  • Vermont Castings Encore. Video walks you through how to get the fire going again after it’s burned down and left with a bed of ashes.
    This is how I’ve learned how to start a fire efficiently with as little effort as possible.
    Please follow all manufacturers recommendation. Burn at your own risk.

    There is a certain pleasure one derives from starting a wood fire, tuning the flame, and sitting on the couch to watch through the glass door. At 94, I still start the fire and feed the wood when the stove needs it. I can't go to the wood shed for a wagon full but I'm still the keeper of the flame. It, along with the internet, makes winter tolerable. Today's technology of catalytic and second burning chamber is marvelous. Have a great Christmas.

      Thanks. Wow. 94. I’ve often told people living with a stove as your heat source doesn’t get old. It keeps you young.

      HimEdward. I liked your post and feel very much the same. I just got a wood stove last week the same as in this video. I do the same as you. Keeper of the fire, sit in a comfy chair with my iPad, or Bible and keep an eye on the flame. Stay warm sir .

    Hi Stephen, I just got the Vermont Castings Defiant, red enamel last week . I love this stove. I live in the Pacific Northwest and was minus 8 degrees for several day before Christmas. My stove got our house temperature to 75mdegrees. I had to open the door for a little bit as we were too warm. I use your technique as well. Stay warm sir and thank you for your video.

    On the second burn of my Vermont Castings, I found this trick b/c I did not fully latch the ash pan door.

    do you leave your kettle on the side of the stove there or move it on top during the burns?

      I’ll do a pot on top if it gets real dry. But it’s not too dry in our cabin. Not like out west.

    We have the same stove and LOVE it. But do other people have small fragments of ash and cat hairs etc get baked into the enamel while it’s hot?

      Haven’t had that issue. I do clean it after I load it with my fire brush to keep it from staining.

      @@stephendaniel168 interesting. We’ve only burned it about 20 times, so perhaps the issue will solve itself after a while. If it wasn’t so darn beautifully white, it wouldn’t be such an obvious issue.

    Hi, I just bought the dauntless vc stove. I have been having issues with the glass turning black with seasoned wood. No airwash on this stove. Is your stove a downdraft style stove as well?

    • @stephendaniel168
      @stephendaniel168  Рік тому

      It’s a downdraft. I’m burning seasoned wood but also get some black on the door. It’s when the pieces are thicker usually. And when I’m trying to get it back up to the correct temp. I would say try splitting smaller. The idea is to get the stove hot in that sweet spot where you have 2 - 4 inches of hot embers. Then close the damper and continue to keep the same thickness of embers by using appropriate sized wood.

      @Anthony Salvate- I also bought a dauntless recently and suffered this for the first few burns. Are your stove-top temps & flue temps hot enough before closing the damper? I bought a digital thermometer and has helped me immensely get the secondary burn (non-cat for now) going, holding temp in the flue and burning hot in the stove, which keeps the glass clean, even for an overnight burn. Still get some black on the glass, but minimal at the top of the window, but the rest is clean.

      @@andreww.9065 My glass is black in the same spot every time. It makes a half circle from one door to the other. I wish I could add a picture. It starts at where the clip is on one side and goes to the clip on the other.
