  • In this video, I forge a miniature hammer for a former tutor, Pete Smith. Pete is an amazing chap whose nickname is "the wizard" and for very good reason. Pete, alongside Chris, Adrian and Dave, is one of the people without whom I would not be where I am today. Have a look at his website: www.wherethelightgetsin.co.uk
I apologise for the delay with the next series, I have had some techical difficulties and it will start next Saturday!

That is an *AWESOME* retirement gift. It looks as he has everything needed to forge 10d nails into broadswords for pixies (Except for the forge itself!). A collection of tools like that shows a man that is profoundly loved and respected. It also indicates a man that would have a sense of humor.

I was at the blacksmithing school last year until I took an injury, and by god is Pete a good guy. it's a shame he's finishing there.

Nice, I use a ball peen a bit smaller than that quite a lot in knife making, if it was my hammer it'd get used for sure. May have to make one like that for myself.

When he was putting the wedge in he said something about, "Like a proper hammer." I say that _IS_ a proper hammer, just delicate.

I wish I could have had Pete as a tutor. I practically made him jump out of his chair during my interview at HLC. I told him that I still had a lot to learn and I thought he was going to hit the ceiling.

why did you wear gloves towards the end of the video? to stop the dirt getting into the handle?

Because shop bought "boiled" linseed oil isn't boiled anymore, but instead has added metal salts as "driers" to help it polymerize faster..
Some of those salts aren't exactly good for your health, and can relatively easily cross the skin barrier, I don't know if it's still the case but, lead salts where commonly used for example...

he was wearing the gloves before he was handling the linseed oil, but that could well be the reason why.
generally, in the UK, we don't have lead in anything if it can be avoided, but yeah, there is definitely added goodies to help it dry faster these days.
