeoff. As soon as you pushed full throttle, your ESC lost sync with the motor. So your timing will have to be lowered. You should probably cut in a NACA duct to pipe cool air to the motor so you don't burn up a motor again.

    Superb recovery! I don't know about you, but I was clenched for a few seconds :-)

    Very interesting vid fellas! : -D thanks for sharing, MY THEORY IS... LOL! at 13:57 you can hear a screeching sound, when I heard that straight away I thought ESC! dry solder joint, I've had MANY Hobbyking ESC's go on me with intermittent noises being produced by the motor, all of which results in the motor burning out! I believe the voltage to the Rx drops too low for the RX to work properly while the motor is heating up, my theory is the esc intermittently produces gaps? in the 3 phase pulsed DC? output, resulting in the motor overheating which causes magnets to melt loose and cook motors! , I no longer buy Hobbyking esc's, I have more than 30 flying models and a few still have HK esc's in them, mainly the Blue series, have survived (dark blue not like yours) I suggest you get rid of that HK esc as soon as you can! You were LUCKY....Good save....this time

  • @chinookmech

    i thought that that motor was too small. You guys can probably use a motor with low KV so you can use a bigger prop. There isn't much airflow at the firewall for that prop to bite into. I'm glad that you got it back in one piece.

    • @cyberspooky
      @cyberspooky 8 років тому

      I think you're right Kiowa , when you look at the size of the dead air pocket behind that fat fuse , have to get the prop biting clean air 😎

    • @prep0wer
      @prep0wer 8 років тому

      This plane needs an air scoop and seperate power for the reciever and servo's; I think it's the ESC as well.

  • @chinookmech
    @chinookmech 7 років тому

    Are you guys going to get this back in the air? Im on the fence about ordering the kit. I hope you will do another video about it.

    Hi,
    What motor and prop are you using?
    One more question, what is the all up weight of the plane (with or without batteries)?
    I'm considering buying it for long range FPV and I want to learn about the plane efficiency.
    Thanks

  • @jaredbachman1662

    Curious on if you folks had an idea on the endurance factor on this airplane? I am considering building one with a DLE20 engine on it for 3+ hours duration. How did it hold up with your batteries flight-time wise?
    Thank you so much for doing all of the build videos; happy to say I watched all of them and you have earned a new subscriber!! Thanks!!

    • @Rcmodelgeeks
      @Rcmodelgeeks  8 років тому +1

      Thanks for the comment and welcome! Well that flight took about 2000mah out of the battery. so roughly 35-40 minutes on 10000mah.

  • @sputniksam
    @sputniksam 8 років тому

    An incredible save, Rob!! 😱😱😱
    As previously mentioned maybe a lower KV motor and larger prop to compensate for the lack of exposed prop radius caused by the fuselage?
    Regards.
    Nidge.

    • @Rcmodelgeeks

      already down to 750kv. Don't think this was an overheat issue ;o) see latest video.

      +RC Model Geeks Ahh... My apologies I didn't realise the motor was a sub 1000Kv. I've just seen your follow-up video and I'm astonished. The NTM series of motors are touted by HK to be their premium brand. With such a winding it's surprising it lasted as long as it did. However it still doesn't take away the skill you exhibited in bringing the RQ-7 safely back to Earth.
      Regards.
      Nidge
