For the cost of a Deck Builder's Toolkit, you can check out great decklists for Friday Night Magic gameplay like this $20 G/B deck from SBMTG: ua-cam.com/video/zgRGZbrgJpk/v-deo.html
Tolarian Community College Dev is absolutely one of my favorite MTG UA-camrs. Glad to see him getting a shoutout from The Prof. The guy deserves it.
why not build the best possible deck from the toolkit and post the decklist so we can trust your advice that the deck is not able to compete in FNM?
Yes i like this guy!!! His video quality are minimum but the content is great.
nice to see Dev get a shout out from the professor. would be cool if you guys could do a video together.
Igor Della Pietra because a deck with majority one of and two ofs will not be good at FNM. you want good cheap decks check out devs channel ive taken three of his budget decks to 3-0 finishes at FNM. also his dynavolt tower deck i 3-0 everytime i played it. his decks are cheap but powerful.
challenge: watch the entire channel, take a shot each time the proffesor says "many magic the gathering players ask the question"
This kills the viewers
Dreznin Nah.
You'll be sober because it'll be at least 10-15 minutes before you take another shot.
Videos are too long. :
Robo 1234 Or just count the videos with "Is it worth it" in the title?
You get a break when he says Pokémon Trainers
Miramu the average liver takes an hour to process one drink
Hey, prof!
Odds are you won't read this through the 162 comments before it but hey, it's worth a shot.
I'm a huge fan of the toolkit. It helps me figure out some new deck options for standard, sometimes (more on that in a sec). Therefore, I have learned a good number of things about it:
The deck builder's toolkit is a little more complex than I think you give it credit for. The 4 non-booster packs each serve a purpose. The one with the rares in it is the guaranteed pack (semi-randomized has a semi in it for a reason). The abrade, cast out, doomfall, etc. are guaranteed. Those are cards that every deck builder's toolkit has in it.
The evolving wilds pack is something else, however. It is my personal favorite part. Between each of the evolving wilds is a set of 10 cards (5 uncommons and 5 commons) that act as a basis for a deck. In Ixalan, specifically, the 4 are seperated into 1 vamprie deck, 1 merfolk deck, 1 of 2 dinosaur decks (Either RW or RG), and 1 of 2 pirate decks (Either UB or BR). There is also a chance of getting an off-tribe deck, which is UG ramp.
The rest of the packs are just lands.
That, in my opinion, is the great part of the deck builder's toolkit, to new and old players. It shows people how the new set translates into standard! What cards go into what decks and what decks are viable, etc.
My friend just entered Magic the week before prerelease and he got a toolkit last weekend. With a little help from us and the cards from the toolkit and his prerelease pack, he made a really good RW All-in Dinosaur aggro deck for the budget he has.
I think the toolkit's imperfect decks are a good thing: they teach players what aspects of a deck are important and what to improve upon. Nobody learns from a perfect deck nearly as well as they do from a bad one.
So, to answer your question at 8:08, yes. You're not gonna make a perfect deck out of a toolkit, but nobody can learn what a feast is without first knowing what famine is. (Eh, get it?)
Thanks Professor! You, sir, are too good for this world. Cheers my wizard!
Strictly Better MtG So the Prof finally went bananas for your deck techs!
I always thought mtg youtubers should get along lol I am surprised that prof is nice enough to shout out sbmtg though, another lesser known mtg youtuber you can check out is Mtg Muddstah, he makes commander gameplay videos, just like game knights except he started 7 months before game knights (so don't try to say he ripped them off) anyway, I really enjoy his videos and if you like commander you should like him, ps His videos are really short like 10-15 minutes
That's cool you plugged SBMTG, love his decks, and that is where I always start when making a deck.
You both have taught me so much and I've been playing for 20 years! Thanks gentleman for the information. I plan on teaching my dad on the next introduction tourney. 😀
So glad the prof plugged you! That mono-red munitions deck wss myv first ever standard build!
Holy cow! A carnage tyrant in a deckbuilder toolkit booster pack?! That card alone pays for that toolkit box!
shotokankun haha as soon as I saw that mythic I told my girlfriend the same thing
shotokankun not anymore. Dropped in price.
from my knowledge most toolkits have at least one mythic in the packs
It's still WELL above the $20 MSRP of the kit. >.>
Jonathon Smith I just checked the price and it’s still $25-$27 from at least 4 card shops in my area. The price is $25 on mtggoldfish

Why he always says that
Lukas thank god im not the only one who thought that
What a wonderful shoutout to SBMTG. He's really a great guy who makes some entertaining and quality content.
optimusWII incredibly accurate. I love that the professor did that. Increases their credit at the same time.
