In German the movie title is nothing new in the west (Im Westen nichts neues) and it's the name of the book. Kinda odd that they changed it for the English version
I remember when I first clicked on this movie I thought it was going to be some sort of silent film, which would explain the name "all quiet on the western front". They began speaking german and I was like "oh okay, so it's not". But somehow, not once, did I think that I was beginning to lay my eyes upon a masterpiece of a film. To anybody who has not watched All Quiet on the Western Front, I highly urge you to do so. This movie is emotionally capturing and will take you along with the characters, both in sadness and happiness.
The original black and white film is incredibly moving… probably the greatest piece of anti-war media ever created. It’s really crazy to know that used legitimate WWI German vets as sergeants and officers to train the extras how to look and act like German soldiers

You are right, they stormed movie theaters and released rats and threw stink bombs. After they came to power in 1933 they outright banned the book and the movie.
Yeah, most anti-war material was considered "degenerate art" by that ghoulish regime. Thankfully they didn't get my main man Otto Dix, a much better painter and soldier than the Nazi leader. That Nazi guy did finally make quite an interesting painting in 1945 though.
The author left the country before the start of the war, but in 44 (if remember correctly) they framed his sister has a resistence member and killed her... The judge of the case literally said "we can't get your brother, so you will have to do"
The dude getting ran over by a tank is casually in the edit?!? That scene made me sick to my stomach, one of many disturbing scenes in that epic movie!
My great grandad fought in Gallipoli and after being shot twice and a hernia operation he volunteered to go back and fight in the 3rd Battle of Ypres in WW1 where he was blown up and lost his leg. I can't even imagine the horrors he witnessed but he was a lucky one. I have 3 other relatives who all died on the 1st day of the Somme. War is horrific and my family has experienced their fair share.
I mean, "nothing new" doesnt necessarily mean "quiet". The west was a meat grinder, people dying by the thiusands daily for practically no gain. So i took it more as meaning "people are dying, frontlines aren't moving, nothing new"
The literal meaning of the title of the book in the original German "Nothing New to Report in the West," as referenced in the video. The book itself was banned by the Nazi regime for portraying a grim side of war; old habits die hard as Germans in general continued to romanticize war and the government was not one to portray the German soldier as ever being weak. It was not just about propaganda but rather a commentary on German culture who believed themselves to be a noble warrior people and how was a glorious thing. That part was subtly woven into the movie, and most people who don't have the primer on how German society thought about war would miss it. Knowing this fact would make the story more impactful as it challenged not just the beliefs of individuals but the beliefs of the collective society, too.
"All quiet on the western front is a remake of 2 movies. The first movie based on a book made by Paul Baumer a german ww1 veteran (cool channel keep it up dude)
Wrong!!! It’s the ending of the book. Not common or even proven to have happened. In the book it says Paul was shot on a day that was so quiet all over the front that the newspapers just road all quiet on the western front.
Not the news papers, but the official German report of the day. Paul was, it can be assumed, killed by a sniper on an otherwise quiet day, and probably the only casualty. His death wasn't even significant enough to make it into the daily report of the front, and its heart breaking.
If you read the book, you will know that "Im Westen nichts neues" is the frontline report of the day when the protagonist days and I think also the last words of the book
he was the reason Germany entered the war in the first place. Bismarck wanted Germany to be an international hub of peace and prosperity, however the Kaiser changed everything with his anti-diplomatic and even aggressive policy to the rest of Europe
@@spqqq_ Uhhh nice try, the Kaiser is a great man and he was just protecting German’y place in the sun. The other powers of Europe were working together in secret to destroy Germany.
It actually has to do with the last line in the book, when he died on a day that was so quiet the only report from the front was “All quiet on the western front.”
The title is more referring to how people dying was the unremarkable norm on the Frontline. That, as long as there was no ground gained or lost, it wasn't worth reporting. It was not a commentary on propaganda.
i love this movie because it shows some people the reality of war, how its not all glory and victory or "fun", as much as i love war movies i think its good that this one teaches some people the reality
The quote itself was read by the author of the book in a newspaper while back in Germany on leave from the front. Having his friends deaths basically swept under the rug boiled his piss so much that he never forgot the phrase
This is a complete lie. The English title comes from the ending of the book, where the main character dies at the end of the war, "on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front." It's very clear that the situation in which he died was uneventful, which makes sense, not everyone dies in some crazy battle. Why would you even bother to make this up🤦♂️
