I started with ducks before chickens. Man they are messy but lovely creatures. I kept seeing so many people getting ducks and keeping them on layer feed without any brewers yeast and they started suffering horribly. Its so good to get that information out there and help people who want ducks to know the goods and the bads and how to take care of these wonderful babies.

Thank you, I agree! I see so many ducks suffer from niacin deficiency every year and it could easily be stopped with a little due diligence done before purchasing them

RE heat lamps… I’ve now met 3different people who’s had devastating fires from them, after years of using them. I’ve told them about using ceramic “bulbs” instead of heat bulbs.
Also, ducks splash water quite far, and one drop on a lightbulb will cause it to explode.
Nowadays I use a coop heater for small areas. I do still use ceramic heaters in hanging lamps for large areas, with wire screening guards in case of them getting disconnected and falling.

Great video. I would not recommend using a kiddie pool. Ducklings can be quite athletic and can get out of a pool. If they get out, they'll unlikely be able to get back in which can be dangerous if they can't get back to the heat source. I've also used a dog pen, but always needed to have something at the bottom to stop them from slipping through for the first week or so.

Happy to help! I would recommend start with at least 2 ducks, 3 would be even better. They don’t do well without other ducks and many states have a legal minimum you can purchase which is usually 2-3 but can be as high as 12 ducklings like in Rhode Island!

I started off with ducks and chickens. They’re amazing really messy. They mix up the food and water together which is really annoying because the food for the chickens and ducks are really expensive. Are there about $20 each and I also have to buy food for our horses which makes it 10 times expensive, so I usually get mad at them for mixing up the water with food but creatures I don’t think they know anything about that. They are insanely adorable. They start laying eggs and I’m getting a new pair of them but they are hard to keep alive because of all the hawks😢 but I found this amazing thing on Amazon and it helps me keep my ducks and chickens alive they could be a little bit of a troublemaker😅

I give my ducklings a gooseneck lamp with a 40-60w bulb..I start them in a Rubbermaid large tub with offset lid ..also I use straw and cotton rags and old torn up clothes...just toss them afterwards... Seems to work fine...also heat lamps are safe, but require daily due diligence to keep them dust free and clean...although a risk still exists...✌🏻🥂👁️💕🦆

This is why I never used a heat lamp per se. I used an office lamp for my 5 ducklings. It had this terrible habit of heating up so we never used it for the office but it worked for the ducks. Luckily living in a super warm climate, ducklings could be outside on our porch during the day as soon as they got a bit bigger.

We actually got a couple wild ducks in our pond and they hatched 13 ducklings last week. I don’t know if you know a lot about wild ducklings or duck behaviour, but you’re surely right about ducklings being messy lol. I always thought it was the mom who lead the pack and the ducklings would follow her around but in our yard the ducklings are all over the place lol and the mom is constantly chasing them all over our yard and pond to keep them together.
Something weird happened a couple of days ago: out of nowhere the mom and all ducklings disappeared for 2 whole days. Which is a bit strange since our yard is closed off with a fence, which I guess if they really tried could be broken out of. As of yesterday the mom and 7 ducklings returned. Do you know why a wild duck mom would do that? Do they go exploring or something or look for other water? Maybe you don’t know but I have no idea who to ask about this lol.

When I got my 2 ducklings I had a heat lamp for them and it ended up exploding and glass went everywhere this happened twice but they were just getting feathers so we decided they didn’t need another one (they was fine as we gave them blankets and pillows to cuddle up too) and they lived in my conservatory but as tiny babies was in a “rabbit cage” (quotes on that as it was too small for a rabbit but good for ducks 🦆) and the door was open so they would go into the garden and in there doggy pool so they was happy ducks now they are still treated like royalty as they my babies and they are close to having their on little quackery so I’m recapping on duckling care lol

What type of sand do you recommend? I know for chickens, river sand is best due to the variation of particle sizes to prevent clumping in their crops, is this the same for ducks? Thank you for this, I hope it helps a lot of new duck owners and ducklings to thrive.

Do I need to bring them in at some point so that they don’t overheat? And instead of a heater should I invest in some sort of ac?