Amen! Definitely a channel that needs more love.
Ich love Dev. He's amazing
Oh my god hearing the prof mention another favorite mtg youtuber of mine makes me sooo happy
SBMTG is so worthy of a shout out, happy to hear Dev mentioned in your video and his deck techs and always awesome!
I’ve been paying attention to the cards this whole time and you could actually build a decent green ramp deck with the cards he got from this kit
Love dev's decks! I've played a few of his decks and done surprisingly well with them!
He does make some good decks!
Upvote for mentioning Dev, his decks are always interesting!
Yay, nice shout out to SBMTG, his videos are such a great way to learn about the standard meta, and his passion for the game in general is infectious! Love your vids too prof, I always suggest new players to check out your content to get a better understanding of the game :)
Hadn’t realized they’d come out with an Ixalan version of the Deckbuilders toolkit. I think the conclusion was fair. Nice to see the SBMtG shout-out!
Just watched one of your 2015 deck builders toolkit, and wow this video has improved a lot. I really enjoy the videos!
I support the prof's endorsement of Dev from Stricter Better MtG. A very honest & cool MtG content uploader.
My 3 favorites MTG Channels:

Loving the new UHD camera! Great video, as always your opinion is highly valued. Thanks Prof!!
Where's the sleeve for that $30 mythic prof?
gotac88 You mean the $7 jank rare, Carnage Tyrant?
Veikko Elo I don't know where you live but here in Canada the cheapest prize for our online stores is $32 Can
Carnage Tyrant is Currently $19.21 on TCG Player so i dont what the fuck you talking about dude. But hey if you got one and willing to trade for $7 i wont question it.
Word. I read that comment and I began to judge him so hard. Carnage Tyrant was a pretty good pull considering how random it is. It is one of the best cards in Standards too and for good reason.
I feel like I'm always in the vast minority when I say that the Toolkit is the best sealed product for new MTG players. I just wish they only contained boosters from the advertised set. Also the best boxes WOTC makes as well!
Affinity for MTG yeah toolkit boxes are the best.
Agreed!
I got an Amonkhet Toolkit about a month ago, and each of the 4 boosters were from a different set so I had no cards with mechanics that worked well together. Only after I played at the Ixalan launch sealed tournament did I have enough cards from a single set to properly get started.
Yeah I've always been of the opinion that they should be released with the second set of a block and give you 2 boosters from each. Cos at the moment the 100 fixed cards you get with the pack end up being a mix of the most mediocre commons/uncommons from 3-4 disjointed sets. Whereas if they just waited to the second set you'd at least have mediocre cards that synergise properly and if you've got 4 boosters from the same block you're 2/3 of the way to a pre-release pack anyway. This is especially the case for a tribal set like Ixalan given that tribal synergies from it don't really work with Amonkhet/Kaladesh whereas a load of mediocre tribal cards together can at least do something
when I started I got an intro deck and found out from friends it was really bad. This made me mad because I thoght it would at least allow me to play thus the name intro deck. I came to find out the only Prebuilt product that was even close to being playable at a Friday Night Magic were event decks and they do not even make those anymore.
I like the fact that they contain older boosters as well
Hey prof, just wanted to say thanks. I started playing magic 8 years ago, and set it down about 3 years ago. Picked it back up when i stumbled onto your channel. I now have a circle of friends at work i play activity with, and am building a red green build of your infect concept for modern, and am enjoying being a much better deck builder and player thanks to you!
Found this reallu useful I wanna get further into magic, Im just beginning and this really helped me!you just earned a new subscriber! Thanks alot
I was at Target, and my school has a Magic club that I want to join, so I picked one up (2 days ago), I finished organizing it, am gonna build a deck, and hopefully be able to play at a gamestores before school, just need to learn a bit more, your really helpful with the learning curve
Thanks Tolarian I am diving into MTG. Got this toolkit And a few boosters. I sleeved them by color which was probably a bad idea because I don't what to sleeve the mix color cards by.
Also did a prerelease kit for the next upcoming expansion
Your channel is where i go every single time I think about buying a product for my cards, and for just general guidance with this stuff. Don't know what i'd do without you prof.
