The only reason I purchased a dryer years ago is to dry large bedsheets and bath towels in it because those take forever to dry, and it's hard to do multiple loads in one day. But for pretty much everything else, I use a drying rack. It's gentler on your clothes and you save on energy cost. 😊

That's what I was wondering. Many only own a portable washer and let it air dry. Easy enough to hang clothes.
But with sheets and towels, it's not enough space in apartment for clothes rack that big.
Unless you have a clothes line, I miss those, or a backyard to put big clothes rack, you really need a portable dryer. Because the portable washers I see, the clothes come out damp. Machines do well with extracting water from clothes.

I use a 5 gallon pail and a toilet plunger. I plunge them for about 30 seconds and then let them soak for a few hours. Rinse in clean water, and then hang up to dry. It took about a 100 dollars off my 3 month water bill.

Good idea. Wringing out the clothes is the tough part. Light cotton dresses and tops are easy in summer. It's the bulky knits and jeans that are more difficult to manage. Now that I'm retired I might just wear them out and replace with lighter items.

That's what i do! Wringing IS a little tough, they still drip a little bit on the line. I tried doing my rolling pin on a wood, but just shived it around and was awkward. I'm thinking about making a second rolling pin and lashing them together and making a wringer. They're way too expensive for a 'real' one lol

I totally agree, I live in a small 1bd/bth and didn't even know these existed until 2 years ago. For under the price of one full machine, I outfitted my kitchen with a full functioning mini laundry corner. Totally worth every penny to never go back to a laundromat again!

Years ago, I lived in a third floor walkup. Bought a stackable, but separate portable washer/dryer (used) the first week I lived there, and it became my favorite thing in the whole apartment. It’s nice that it’s no longer a chore I loathe because of the extra annoying steps of using a laundry room. I don’t have a dryer but usually it’s not a problem to just hang stuff up. I wouldn’t mind having one though.

If the water is super duper gross I empty in the toilet. The secret to not letting it overflow when the water collects in the orange bucket you can monitor the water level (as the bucket is faintly transparent and changes to a datker shade of orange wherever the waterlevel is)

OMG I would love to have that Morus dryer 😩 I literally love my apartment that I've been living in for the past 5 years, but the community coined laundry is literally my only complaint. It's been so frustrating, it's $2 in quarters 1 wash, $2 for dry. I dread laundry not only because of that, but I'm always having to wait for another tenant to take their stuff out & they sometimes keep it in there so long I have to skip laundry for the day. I want to be able to do laundry when I want on my time. I want to switch to the same method you're doing, but both washer dryer are a lot on me right now June & July have been the hardest on me financially. you want to not tax those little washers. lived in flatbush had one of those for a couple years. if you over stuff them, it'll burn out the motor, or threads/misc stuff will get caught up in the drum, or just not work as well/clean as well.

A few commenters explain how they just use a simple plunger & bucket for laundry & hang clothes to dry. We also dropped laundromats by using a spinner to wring water, wash most by hand & hang things in bathroom to dry. With old heater pipe that's in apt bathrm it's like a large dryer esp if we run a small fan. No risk of flooding & saves rather than using laundromats. Can understand the LL, but this approach is ok. Great w/o lots of laundry to wash.

Freedom from the laundromat! Branded Chinese machine I've been using for a couple years is a "Panda", looks almost identical. Does a fantastic job. As good as any full size front loader, great hack. Very light weight and easy to move from where I store it to where I plug it into the bathroom faucet. (And drain into the tub.). With once or twice a week use, has paid for itself at least 2X compared to what I would have spent in quarters. They have a pretty aggressive spin cycle, so one may need to stick some folded cardboard, or something, under a corner foot to keep it from rocking on old, out of level NYC apt floors. I line dry, works fine, but the dryer is a civilized touch. #nomorelaundromat.

I've been considering trying these portable appliances. My current apartment has hookups and space for full size machines, but I have to move every 3-4 years with rent constantly increasing, and sometimes I can bring machines with me and sometimes I can't. Right now I'm renting machines just because you can call and have them taken away when you move that way, but I'm considering machines like these so that I can just bring them with me wherever I move to.

