Mother is actually a really sad song, it’s about an overbearing mum Molly coddling her son by not letting him be a boy and do the things he wants to. This is because she lost her husband in the war and is terrified of losing her son. It's all done through love, but has a negative effect on him creating bricks in his wall of isolation. That's why he says at the end, "Mother did it need to be so high". Also, when a song can affect you so greatly it's powerful, there's nothing wrong with exposing yourself to those feelings and especially appreciating your Mom.
I believe, Roger Waters put multiple meanings to this line. It could mean at the same time, "did the wall need to be so high?", "why did I grow up?", and "did it need to be junked up?"
Well, you have to remember that Pink never, ever, ever takes responsibility for himself. He always lays it on Them, They. Never I. So with this song, so with the album. His father, mother, wife, etc... This song he blames his mother for helping build the wall because she was protective. While it might be that his mother actually did overprotect to some degree, none of the things he mentions are necessarily bad things (Mother will find out where you've been, etc). Even the Mother I will put all my fears into you, is something every parent should probably do to some degree. I mean, unless you think a child should touch the fire to learn it is dangerous instead of telling them it is dangerous. Many say the song is about a bad mother. When it is coming from Pink, you should take the lesson with some amount of skepticism.
@stanleymyrick4068 You hit it right on the head. I constantly see commentary about how the mother character was a detriment and a negative aspect of Pink's life, but you're absolutely right that it was done out of love and a fear of losing her son. I also am glad to see someone else point out that Pink never takes responsibility for anything, and that it's always everyone else at fault. Maybe in that sense, Roger truly is Pink.

To get the whole picture of 'The Wall' you first need listen to the whole record, then watch the concert movie from Roger Waters 2011 and 2014 tour and finally the movie they released in the beginning of the 80s. The movie by director Alan Parkerwill provide you with all the context you need to understand the whole concept behind 'The Wall'. The tour had an unbelievable visual concept. During the first half of the concert they built brick by brick the wall until the whole band is hidden behind it. The whole time the wall is used as a monimantal screen to show pictures, movies and best of all unbeleivable animations by Gerald Scarfe. in the second half of the concert the band remains and plays most of the time behind it. From time to time Roger or the 'surrogate' band appeared in front of it until the whole wall will be torn down after the trial 'Pink' (Roger Waters) is holding against himself.
Hi Stacey, I first started my love of Pink Floyd when I was 14, I turn 50 in a couple of months, no other band can compare... "Have a cigar" on the wish you were here album is a favourite of mine. And yes it's "Balls" "momma why does "it" have to be so high" My simple interpretation is "It" being the psychological barrier (The Wall) that a single mother can instill in their kids which can be crippling especially in young men, which is an interesting judging by the present societal Issues single parenthood can create.

Hello Stacey. Here is some quick info on what you have reacted to so far with Pink Floyd. The video versions of Comfortably Numb, On The Turning Away and Wish You Were Here were from the days after David Gilmour took over the rights to Pink Floyd after their original founder, Roger Waters, tried to put the band to rest. There was a lot of friction in the band between him and the other members leading up to the production of The Wall. David Gilmour and Roger Waters fought a lengthy court battle over the musical rights, in which David won. Roger wrote the lyrics to all the songs you have reviewed so far except High Hopes and The Turning Away. The Wall is a masterpiece and it should be listened to in its entirety. Hope this helps.
You're doing great, Stacey! You can't get it all digested in a single setting and piecing through this album before exploring the "concept" is not a bad way to do it. In fact, this is lifetime album that evolves WITH you over your life. I'm 59 and I didn't "get" The Wall at first. I just heard the songs they played on the radio. The more people you talk to who have been influenced by The Wall, the more you will appreciate it.
