I love Arlene Francis - I read she was paid $1,000 per show (over $10,000 today). Sadly her diamond heart necklace which she wore on most shows was stolen from her in a robbery before she died. :(
It is sad but jewelry can be replaced. Much more important is that nothing happened to her real heart in the robbery. And everyone loves Arlene, what is not to love? I like her the most of anyone on the show.
Cerf said he started at $300 per show, and that was in the early 50's. By the time this show aired they were no doubt being paid at least $1,000 per show. Cerf said the money got "scandalous" (in a good way).
Not only was she beautiful, but her performance in Beat The Devil shows that she was chronically under-used as a comic actress ... she was hilarious in that movie.

A minor point, but I was a little perturbed at John in his introduction of the first two challengers. He makes a point of spelling the second challenger's last name when his signature was easily readable. The first challenger, however, is the one that could use translation. To me, her "r" looked like a "d". I had to go back and stop the video to see how her name was spelled. The audience in 1967 didn't have that luxury.
Is romeman01 here? When John was saying something about the floods in Italy (where Gina is from), was he referring to the 1966 Flood of the Arno River? Keep in mind that this episode was taped on December 4, 1966.
More than just Florence was affected. Venice and many other parts of the country were heavily hit. According to a UPI report published Nov. 4, "The floods were part of a wave of violent and freakish weather that tore at Italy from Sicily to the Alps. ... Swollen by more than 30 hours of steady rains, rivers all over central and northern Italy burst their banks." Train and auto traffic had to be halted in the affected regions, where people fled to the upper stories of houses for safety. An Associated Press report published Nov. 17 added that "It was a disaster without precedent in modern Italy. Even now, nearly two weeks later, the full extent of the catastrophe is not yet clear." The report added that Prime Minister Aldo Moro "called for a period of national austerity" on account of the economic devastation.
This video shows cars being carried away, artwork and historic books being soaked, mud covering everything. The damage was quite substantial and astonishing. ua-cam.com/video/OVuDIgGsj3E/v-deo.html
Even without being able to understand the narration, that video is overwhelming to watch. The amount of destruction is beyond what words can tell. I remember reading accounts of how much effort it has taken to salvage and restore the books and works of art that the floodwaters, mud, oil and debris had damaged so severely. A number of new techniques were tried and developed to meet the challenge. Perhaps as important, those in Italy, the U.S. and other countries realized that such treasures needed to be cared for and protected more proactively.
At about 9:12 does john say in response to Sue's question about evening gowns, "that it is not impossible that this is not the kind of estate you would find her in." Did he mean, as the last definition under this word that the dictionary has "condition or circumstances with reference to worldly prosperity, estimation, etc.; social status or rank."

Train and auto traffic had to be halted in the affected regions, where people fled to the upper stories of houses for safety. An Associated Press report published Nov. 17 added that "It was a disaster without precedent in modern Italy. Even now, nearly two weeks later, the full extent of the catastrophe is not yet clear." The report added that Prime Minister Aldo Moro "called for a period of national austerity" on account of the economic devastation.
romeman01 Thanks you, as always.
Come on , how did Sue Oakland guess Ms. Gina when she wasn't even SPEAKING.
She snuck a peek notice how her mask was slipping.
@@susanrutherford866 Really
@@susanrutherford866 Well I seen the mask on a slight angle, but I can see if she was * peeking". Thank you for your comment.
most beautiful Italian gina!
How can you work as a detective after you appear on this show? Everyone in this country will recognize you
Not every detective works vice or goes under cover. But even if she did, she'd be disguised, that's for sure.
Joe Postove Circumstances.
Born in New Zealand grew up in Australia Dick Cavett was one of the most intelligent American interviewers I have ever seen. Was he in any other episodes? Thanks
He was definitely before his time..he would have fit in better today with the liberal douche' bags on late night.