Dude been watching your for 2 years now :D and i remember the first toolkit video, this was just as nice, thank you :)
The way Tolarian Community College does the outro reminds me of PBS. TCC is now the PBS of MTG content production, congrats Professor.
Hey prof, there's an audio hiccup at 13:00.
Great video nonetheless though! ♡
You're pretty spot on. I used the merfolk I got to bolster my current deck, same with the white/black vampire cards. I liked the dinosaurs but mainly for the aesthetic
Dev deserves all the shout outs, good mention professor
Great video, as always. Just discovered SBMtG this week myself. Another great info source in this very enjoyable community.
Since you mentioned them, I wanted to say that I got a set of the Rookie decks a little while back and had some games with my brother and a friend with them. It was scary going in because I had the most recent experience with one entire hour of Duels playtime under my belt, my brother was astounded that the card backs are the same as they were in Ice Age, and my friend had never even heard of MTG before. We taught her the flow of the turn with the aid of the inserts, taught her about the different kinds spells from memory, and had a jolly good time of things!
I had yet to watch the video you made on how to go about teaching friends to play Magic, but I think my brother and I would have done ya proud. We advised her on better times and targets for Unsummon, how to assign damage in such a way as to maximize her creatures' effectiveness, and even ended up letting her win. Not because we had the means to stop her but chose not to, but because we all took care to split damage between the three of us so nobody was getting ganged up on and she ended up with too many flyers to deal with.
Of the lot, Red was the most inconsistent. Blue and Green featured 4 of each card it included, Black and White had mostly 4 with a couple of 3s and 2s, but Red was entirely 3s and 2s and none of the 4s were particularly powerful relative to the other decks. I know each deck is made with what they have on hand and they can't guarantee a deck with specific contents, but I was hoping each would be equally consistent.
As a teaching tool and as a kitchen table funsies product, they were great! Certainly better than buying an equivalent cost in packs and hoping to stumble into something decent, thanks to each deck having a theme it was built around. The cases are greatly appreciated since we have a lot of board and card games to keep track of, and hard plastic defends against our cat's attempts at murder much better than thin cardboard. I do think a third insert explaining the card types would be a fantastic addition, but our little group didn't happen to need it.
I bought an Ixalan bundle as my introduction to MTG, I used some of the cards and bought singles to build the SBMTG B/W Vampires deck mention here. It taught me how to think when building a deck, and won a few games at FNM. I hope other newbies see this video and take the same approach. Thanks for the great content.
$19.99 cost- pulls a $27 card
Robert Fryer Won't be that high for many more days.
Veikko Elo I hope so!! I want a playset of these!!
The only one in the set though.
Nice shout out to Dev
Professor, I really enjoy your channel and the content on all your videos!! Keep up the amazing work! =]
I love seeing mtg content creators not only helping each other out but also working together to make this community what it is, thank you for being here for all of us
The sheer fact that you can get just about all the dual lands you could need makes me want one of these
I bought a toolkit in 2010 when I started playing with some high school friends. I had only had bought a box of eldrazi boosters and an intro pack at the time. This gave me the extra lands I needed to make something outside of just the red/green deck I bought as well as some of the important commons and uncommons in the core set. Casually getting back into magic now, I still use the box it all came in.
I also think that getting only a few cards, not a playset, that are the good tools are helpful for a new player due to exposure. First, it shows some options which helps if you may not have friends who play Magic or something. Next, if they know they can put multiple of those cards in a deck (I remember when I just started, I probably would have assumed it was more similar to commander, where you can only have one of each) it helps give a little push to seek out singles. Not all new players might go along with it, but the community helpful, giving pointers to new players. It's a way to learn what I've learned, that it's difficult to go anywhere in this game alone (outside of playing, of course), so make some friends and the level of fun will rocket up exponentially. It provides help and a lot of opportunity for casual games to learn from.
Great video. Fair analysis, supporting the community and creators like Dev, provides many alternatives for whatever people are looking for. Love it.
I pulled a foil Chandra, Vraska, cataclysmic gearhulk and a foil Search for Azcanta, among a bunch of other cool stuff from a toolkit this week. Pretty happy with it, given I'd started playing MTG the day before. :p
When me and my friends first started playing last years we all bought Deck builders toolkits and it was awesome. There was four of us and we were all on the same level. Would recommend for kitchen table players.