The book’s title derives from the final message from German High Command, which is the last line of the book. It’s meant to say that the war there was over, and it was all quiet because nobody needed to fight there any longer.
That might just only be in translation. As the book's final line is, as stated in the short: Im Westen nichts neues (nothing new in the west). Referring to what you conclude to the line.
My Relitive Thomas Francis fought on the Western fought. He was gassed by the enemy's but later returned to the war, but sadly, he was shot by a Germans machine gun
Same thing going on in the Ukraine invasion war, both sides saying they're winning but the only ones that know what's up are the soldiers on the Frontline.
not only that, the novel was written a German veteran, the novel was then filmed by a director who hired both German vets and French vets to be as real as possible. the two hands holding onto the bared wire was an actual occurrence that one of the vets seen after a artillery bombardment.
The name comes from a novel of the same name which is based on a report from the German army in 1918, which reads the same as the title, and is from the (spoiler alert) mc’s death date in the novel
It is an impossible task to do any book justice with a motion picture. Most try to portray it the best they can imagine from the book. That imagination is individually subjective, but historical accuracy is an objective take. So it's a mix of both in this case. There are also some things a movie can do better than a book.
the other two movies from the 30s and 70s also took their own liberties with writing. the book is better, but the 2022 remake gave me the same feelings as the book, whereas the other movies didnt (at least not to the same degree)
The reveal that Paul had carried Kats body back, fully believing his friend was alive, and the medical guys basically go "oh yeah, he dead, put him over there." That was one of the greatest, most depressing reveals and the movie shat on that. And Tejaden (can't spell his name) didn't kill himself, he wanted out at any cost and got imprisoned, injured, etc to do so.
@@jacobturner1490 I think its spelt tjaden, but yeah I also heard that Kat died differently in the movie (I've honestly never watched it I feel like ill just get irritated). Does it have the scene with him and the soldier that he killed and watched slowly die? Or did that just not get included
The modern movie is actually based off an old movie by the same name. Which was made by accounts of veterans who served and a journal from a soldier who served in the war as well
"All quiet on the western front" is a 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, influenced by his experience of the war. This film is nothing like the book, apart from character names. The two previous films are far more accurate to the original story, and the book is well worth a read if you get the chance
The original got the messaging right, this movie just seemed more focused on gore, and some of the plot elements were changed to be far more silly. The final battle is completely fake and the way kat dies is so random and hilarious it took me out of the movie
No. The title comes from Paul’s death. He was shot by a sniper. But since there were no big losses of men; the day was reported as “all quiet on the western front”. It’s to show how inconsequential a single loss of life is to a military machine.
This was probably my favourite WW2 movie. Its a literal nightmare of grim death, large bulks of metal that gun down anything alive, and the horrors of deception
I loved this Book, it still is my first book that I truly enjoy each and every time. My first time reading it was in High School in English. It was a Ride and very few were interested in it. I was, I love War Novels, War Games, and was even a Soldier in the US Army. The show depicts horrors, to me it depicts reality. Call me Pragmatic but War is Always Hell, that’s why we fight. Cuz a little bit of Hell Rises when we Fight.
Funfact: the german titel of the movie is " im westen nichts neues " ="nothing new in the west" I have no idea why the English titel is different, but since its basically means the same thing it isnt as important i believe.
This movie was absolutely touching to the bone. It is cold, as the first world war was, it was bleak, as the first world war was. And Paul’s story was fucking crazy.. I am a science-fiction fan, however, this movie is one of my absolute favorite movie experiences of all time.
you sir,, are a fool. while these men contributed to history they did it with their lives. saying it would be an honor to serve alongside these men is like saying it would be an honor to serve alongside nazis because they "contributed to history". they arent people to look up to, they are people who you should feel lucky not to have served with.
It not about a news article but instead the daily messages written in the german high command diary, they usually only wrote something down when there was a change of the military situation or some bigger attacks that were fought off, but to let the main character die on a day where this would be noted in the Diary is of course a genius move and shows the tragic for millions of soldiers in WW1 on all sides. Its not about the media or public because the longer the war went on they felt the impact on the society, but more about the High Command and Leaders who loose their touch with the simple soldier and only note down big events while the dying and horror of war continues daily

