You can go to pro mode and adjust shutter time to do a long exposure. You will prob need a ND filter if you do that as the camera has fixed aperture (like almost all smartphone in the market)

Hi Richard thanks for all your tutorials. Just wondering if you could explain how to change the aperture setting when using the raw pro mode. Regards and once again thanks for your videos

Hello Richard! It was soo useful! I tried it with Huawei P10lite, not bad ! Next week I will get my new Mate 10 Pro, I will try your advice on that phone too! Thanks for creating this awesome tutorial!
Just ordered the Mate 10 pro. Had the U11 and currently have the Pixel 2. The camera's on the last 2 were great! Always looking to try something new and experiment. Thanks for the video! Will be going to New York to try the silky water mode on the waterfall in Taughannock Falls in New York in July. height is taller than Niagara Falls.
Hey john, let me know what you think the Mate10 Pro is compare to the U11 and Pixel2. But yes the light painting mode is definitely very cool on the Mate10 Pro (and other huawei phones)
Thanks Richard. You're a man after my own heart! I've just got a Mate 10 Pro, & I'm really keen to try the Light Paint mode. Just one thing - I find that my phone doesn't automatically detect the scenes with the AI chip, as advertised? Do I need to turn that feature on? Cheers. David 😀
hey David, haha enjoy your Mate 10 Pro, I really love it. Re the AI scene detection, it is enabled by default, actually you can't turn it off. But this is only enabled in non-pro and non-special mode. e.g. if you turn on Pro mode, or do light painting then it doesn't work for obvious reasons. If it still doesn't work, maybe take a video screen recording when you are using the camera and let me have a look? (press the up volume button + standby button at same time to trigger video recording)
This is very helpful and a great video. Would be great if you can make more of these kind of videos by adjusting and applying the multitude of camera settings to scenes, especially those ones in Manual Mode. For example, explain the function of each setting and which scenarios to use it on. Thank you for your consideration. Huawei P20 Pro user
If the exposure is more than 1 or 2 seconds, a bird flies across the frame quickly should make virtually no difference to the final output as the duration is too short compare to the total exposure time
Hi Richard! Thanks for sharing this info, I find it helpful, especially about the fact that you can see how the photo looks like without needing to determine which shutter speed you'll need to use. One question for you tho, I'm considering to buy mate 10, but I also want to do astrophotography with it. So I'm hesitating whether to buy a real camera or just flagship, and I have to choose just one! (I'm aware that phone camera's sensor is a lot less than real cameras, but still, I don't like the bulk of real camera. It's less likely for me to carry a camera everywhere, while I would really love to do landscape, seascape, and astrophotography wherever I go. And I will only share through Instagram, won't print it). Have you ever tried capturing astrophotography with mate 10? Does this beast capable to do so? I'm sure mate 10 does a good job in daylight, but how does it perform in low light setting?
Hi Elsa, no i have not done any astrophotgraphy. The phone with it's dual f/1.6 lens does a great job in low light. I'm about to publish a review on my blog in a week's time and I did some comparison with the latest iPhoneX and iPhone8, the Mate 10 Pro's camera handle low light much better than the two new iphones. Come check out my blog in a week's time and see the results yourself (not sure if I will shoot a video) www.photobyrichard.com/reviewbyrichard
interesting, i tried doing long exposure using pro mode on the p30 pro and all settings to manual like a dslr and it just doesnt work, always over exposes the shot like your settings are irrelevant, this light painting technique looks better but im finding its blurring other things in the frame too
@@TheRealRichardWong i do a lot of long exposure photography so im familiar with what settings work, the iso was set to 50 shutter i tried 10,20,30 sec couldnt find an aperture value option in pro mode even tried 4 stops under exposed and every shot was over exposed, the same settings on a dslr would have been way to dark, this is night photography by the way
Hi Glenn, one thing you may not aware of is that almost all cameras on smartphone has a fixed aperture and it's a fairly large one around f/1.6-f/1.8. so any exposure longer than a few seconds in normal mode would result in overexposed photos.
@@glenns001 man you need to get a nd1000 attach to the camera for long exposure and for night photography iso needs to be the highest you can get without noise
Hi Richard, I’ve been trying out the Light Painting / Silky Water Effect you have demonstrated, but when I use it outside in normal daylight conditions, it keeps over exposing and I just get a white image - any idea what I might be doing wrong? - I’m using a Huawei P30 Pro camera - thanks for all your excellent videos, they are helpful and inspiring - Peter

Hi, again, Richard. So now my question is how do you suggest photographing fireworks with the Mate 10? Specifically, which is the best long shutter speed mode to use, what iso and shutter speed? From my fiddling around, Night Shot would seem to be the best since you can set the iso, shutter speed, and use the 2x telephoto. Thanks
Barry Sharoff hi Barry I have to say I have not shot much firework with the mate10. But I guess light painting mode I would try light graffiti first and see how it goes. In terms of shutter speed, it's another thing you need to experiment as it really depends on the distance, firework type, wind..etc. But prob start from around 5 second. Good thing with the light painting mode is that you can see the preview of final image and stop when you think there is enough firework trail captured

@@TheRealRichardWong i made a test last night with light painting mode but too much ISO in the images. It would be great to unlock shutter speed in Pro Mode to get more exposure and control ISO and EV.
@@legervoile To be honest, while I also don't mind having a "bulb" mode to allow infinite exposure time, 30seconds is pretty decent already as it is a phone after all. Once the exposure time increased, the camera can overheat and you start having a lot of sensor noise. That's why even on professional full frame cameras, any long exposure over say 30 seconds usually results in another exposure of the same amount of time to allow the camera to do some long exposure noise reduction.
This tutorial video is also applicable to other late model premium Huawei smartphones such as Huawei P9, P10, Mate 9 and probably more