Quite a few standard playables in the stack. I saw blossoming defence, Abrade, walk the plank and supreme will, among others
Something about this video makes me smile. You just seem so happy in this one and I love it
Awesome plug for SBMTG. I love them and many other channels that come up with $30 or less standard and modern decks.
As for the tool kits, I've thought of picking some up for my kids to put them in a spot to build on their own.
Just started collecting and built my first deck "mountains and plains" using the Hualti, Dinosaur Knight planeswalker Deck. I purchased 2 Ixalan booster packs with the Planeswalker deck and made my first deck. Played it for first time today and it's so much fun. I hope to stay into MTG for awhile
Awesome job Professor! Found a solution to the problem! Thanks!
Excellent annalasys as always Prof! You are my hero!
This channel is life. None other like it. Keep on enlightening us, professor. :)
11:24 That's exactly me, after 10 years i'm a returing player although i haven't bought a single card just yet. I was totally lost because there are no more theme decks. Back then, me and my friends used to buy them to sorf of stablish a THEME to go on, and slowly strenghten it by trading or buying singles or booster packs. It was a blast and pretty straight forward.
Fisting the box ! Haha just started mtg a week ago loving your channel
I love your channel so much! I've been playing Strictly Better MTG's U/G Merfolk budget deck lately online and win or lose, it never fails to be a fun game.
Totally agree professor, I always direct new players towards one of the recent budget decks from SBMTG
I love it when he does the awkward throwing thing to show how it doesent come out.
While you left in a noticeable repeat near the end of your conclusion, I think it's still fine and enjoy your analysis and recommendations. Also, that toolkit at least gave that new player a valuable way to gain some tools with the Tyrant :)
I started playing MTG in this set and I bought one of these! I hold this set near and dear to me since it was my first. In fact I bought this box after watching this video years ago! Ah sweet memories :)
Man, Dev helped me so much when i came back to magic in AER. I made his pummeler list and got some glorious victories :D
One of my local stores runs a DBTK event once a month. You come in, buy a Tool Kit, get 45 minutes to make a deck from said Tool Kit and play a single elimination tournament. The winner gets a few prizes that make it worth it, in my opinion. Even 2nd and 3rd place get some stuff, if more than 12 people enter the event. My wife and I participate regularly and it's always good fun. I would highly recommend going if your local store does this.
This video really helped me choose to get a deck builder tool kit or an Ikorea bundle (sorry if I spelt that wrong)
Nice!!Great shout out for SBMTG love him been buying his lists for over a year!!
Prof since Core 2019, the toolkits have been fixed, no randomization.
The planeswalker decks and intro decks have always been good to me as well. I got a lilly of the dark realms, a growing rites of Itlomac, and several other high value items from the packs that come with. Don't know if thats just luck, but I've never lost money just buying the decks and i always net something.
Love the shout-out to Dev; he's a great UA-camr who puts out fun lists at every budget level. Thanks, Prof!
Also as a small side note the 5 "rare cards" from the toolkit are also found in the free welcome decks that are found at most local game stores.
I really like the lid on this box. I got a huge box of cards for Christmas and recently ended up dropping my entire collection, still haven't gotten around to reorganizing.
I used a starter pack and a few cards from the new Jace deck and went 4/7 for my first few games ever, and that was a Friday Magic Night.
I'd consider that pretty good
Woohoo! Giving Dev some love is awesome. He is such a great personality on UA-cam. TCC and SBMTG are both great resources!
I still have my Ixalan toolkit box that I use for my land box! My first introduction to magic (along with an Ixalan fat pack). I never knew it could fit a deck box, my mind would have been blown at the time lol
I'm a new player and just want to say your videos are both entertaining and very helpful:)
Throwing SBMTG some love! Nice!
great review, thank you!
I bought a toolkit back when I started playing during dragons/khans of Tarkir. Made an Izzet deck first, with the help of a friend who had been playing for a decade, then made a Selesnya deck when I explored the other cards and found a dramoka and Ajani in it.
I bought this pack as I have only started in the last few months and was outstanding lucky and pulled a Chromatic Lantern Masterpiece out of one of the boosters. That has paid for at least a few good decks.
Showed Dev some love, I'll show it back 👍... SBMtG might be a little "long winded" when explaining his decks, but he DOES give you as much info about why each card is included into his builds (and also why he included X amount into them)
Look at that Tanuki figurine in the background! Love it
Though you do have quite the interesting character, you make amazing and useful content. Keep it up!
