If this song comes on when I'm at the grocery store, people better look out and get out of my way! There is no way NOT to get caught up in this song! My Mom was a big fan, so I started listening to his music at about five years old. Still works!
I was born in 1997, and I bought my first members only jacket in 2015, I distinctly remember hearing this in my head when I first saw it on the rack at the thrift store. This memory will live with me gor the next few decades at least
This song and "Video killed the radio star" were the two songs that kicked off the 80s. 1980 was an interesting year - that little era between disco falling flat on its face a year earlier (after being absolutely run into the ground during 1977/1978), and the beginning of MTV a year later, so I guess it's appropriate to have a song about changing trends (and expressing a degree of indifference towards them) during a big "changeover" era for trends
1979 and 1980 were definitely unique and wonderfully weird years for music, the New Wave era began with these songs you mentioned plus "Cars" by Gary Numan (1979) and "Whip It" by Devo (early 1980). It's kind of ironic the Grammys created a disco category in 1980, a year it was in freefall. Disco was actually still popular in 1979 and 1980 but something different had happened, that was the first time teens started using "mainstream" as an insult (at least that I know of, I could be wrong), "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang reaching the Top 10 in early 1981 was what could be called the last hurrah of disco (unless you count "It's Raining Men" in 1982, which always was a "guilty pleasure" song, nobody admitted they liked it to their friends). The Cars and REO Speedwagon also were great bands that exemplified the decade change sound. That was also around the time cassettes overtook 8-tracks in popularity (and just a little over a decade later, CDs would do that to cassettes).
I still remember this being the perfect song for radio at the time as it was nearly always played right through from start to finish. A 2:58 time capsule that still sounds just as great today as it ever has. Thanks Billy. 😎✌
Billy Joel is a talented musician. Anyone who does not believe that, well... let me put it this way. He is nicknamed "The Piano Man" for a reason. He has composed over 100 songs in his career in addition to "Piano Man."
Billy Joel was one of best maybe 5 writers and singers of the 70s and the 80s and one of the best selling recording artists of that age. Like so many artists of the day, no one was like Billy Joel. He put out a dozen albums, so yes he probably wrote several times that many. He had 114 songs just on his 12 studio albums but there were probably at least three times that many songs in his repertoire.
One of the most diverse ever and he confidently explored different genres. He’s done Gospel, Rock (obviously), even revived Doo Wop and tried out Reggae (his producer made him redo it without the steel pan and stuff). Been all over the board and imo never missed.
