English has been terrible with foreign words. Since French/German/Spanish use the same alphabet/characters, we just took the word into our language without modification. So you need to have an idea of where the word came from if you've never heard it pronounced before. Words like Colonel are impossible for non-English speakers to get right (it's a French word that we destroyed). If we took a queue from Japanese and took the word and made it spelled/sound like regular English words, it would be much easier to learn.

Chinese doesn't have alphabet. Pinyin is not alphabet. Alphabet's purpose is to help you read. A learner of Chinese has to learn every ideogram the hard way, and there are no hints as to pronunciation from the shape of the either radicals or the ideograms.

  • @tuleralph6031

Why have pinyin and characters simultaneously 🤔
Seems redundant. It's time for the characters to be retired along with cursive writing in the west.