I have a similar washer. Some tips:
1 on my machine "air dry" means air drying the machine, aka blowing out the hoses and drum of the empty washer, for last load of the day to keep moisture from causing odors etc. It is not meant for air drying the clothing because that is what the spin function is for.
2 hook up your hose to the faucet and turn your water on before you start the machine. The connector holds the water back from running until you are ready and it does NOT cause dangerous amount of pressure on your plumbing. You should not hear that humming sound of your washer waiting for water...you are causing undue wear and tear on it that way. You are fast to get it turned on but the longer you hear that noise the harder it is on your machine and could potentially burn up the motor.
3 also when you are done and need to disconnect your hose from the faucet first turn the water off. Then lay a dish cloth over the connector while you are separating it. The water is still under pressure and will spray when it comes off. It's not a lot of water but can be quite a surprise so save yourself a spray to the face.
4 use less soap in general. Run about a gallon of water before you add soap or bleach etc then add the clothes. The agitation on these machines is not as strong as a normal machine. This will dilute the soap from getting in your clothes full strength and will help you get a better rinse.

@@lilpeeva you are welcome! I have another trick with this, you seem to have secured your drain hose from your dish drainer. The rest of us are praying. Haha I ended up taking 2 ponytail holders and splinting the hoses together in two different places. Since one hose goes directly to the faucet...if they are tied together the other one can't be far from the drain. Also the saddle piece that shapes the hose into a U to hang on the sink divider can be adjusted along the hose so it may help get the hose in a place where it doesn't slide around as much.

That's a great setup! I had no idea portable dryers were even a thing. I'd love to have that setup in my current apartment, but they're not allowed under the lease-I have to use the building's machines, which are pretty expensive. I'm planning to move, and since many apartments don’t have in-unit washers/dryers or hookups, I’m definitely going to ask if portable ones are permitted before I sign a lease. I really hope I find a place I like and can afford where they allow it.

I live in NYC. The laundromat around the block corner is $2.50 for the small wash machine, and I do 42 minutes of low heat dry at $0.25 per 7 minutes. $4.00 per wash. The two machines total $850 before tax, well above $900 after (don't know about shipping). That's 4 and a half years of weekly washing, and at a significantly smaller capacity, and what I can only assume to be less cleaning performance than actual commercial-level washing machines. Don't get me wrong, I would love to not have to carry my laundry around the block, but... this ain't it, chief.

i see what you are saying but i think there is more perspective that can be given: 1. NYC is a big city with incredibly expensive apartments and even very small apartments tend to be very expensive bc of the location, meaning many people living there, although not living in a very luxurious looking place for what they are paying for it would likely be able to afford these machines or it would be worth it for them for the time/energy they save. 2. Dryer machine would not be as useful as a washing machine since air drying is always an option and not too difficult usually, so it could be done by only purchasing the washing machine which would make it a lot less . (However, i do not know how these products would be effecting your electric and water bills so that should be taken to account as well) . 3. For the perfomance of cleaning, im not sure how it compares but honestly, maybe if that is a concern someone could just do regular washes in there but for their clothes but for maybe things that require deeper cleans or sheets or blankets, could take it to a laundromat

Personally, I prefer hooking this up into the bath shower as opposed to a kitchen sink. Reason being that by connecting to the faucet as you have set up here you actually you rather beat up the faucet itself and cause it to wear out. If you notice how much the faucet bobs up and down when you connect the hose, that's not good as it puts a lot of strain on it. However, if you buy an attachment that allows you to hook this up to the shower head instead it's a much more secure fitting that doesn't have any slack in it as a kitchen sink would. Also the drain being lower to the ground in the tub means you don't have to have the drain hose suspended high up in the air making things just be a little bit more secure and clean in the end.

    • @lilpeeva

@@lilpeeva since my earlier reply to this apparently didn't meet the UA-cam comment guidelines as it used an external link, Google "Ian Gay, connect a washing machine to a shower head." (that actually is his last name, btw) the only change to the setup I would make would be to instead of using the long, 8 foot hose that he uses I would instead get a 4 ft long one and have the permanent connection be at the shower head where he has the quick connect. And have a quick connect be at the end of the 4 ft hose so it could then connect to another 4 ft coming off the back of machine. That way you could just simply leave the hose hooked up in the shower where it will largely be out of the way and just very easily use the Quick Connect at the midpoint between the two hanging over the shower basin. If for any reason if there is to be a leak it will likely be at the quick connect and having it be that way it'll just a drain away easily. Oh, and try to put some Vaseline on the Quick Connect points. You'll keep it lubricated for EZ connect hookups that way.

I know plastic bottles are recyclable, but I prefer powdered detergent because it comes in a cardboard box. The bonus is that it is also cheaper!
I remember my grandmother's washer had a 'water saver' setting. Her hose hung into the laundry sink, similar to yours, but right to the bottom. With the plug in the deep laundry sink, her wash and rinse water filled it almost to the top. She would start with her hottest /cleanest load and save the water for the second, cooler /dirtier load. The hose would suck the water back into the machine for a second use, which was great!
