- I built this UAS for a work project. We plan to do some STEM work with some local kids that designed some CubeSats that need to be carried to a specific altitude to collect data. Should be fun….

Joe, working on building 2 of these for a UAV program. The pix shock mount with the angled gromet mounts, where did you get that? Everything seems to be waterjet cut flat stock that I can find.

I have on order 2 of these in ARF from Legend for UAS work at a university later this year. Can you tell me the engine you used and prop? It looks like the DW version has more width available for payload in front of the wing box area than the modern kit. Also, What kind of distance do you have from the prop shaft to the ground? The recommendation is 20 to 30cc which is 15 to 18" props. I sense your engine is 20cc or less from what little I can see of it. Appreciate your video. Let's me do a little prep before the project arrives.
I started with the 9cc but way too small. I swapped for a 15cc but haven’t flown yet. The 20cc on the DW will be way too big and will rip the DW apart. The Legend version looks beefy so might be fine
@@JoesRCCorner Thank you. I studied the photo and found the 9cc engine at VVRC. Looked like it was most likely the 9cc. That seemed shockingly small because the modern recommendation of version II is 20 to 30cc. But, I understand your choice, it does appear to fly well with light power in all available videos. I am concerned about having some payload capacity which depends on having enough weight in the engine in order to "need" enough payload to balance. I agree, it looks like a useful aircraft for UAS work. I wish it were a tad bigger. I'd really like to use the 41cc Saito. Worried that might be too large. Needs an 18" prop and because it cannot be reversed, it would have to be a pusher. Our larger aircraft (Osprey made in Florida) is some configuration, we use a DA 100, reverse pickup, standard tractor propeller. Flown as high as 87 pounds. Will carry about 30 in payload. Love to have a a smaller bird that could do 10lbs. We'll see, I might be asking for too much here.
@@CraftedChannel the 41 might be too big for sure. The weight will also eat into you max payloads too. I fly Aerostar UAS here in NM, MTOW of ~600lbs with a payload capacity of 100lbs and loiter time of 16hr and ceiling of 18k. We use them as trucks for experimental payloads. Also have Tigershark UAS too, ~300-400lb MTOW. Good luck with your project would be neat to see how it goes.
All@@JoesRCCorner Nice. we are 100lbs or less here. A heavy payload is 30 pounds. At least, that is all we've needed so far. I agree the 41 is likely not going to make it. Just keep in mind what I am thinking about here. It does little good to put a super light hobby system on a twin boom pusher, stick 5 or 10 pounds of payload in it then add lead to the tail. Our issue now is replacing a marginal X8 Skywalker with something a little more able to manage an external payload which has yaw stability attenuation characteristics. We need something longer. And Yes, I have discovered the yaw stability is marginal on these. Have that solved. Not much professional down in the under 15lb payload class. Have to make do with COTS. I also have a side interest in pushing the edges out a little bit and employing 4 strokes to extend collect times. too bad there is no 30cc twin 4 stroke gas out there for this airframe. The legend kit calls for up to a 30cc (2.5lbs). Likely that is what I'll end up doing. The only thing that sucks bout the Saito 41 is the bushed conrod leading to needing a lot of oil in the mix. Nearly everybody is running 2 strokes as you are aware. There are more and more larger 4 stroke gas engines which have some application as of yet unrealized.

Is it anyway that you can send a parts full parts list. I am wanting to build one for my final engining class project this summer. There's no one at the University that uses fuel for theirs., thx
This aircraft flys well on an electric system. Search UA-cam for everything "RQ-7 UAS UAV MODEL" Legend Hobby is importing version II as an ARF. Not expected until March.
Is this the new version of the DW kit or an old one?
It might be the old one. I bought it probably 3-4 yrs ago. Has the kit gotten better? The wood in this one sucked….
I guess that is the old one. I think it was discontinued. They are getting ready to re-launch a version 2.

@@JoesRCCorner I've got the new kit now. It's a complete re-design, much better I think. The wood is absolutely beautiful. I'll have a video going up soon.