Stacey, thank you for being an honest and sincere channel - it really is quite refreshing. I’m only a few years younger than David Gilmour and also from England in the UK. I’ve been listening and following Floyd since they began creating music. One track I always enjoy is ‘Coming back to life’ from the Pulse concert in 94. I would love to know what you think too, so if you have time…
Following the trend of the band's three previous studio albums, The Wall is a concept album, dealing with themes of abandonment and personal isolation. It was initially conceived during the In the Flesh tour in 1977, when bassist and lyricist Roger Waters' frustration with his audience became so acute that he imagined himself building a wall between the stage and the audience. The Wall is a rock opera centered on Pink, a fictional character based on Waters. Pink's life experiences begin with the loss of her father during World War II, and continue with ridicule and abuse from her teachers, her overprotective mother, and finally the end of her marriage. All of this contributes to a self-imposed isolation from society, represented by a metaphorical wall. It is necessary to listen to the entire album to internalize and understand the story. Hug- ✌
Pink Floyd's albums all have a theme and the songs within tell the stories of that theme. The Wall is about the wall we all build to protect who we all are, our inner psyche, hidden fears, aspirations, loves, our emotions that are formed from our interactions with people and life, it is a wall, a facade, a barrier, our strength, our being, our universe - yes, that is why Pink Floyd speaks to us all.
@@neillenet291 - mama, like abussive teachers, ;ike death of his father in war, a bad marriage, drugs to numb the pain, etc., are all just bricks in Pink's wall.
You are such a transparent person, it's easy to relive through you our first time hearing these beautiful songs and experiencing the magic of this band. If I may recommend a song for you to listen to, it's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' (studio version), but first, read some context about the song because it has a deep meaning and is dedicated to someone very special to the band. To get the whole experience of this song you really need to do a reaction to the whole album.. it will blow your mind.. and you will fall in love with this band like we all have... Pink Floyd will always be the best band imo
'Mother did it need to be so high' is the balance between the trust he has to his mother to do stuff for his safety, and the doubt that being too much protective will hinder, isolate him from many things...
It makes me smile in my golden years to find this album is still reaching another generation on this level…a complete story that never loses it’s impact…just listen closely…always, listen closely.
This is a song that truly would benefit from being heard in its actual place in the album time line. However it still stacks up as a stand alone . It is dark. Walters and Gilmour trade vocals brilliantly. As the characters Pink and Mother
David even with that said just listen to the lyrics to this one song without context and it is dark and not really what you would your mom to be@@davidmhewett44
I was lucky enough to go Pink Floyd's "The Wall" concert when I was a senior in high school, about 1980. It was released as a double album set, and part of the incredible stage show was that during the first part of show (sides 1 & 2) of the album, roadies were actually building a (cardboard) wall and at the end of side 2, the entire stage was obscured. That wall was then used to show animation for sides 3 & 4, though members of Pink Floyd would appear in front of the wall, (or above the wall, and as I recall, even a door opened in the wall to show David playing guitar, but the show was mostly Roger Waters (lyricist and bass player) on stage, in front of the wall. At the time, it was the most expensive concert tour in history, and it only played 2 cities in the US, LA for 7 shows, and Long Island, NY for 5 shows. There were also huge "marionettes" performing on stage as characters from the music as well, which were really wild. It was one of the most amazing concert experiences I have ever had.
I am so jealous. The Wall is my all time favorite album, and for a long time I've wished I could've seen them perform it live back when it first came out. Unfortunately I wouldn't be born for another 10 years or so.
I will suggest this one again: it’s the music video, Echoes - Live in Pompeii. It was recorded in am ancient theatre with nobody except for them and the production crew, and it was in the daytime. It was just before they recorded their buggiest album, Dark Side of the Moon. You would love it!
Pink Floyd live at Pompeii will change your perception of the band, seeing them young, in their prime, making the most incredible music you will ever hear, will blow your mind!!!
When they first got together, they had a vision of ignoring all the rules of music to experiment with sound, all to just see what worked and what didn't. You can feel it throughout everything they all did from then on.

Referring to ‘the wall’- why did she need to contribute to its conception as much as she did? Through all her actions and influence mentioned in the song, she built upon Pink’s wall by being as patronising, overprotective and dominant as she was. In this line, he’s asking her- did she really need to be this way? Did she really have to be one of the primary factors of his wall?
Pink never took responsibility for what he done and became, always blaming others. When it is coming from Pink, you should take the lesson with some amount of skepticism because it is ALWAYS some other persons doing and fault with Pink.
@@stanleymyrick4068The beauty of music and lyrics is the fact that you can interpet them diffrently. For me, ”mother” isn’t his mother, it’s the reign.

You perceiving this song as a very caring mother-son conversation speaks volumes of your true spirit. You did catch some of the toxic questions and answers and it will make sense when you react to the album or movie.
To me, putting your guard up is the WALL of protection for oneself. You can only protect the little ones for soo long and instill good values in them and hope that it sinks in eventually. Ultimately they wish you to be happy in you life.