The book is an awesome anti-war epic. This latest film completely misses about 100% of this message and it is just another war film, of which there are dozens. I consider the film an absolute failure and the ending is nothing less than farcical .
Early today I was showering and out of no where “all quiet in the western front” came into my head and I immediately asked myself why the films title is that, fast forward to en, and I come across this video ??¿
Spoilers for film and the book in my thoughts below. I always thought the title "All Quiet on the Western Front" was a reference to the crushing drudgery of the war, compared to the idealistic dreams of the young men expecting a glorious adventure. And that's the biggest problem I have with the film, the book ends with the protagonist's death not even narrated, it's not special, just killed like millions of others. He's just another name on a list to be ignored by everyone as just another casualty. There was no heroics, no glory, no one other than his loved ones will remember him for very long. The film bugged me because it has him going down in a epic final battle, tanking multiple hits and taking down numerous enemies with him, finally dying in a heroic martyr pose. It completely misses the point of the book that you don't get an epic end, you die randomly in the mud and it won't raise an eyebrow for anyone.
You watch this movie and your political ideologies suddenly leave your mind.. you are no longer left or right.. war is bad.. soldiers are heroes.. every life is precious
I'm not that sure if it's exactly that reason. The novel on which the movie is based is called "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. Spoiler: In this novel, the story ends with the main character dying on a day, which was besides his death being totally calm. If I remember right, the MC just went to the No Man's Land for some small task like fixing something and got shot there. And because that day was quiet and a single death did not matter much in wartime, the commander of the west flank just reported that the west was all quiet. I mean, it kind of has similarities with the phenomenon you mentioned, but it's more to do with the story of the book than the news paper reports in Germany.
Watching this movie is hard, it's really mentally challenging.
Now just imagine what those soldiers felt like fighting this war.

@@Ahnenerbe1944 I haven't watched the original one.

@jonathanallard2128 at least Saving Private Ryan had a relatively good ending. This was just depressing
I think the reason the movie was called all quiet on the western front was because the book was called all quiet on the western front
and why was the book called that
The book was written in German, and the title translates most directly to "Nothing New in the West".
And guess why the book was called that
@@steelcladCompliant it was a common newspaper headline for the era. It's an ironic title which implies that the horrific violence is not just "nothing new", but was regarded by non-combatants as not even worthy of significant attention.
@@tiberiusalexander6339 I know. It is explained in the video
The Nazis boycotted the original movie in the 30s. Probably the book also.
The judge of the case literally said "we can't get your brother, so you will have to do"
If I remember correctly it wasn't well liked by the nazis for being "anti-german", and banned I think in Poland for being "pro-german

Ironic that both the Polish and the Germans hated seeing Germans humanized.
The dude getting ran over by a tank is casually in the edit?!? That scene made me sick to my stomach, one of many disturbing scenes in that epic movie!
CGI for this part is completely wrong, in real life it's 10 times worse
One thing to note is that the German name of the book is “In Westen Front Nichts Neues,” which means “Nothing New in the Western Front.”
I had a feeling that was the case, thanks!
Damn you chose quite the scene to use
I can't begin to imagine what it must have been like for the soldiers on the front. Must have been hell on earth.
Read the book, its Abow the movie by far
Deepest and most beautifully filmed war movie ever made. I’ll sing it’s praise forever
Did you know that "All quiet on the Western Front" and that Netflix abomination are different stories?
That's actually such a genius title.
They are basically clowning on the Newspapers
There is no war in Ba Sing Se

Western front in ww1:💀
Eastern front ww2: 💀
Eastern front ww1: 😨
My thoughts
"All quiet on the western front is a remake of 2 movies. The first movie based on a book made by Paul Baumer a german ww1 veteran (cool channel keep it up dude)
Paul Baumer didn’t write the book, he doesn’t even exist, because he’s the main character of the book. Erich Maria Remarque wrote the book.
This is true. The book ending hits way harder imo cause it‘s so matter of fact.
I really don’t think the Kaiser would lie about progress being made on the Western Front. He is a great and reasonable man.
When have leaders ever lied to their people before? It’s unthinkable!
he was the reason Germany entered the war in the first place.
@@ryanrusch3976because the kaiser pissed each and every one of them off 😂😂
@thebigflop3118 the formation of the German empire itself made them pissed off because it completely disrupted the balance of power in europe
It actually has to do with the last line in the book, when he died on a day that was so quiet the only report from the front was “All quiet on the western front.”
Eastern Front, WW1: 💀
Eastern Front, WW2: 💀💀💀
The title is more referring to how people dying was the unremarkable norm on the Frontline. That, as long as there was no ground gained or lost, it wasn't worth reporting. It was not a commentary on propaganda.
The proper title of that film should be "A Movie Inspired by All Quiet on the Western Front".
This so much.

