Great advice Jonathan, much to think about, thank you. We made a costly mistake with our first motorhome so we're selling up after 6 months 😬. We love van life and are now looking for the next one. Really good video. One thing I’d emphasise is when in a potential van do a few role plays to get a feel how it would work. For example “bed time” - where’s the bedding, convert the bed, make the bed, go to loo, brush teeth, read in bed, get up for the loo, go back to bed, wake up, put it all way….is this okay as you will do it every day? Can do similar for cooking tea, quiet night in……
What an excellent idea Peter!! I've watched many vids on buying a van, different layouts and models. And after about 5 months of researching eventually found what we thought was the best ever!! After doing a really long tour of 16 weeks in Europe we discovered that it wasn't our "third motorhome first". 😢 Every expert says know how you're going to use the van. How do you know if you've only caravanned? Until you actually try it. We wanted narrow/compact. Tick, but it turned out the passage was too narrow and awkward to shuffle past each othe, and we're not oversized. Fridge and freezer were minute. The freezer was about the size of a 6 pack. Wardrobe space under the feet of the bed meant sitting on the steps to try to get your clothes out each morning. Every morning. 🙄 After 6 months we've decided to sell, take the big financial hit, and look for a more suitable layout. I couldn't agree with you more a our role playing. Great tip.. Thanks. And probably Jonathan's tip of hiring a van of the same or similar layout.
Great video with some very good tips. I’d just like to add if buying secondhand check for any cracks in the shower tray. These can be just hairline but are a major PITA to sort out…and expensive. Also, as you mentioned the ULEZ, be very wary if non compliant and over 3.5t. TfL charges £100 a day for euro 4 and 5…and £200 a day for euro 3 and below! A few years ago I uprated my MoHo from 3.5t to 4.2t and it was reasonably straightforward, pretty much just a paperwork issue. Once Mr Khan changed the LEZ/ULEZ rules I looked into downplating and it’s not a simple process. It’s not just a case of getting back down to 3.5t, you have to prove that you’ve got adequate payload so you need to get the van down to something like 2.8t. Couldn’t do it with mine as I had twin wheelbase with rear wheel drive , a very heavy van, I was surprised it was ever rated at 3.5t. Parted with it now but it was reluctant as it was such a good van
Hi I've see a elddis 124 with an end bed and garage that I think would suit me and my dog, I have a mercedes vito campervan wich is nice and my dog can sleep in the awning but when he has to sleep in the van when I've got the rock and roll beds there isn't much room.
It amazes me that 6m + C1 vehicles with only 140 bhp are still being specced by manufacturers. And if Auto Gear box get prior 2024 as all manufacturers stopped using tge worlds best gearbox manufacturer. Ford have a serious issue over the wetbelt issues so something to be in mind of.
Ill be coming back to UK in the next couple of months. No intention of staying as it rains too much so looking at sunny spain as my final destination. My requirements are pretty specific. Want Auto left hooker 160 - 180 hp not Ford. Bench seats front drop down double. Fixed island bed to rear. I'm 6'3" tall so need a big old lump. Budget 100k. @@theonemotorhome

Excellent advice...Can't afford one yet but looking.. My ideal accommodation, lift up bed In the front ,full bathroom in the back, huge fridge, and washing machine I the garage.. Can you help please ?
The layout isn't a problem, I can find you s morothome with that no worries. You might get lucky and find a washing machine that someone has installed themselves. (They don't tend to come as standard in the UK) But you can always get that installed once you have the motorhome. It's not something uk dealers really get involved in.
Hi Jonathan. Really informative video thank you. I have been making enquiries regarding a new Swift. The local dealer says that they are not allowed by Swift to discount the price. Is that a real thing? If so what other things are good to negotiate for a good deal?

Hi Jonathan Great Videos. I am retired, just received my renewed driving licence (C1 now removed). Been researching motor homes online for sometime and the sub 6 m motor home - the Rollerteam T-line 590 looked interesting but there are weight issues. We haven’t owned a motor home before and feel that it would be good for our retirement and Springer spaniel. My wife retires this year. We do not know of any decent dealers here in the SW of Scotland. Would value your thoughts.
Yea the 590 is a lovely compact motorhome and at a good price range. I am sorry but I haven't had any dealings with Scottish Swift dealers. If you find anything you like in the UK then let me know and I'll get you a good price 👍💯
Hi Jonathon. I would like to pay you to do some research on my behalf. I live in Australia and retire and move to France in 2026. I will be buying a motorhome through a company who deals with Ex-Pats from other countries. I will need to place an order for a new motorhome by Easter 2025 if I want to take delivery by June 2026. Problem - sight unseen of any European/British motorhomes. Can I ask (remember - pay) you to compare two motorhomes for me and advise which you think would be most suitable/your opinion , if I give you two particular models to compare. Good thinking, but honestly those things are very cheap in the grand scheme of things. Your road tax will he between £165 = £400. Insurance aversges between £300 - £800. There are lots of minor details that I don't mention in the vid. But I didn't want to make the video too long. Under 44 years old C1 will be needed to drive a vehicle over 3500kg . You will need a test , a medical and a theory test. Then you have to do it every year. Disgusting.