This song is about an overbearing mother who won't let her child grow. She lost her husband in WWII. So now she's overly protective and won't let her son make his own choices and decisions. It's not about him asking his mother these questions. It's that he has to. She won't let him think for himself and have control over his own life. She controls every aspect of his life. It's a beautiful song musically (one of my favorites), but the story it tells in its lyrics is incredibly dark and insidious. Every time I hear the line, "Mother, didn't need to be so high," I wonder if he means high as in high on drugs or if he means high as in high and mighty acting.
Hi Stacey, Here are all the Pink Floyds Concept Albums. 5 concept albums that the band released between 1972 and 1983: Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut. To me all are Masterpieces! Thanks
One of my favourite songs. It's about an over protective mother who does not want to let go of her son. You are spot on with your analysis of the song. The son cannot function socially so builds the wall to keep the outside world out. If you watch the film of The Wall it all becomes clear. The last line does relate to the wall that is built. Also I just want to say that you are fantastic. Beautiful and intelligent lady who loves Pink Floyd. What more could anyone ask for!
I remember buying this album the day it was released. I couldn't wait to unwrap it. I knew right away, I was hearing a masterpiece. I then got the privilege to see it done live. Hands down, the greatest night of my life.
Pink Floyd's music has managed to a fascinating thing: the music has actually managed to transcend time ( speaking of "Time") and so their music all ALWAYS be relevant!

And as a 1st time listener to these songs you have done a amazing job at getting the meaning and the feeling that you get when listening to PF. I'm so excited for you to go further into the psychedelic world that is Pink Floyd. You are becoming a true Floydian 👍
I was 18 years old and in college when this album came out. Of course Dark Side of the Moon was still a staple at that time yet also. The late 1970’s and 1980’s were a great time to be alive. If you listened to Pink Floyd under the right “conditions” it was more incredible than you can ever imagine.
"Mother did it need to be so high" is metaphorical. He's talking about the wall he's slowly building to shut everyone out that's closest to him. His mother is part of that wall
Pink Floyd does such a beautiful job of building instruments and complexity into a song as it progresses. David Gilmour has a unique ability to craft guitar solo's that are uncanny in their ability to further the story of the song and fit in on an emotional level. It just feels like his guitar is singing a non-verbal verse of the lyrics. Comfortably numb, Mother, Hey you and on and on.
The last line, "Mother does it need to be so high?" Refers to "the wall"...which is his psychological "wall" which he builds to protect himself from the world.

Pink Floyd doesn't know this but that song was written for me. It describes the atmosphere I grew up in. I am the youngest of 4 and the only son. "Mamas gonna keep you right here under her wing". Im 62 and to this day its a struggle to sit through this song (even though its genious). Your reaction was beautiful and Im glad I heard it with you. Thank you for that!!!😥
To get the whole picture of 'The Wall' you first need listen to the whole record, then watch the concert movie from Roger Waters 2011 and 2014 tour and finally the movie they released in the beginning of the 80s.
Such a powerful song. Great reaction Stacey! Pink Floyd is so relatable.
Hi Stacey, I first started my love of Pink Floyd when I was 14, I turn 50 in a couple of months, no other band can compare... "Have a cigar" on the wish you were here album is a favourite of mine. And yes it's "Balls"
"momma why does "it" have to be so high" My simple interpretation is "It" being the psychological barrier (The Wall) that a single mother can instill in their kids which can be crippling especially in young men, which is an interesting judging by the present societal Issues single parenthood can create.
I'm 48 and started my Pink Floyd trip in the midle 80's too. 🤘
My brother form another mother!, having Pink Floyd in your back pocket for 30 years to seek solace in has been useful. The band is from my local area, in and around Cambridge, I even went to school in-between the faces of the Division bell Album Cover!...@@adenauerlemos7926

Do you think Stacey is ready to drop acid and watch The Wall? lol.....@@adenauerlemos7926
I also started l9ving Pink Floyd atcthe agecof 14, I'm now 54 a true Floydian through and through. I will forever love pink floyd. No one does it like David does and he does it with such ease . His guitar playing takes you on an almost out of body experience transending time and space you almost feel as if you are flying
Hug- ✌
50 years later and we’re still asking the same questions. Lovely reaction Stacey, keep them coming ❤🏴🇬🇧
mother did it need to be so high, the WALL
Pink Floyd's albums all have a theme and the songs within tell the stories of that theme. The Wall is about the wall we all build to protect who we all are, our inner psyche, hidden fears, aspirations, loves, our emotions that are formed from our interactions with people and life, it is a wall, a facade, a barrier, our strength, our being, our universe - yes, that is why Pink Floyd speaks to us all.