Interesting! I watched this film not to long ago. I thought it was a great movie, I recommend it.
First comment!
i love this movie because it shows some people the reality of war, how its not all glory and victory or "fun", as much as i love war movies i think its good that this one teaches some people the reality

Rogue One turned up to 11...
The quote itself was read by the author of the book in a newspaper while back in Germany on leave from the front. Having his friends deaths basically swept under the rug boiled his piss so much that he never forgot the phrase
This is a complete lie. The English title comes from the ending of the book, where the main character dies at the end of the war, "on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front."
It's very clear that the situation in which he died was uneventful, which makes sense, not everyone dies in some crazy battle. Why would you even bother to make this up🤦♂️
He's actually more right than you realize. The book is originally German. And the original name? Nothing New on the Western Front.
Average Eastern Front Experience: *Joyus Screaming*
Average Western Front Experience: *Thousand Yard Stare*
Pretty insane fucking time. People had lost their damn minds. So glad i missed that...I hope..
the tank crushing the soldier literally caught me so off guard i felt a huge shiver do down my spine
Ok but getting crushed by a tank is hella painful
Wow you realy got the point of the Video...
Fun fact. When the first tanks hits the battlefield. The germans are so scared that some of them surrendered to a disabled tank.
Bullshit

My Relitive Thomas Francis fought on the Western fought. He was gassed by the enemy's but later returned to the war, but sadly, he was shot by a Germans machine gun
Same thing going on in the Ukraine invasion war, both sides saying they're winning but the only ones that know what's up are the soldiers on the Frontline.
At the current State of the war i have to agree
‘Nothing new’ is actually a far better and more honest translation than ‘all quiet’ .
The ending ruined the movie honestly, they changed it for no reason, the original was perfect
not only that, the novel was written a German veteran, the novel was then filmed by a director who hired both German vets and French vets to be as real as possible. the two hands holding onto the bared wire was an actual occurrence that one of the vets seen after a artillery bombardment.
The German title of the film is also
"Nichts Neues im Westen"
Which is the same as
"Nothing new in the west"
It‘s „Im Westen nichts Neues“
The name comes from a novel of the same name which is based on a report from the German army in 1918, which reads the same as the title, and is from the (spoiler alert) mc’s death date in the novel
okay but this movie did the book dirty
The book is better anyways
I am shocked how german newspapers glorify german weapons , today.

I absolutely love this movie, they also added a documentary on Netflix about how it was made, great director and actors.
The original got the messaging right, this movie just seemed more focused on gore, and some of the plot elements were changed to be far more silly. The final battle is completely fake and the way kat dies is so random and hilarious it took me out of the movie
Similar reports appeared in the British press claiming that it had been quiet despite the fact that hundreds may have died that day.
No. The title comes from Paul’s death. He was shot by a sniper. But since there were no big losses of men; the day was reported as “all quiet on the western front”. It’s to show how inconsequential a single loss of life is to a military machine.
The irony is that this movie is no less of a propaganda than the newspaper, funny how the propaganda the people agree with is never called as such 😂
This was probably my favourite WW2 movie. Its a literal nightmare of grim death, large bulks of metal that gun down anything alive, and the horrors of deception

I loved this Book, it still is my first book that I truly enjoy each and every time. My first time reading it was in High School in English. It was a Ride and very few were interested in it. Cuz a little bit of Hell Rises when we Fight.
Funfact: the german titel of the movie is " im westen nichts neues " ="nothing new in the west"
I have no idea why the English titel is different, but since its basically means the same thing it isnt as important i believe.
Maybe because it's the English military equivalent
Could be, no idea

Wow.
It literally said in the book, during the end of the war the only response from the western side of the war was "All Quiet On The Western Front"
The first Version from 1929 is much better then the new film and there the Title makes sense

you sir,, are a fool. while these men contributed to history they did it with their lives. saying it would be an honor to serve alongside these men is like saying it would be an honor to serve alongside nazis because they "contributed to history". they arent people to look up to, they are people who you should feel lucky not to have served with.
Watching this movie really showed me how terrifying the first tanks were to the soldiers

Its also the last line from the book. Taken from the epilog in the form of a military report after the main character is killed.
Early today I was showering and out of no where “all quiet in the western front” came into my head and I immediately asked myself why the films title is that, fast forward to en, and I come across this video ??¿
The MK I tank scene was absolutely 100 percent Brutal
That tank scene was crazy
Great great grandpas battalion had 256 troops at the start of a battle and ended with 25 it’s a scary war