Beautiful song, beautiful woman, beautiful album. Stay safe! 😁
Pink Floyd guarantees music with feeling & emotion.
Mama is building a wall around her 'sweet little boy' to protect him from all evil. - "Mother did it need to be so high...?"
Mama isn't building the wall. Pink is building the psychological wall.
@@neillenet291 Mama is doing her part.
Greetings from Argentina! It's great to hear Pink Floyd with such an honest reaction.
Pink Floyd is an ear experience, with genuine amazing thinkful lyrics🧠 Great reaction 👌
Ahh! The classic overprotective mother. You need to listen to all of it in order to get the full picture! Lovely reaction! Thank you Stacey!
Mother will protect you... But did you have to build the wall so high? I know it is to protect me from hurt... Great reaction as always!!
To get the whole experience of this song you really need to do a reaction to the whole album.. it will blow your mind.. and you will fall in love with this band like we all have... Pink Floyd will always be the best band imo
Pink Floyd Coming Back to Life
'Mother did it need to be so high' is the balance between the trust he has to his mother to do stuff for his safety, and the doubt that being too much protective will hinder, isolate him from many things...
You must never trust governments.
Indeed
It makes me smile in my golden years to find this album is still reaching another generation on this level…a complete story that never loses it’s impact…just listen closely…always, listen closely.
This is a song that truly would benefit from being heard in its actual place in the album time line. However it still stacks up as a stand alone . It is dark.
Walters and Gilmour trade vocals brilliantly. As the characters Pink and Mother
It is dark and when i watch reactors react to this they get the whole song wrong.
@kurtschmidt9760 it's hard to put in context without hearing the record as a whole.
The movie explains the album so well. The best rock opera ever.
It’s on the list :)
I have live at Pompeii on vhs. 😂
I still watch it.
@@StaceyRPGReacts I’ll look forward to it!
I would suggest to listen to the album version first.
Enjoying your PF journey. Congrats on the new kitty 🤗
Stacey ...... I love you !!
Why? ..... because I can see you love Pink Floyd. Closing your eyes and enjoying what you're hearing (I love it). The band was one of my first discoveries in the 70's and they are still my number one.
Thanks for sharing these oldies,
Love (from an oldie) from the Netherlands and keep them coming.
Roger is lyrical God, this album was basically his unofficial autobiography
Wow... what a fantastic find this channel was today. Absolutely love Stacey's take on Pink Floyd's tracks (ive already binge-watched 4 of them back-to-back today!). Pink Floyd are my favorite rock band - particularly after seeing the 'The Wall' live in 1980. Thank you Stacey. greetings from 🇬🇧
Referring to ‘the wall’- why did she need to contribute to its conception as much as she did? Through all her actions and influence mentioned in the song, she built upon Pink’s wall by being as patronising, overprotective and dominant as she was. In this line, he’s asking her- did she really need to be this way? Did she really have to be one of the primary factors of his wall?
Pink never took responsibility for what he done and became, always blaming others.
@@swedishgooner6339 What reign? Of course you can interpret anything however you want. Just look at my wife or daughter and they interpret things vastly different than I. But you are the first I've heard ascribe mother to anything other than his actual mother. I certainly haven't and I've listened to this album on loop. Watched the movie untold amount of times. Listen to it to this day, and I'm over 50. But it's your music too, so listen to it your way and no harm no foul, I say.
The song is writen about Roger Waters own mother.
Forget all the nonsense about Pink etc.......The Wall is Roger Waters life story.....his autobiography .
@@Rassskle So Roger Waters was the leader in the concert where he called out all the people that were different than him and the riots and such? I didn't know he was such a controversial figure.
Pink Floyd is truly one of those bands where their guitars/the music really does speak to you....not just the lyrics but their music really does do something special deep down in your soul
The second brick. An overprotective mother. The first brick was his father’s death. The whole double album was a single story.
Third brick. Methinks you are forgetting the teacher.
Pink Floyd's lyrics are always deep and complex. Waters is a narrative genius. Much of what he tells is autobiographical. If you know his life it will explain many things to you.
The song is about an overbearing mother and the last line "Did it need to be so high" is talking about the wall.
Goosebumps. Reminds me of my dad he used to play this daily. Been listening since I was 4 years old. Just an incredible band. Lucky enough to see Roger Waters in the wall tour with him back in 2012. Best day ever.
i was 16 when this album was released, being a floyd fan this album did not disappoint. it is so refreshing to see youngsters as yourself enjoying real music, keep up the good work stacey and please react to money and sorrow on the pulse concert
Having been a Pink Floyd fan forever, I am really enjoying watching your reactions to their incredible music. They were so very cutting edge and different. You would have been affected forever seeing them in concert as I did in 1992. Love your take on their music!
Can’t listen to one song in the wall understand the songs. Get the movie DVD watch the entire thing and remember it’s about the life and struggles of Roger Waters.
The wall she built. Did it need to be so high?
I was blessed to see this concert 14th row center. Of course the by far best concert I was ever at.
Did it (the Wall) need to be so high ?
Yes, it is here too, Pink Floyd has gotten a hold of you. Very Good. Great Reaction!
That final line might be be related to the figurative 'wall' that is being 'built' during the full story.
You need to check out the entire Movie, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to get the entire concept of the story.
In 2019 I went to watch the Lazer Show at Harrah's Lake Tahoe Showroom and they didn't play this. We were so bummed. 😭
Happy belated 4/20😁😎
Love ya! “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
I toured Europe in the Summer of 1980 and this album was being played everywhere. You couldn't walk past a shop or café where one track or other wasn't being played.
It was part of the fabric of life and became engraved in the psyche.
it's been fun experiencing these songs and my favorite bands through your eyes
My mom bought me a Fender guitar and a Yamaha keyboard and the first song I played for her was this one. I sang, played guitar with my hands and the keyboard with my toes. She answered all the questions and I never forgot. ❤😊
I was introduced to Pink Floyd at 9 yrs old in Cuba, we had to smuggle the cassette tape because we could not listen to rock music from America, my cousins listened to this tape countless hours until the tape wore out…and that is why I appreciate Pink Floyd….just awesome music!!!❤🎉
I saw them in 1986 just before I went to the Army....
Best show I've ever seen. Watch the wall or just kick back in your bed on a rainy day.....sweetness
...
You perceiving this song as a very caring mother-son conversation speaks volumes of your true spirit. You did catch some of the toxic questions and answers and it will make sense when you react to the album or movie.
Just love watching you react to Pink Floyd! They are indeed a WONDERFUL band!!!
I am so happy that you and other younger people have discovered Pink Floyd. Thank you for staying with the most awesome band ever!
Hi Stacey,
Here are all the Pink Floyds Concept Albums.
Yes one of my favourite groups 🎼⭐️🪨⭐️🪨⭐️🪨⭐️🪨1️⃣🇦🇺☯️👂💯💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣❤
So glad I found you as you are discovering pink floyd. Can't wait to join you on your journey. Welcome to the machine!
the last verse in the song, he is asking did the wall have to be so high. His mother built a wall around him
I remember buying this album the day it was released. I couldn't wait to unwrap it. I knew right away, I was hearing a masterpiece. I then got the privilege to see it done live. Hands down, the greatest night of my life.
Pink Floyd's music has managed to a fascinating thing: the music has actually managed to transcend time ( speaking of "Time") and so their music all ALWAYS be relevant!
you help bring tears to my eyes, thank you very much
and for the 1980 live' version david does a double solo and the song works in a different way but just as awsome
Stacey, I have loved your reactions to Pink Floyd. Watching you fall in love with them is so wonderful. And as a 1st time listener to these songs you have done a amazing job at getting the meaning and the feeling that you get when listening to PF. I'm so excited for you to go further into the psychedelic world that is Pink Floyd. You are becoming a true Floydian 👍
Thank you Stacey for reacting to this one. Your personal Pink Floyd sojourn is an enlightening experience.
I was 18 years old and in college when this album came out. Of course Dark Side of the Moon was still a staple at that time yet also. The late 1970’s and 1980’s were a great time to be alive. If you listened to Pink Floyd under the right “conditions” it was more incredible than you can ever imagine.
The devouring mother!!! Freud talks about it and recently Jordan peterson
Love your comments Stacey! You seem like a really warm person! Love your cats too! :)