Also, the paper sleeve that fits over the box adds an additional thing keeping it closed. With that, the box only opens if someone wants it to be opened. (They... still have the sleeve right? I know in Amonkhet it still did)
It should be noted re. The semi random aspect that the first pack of cards that prof opened after the "iconic rares" are not random. These will be identical in every toolkit (so you are guaranteed to get that abrade, uncharted territories etc.) The semi-random aspect relates to the cards between the evolving wilds. These are divided into ~8 themed groups of which you will get a random 4 of those possible 8 groups. The cards in each group are fixed so if someone else's toolkit happened to have the treasure, vampires, dinosaurs and merfolk groups those would be the exact same cards that prof got. The only truly random aspect is what comes in the boosters
Hi Professor; What would be the best way to buy cards in order to complete a collection (Set) while still retaining value towards Modern or Standard FNM?
You have a video for just about every question i ever have for this game.
Meanwhile... Me (A Competitive Yugioh): *_“I’M WAAAAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE...”_*
The M15 Toolkit was the first product i ever got, not only did it get me addicted but i still use it today as my Limited Box; sleeves, land, dice etc. And it's pretty much fine. Just keep the sleeve the box it comes in and it will never come open and the box will last even longer.
I'm fairly new to MTG but I have a binder to sort my cards I kept the green deck builders tool kit box for when I have multiple decks
*NOTE* ... imo some things were missing from this review ! ...
1. The stack of cards that have the evolving wilds in them are NOT random, this is a stack with (what i would call:) a suggested start for a deck. SO this toolbox holds 4 different 'semi-pre-constructed starter decks', and you would use the cards from the actual pile of semi random cards (with the rares) and the 4 boosters, to add to these suggestions (here we saw: "merfolk, pirates, vampires & dinos").
2. Then when it comes to starting off with magic, when more then often you end up with budget decks, the toolbox holds some budget duals and the evolving wilds (if you check Dev's budget lists these are almost always in there, though noted will be that replacing the tapped dual with non-budget lands will be the likely first place for upgrades). And there are plenty a competitive decks that see a use for Evolving Wilds !
3. Would also like to mention that, as a starting player you will likely want to go to pre-releases, and having your own (pre-sleeved) basic lands to take to this event is something i personally value pretty high. And lets face it, every deck will have some basic lands.
4. Imo. the toolbox seems to be designed to point new players towards the various synergies that are to be achieved when building a deck, which is likely also why the aforementioned 'deck-suggestions' are in the kit.
5. I think that if you were to combine the cards from a deck-builders toolkit, and actually understood the packaged lesson within it, and were to attend your first draft (using the (pre-sleeved) basic lands to save yourself some deckbuilding time). You could end up with a solid base for a fairly nice budget deck (yes you would likely still need to buy some singles, but at least you have a base collection to add cards to).
End-closing, and this was in this video, i still think that for a beginning (or returning player that sold his/her collection) the toolkit is packed with value (mainly the lands and evolving wilds), seeing that as a 'budget player' (don't think i classify as starting anymore) i find myself grabbing these elements of these toolboxes every time i build a deck.
So glad you mentioned SBMTG, he has some very well constructed budget decks
I still carry around my 2014 toolkit box with a commander deck and a couple 60 card deck boxes. I also bought a Shadows of Innistrad one just because. I would definitely recommend the Ixalan one if someone thinks they will like it.
Great video professor!
Honestly I love picking these up. Great for new casuals like me imo to help me learn how to build a deck pretty easily which means when I get to spending more money on a more serious deck I will waste less money in duds or mechanics I'm not familiar with and also learning about synergy etc
what i used to do for my old lgs was go into the set boxes and build decks for newbies the price hit around $20 and the way we described it was it could put in a good match but modification would make it better
Hi Professor. I was wondering if you were going to review the Planeswalker decks too?
This is so inviting! Magic is pretty daunting from a newcomers perspective and this explained how to get started really well, multiple ways too! Thanks Professor!
Kinda a weird comment... but I LOVE that purple on the walls!! Keep up the awesome content!
Those cards looked about identical to the ones from my box (booster packs aside). That said, a casual 40 card deck, perhaps OK to play against a sealed deck from a prerelease weekend?
So, if i buy some booster packs, and mix it with this toolkit, can i solve competitive deck ??? :D
Love that shoutout to SBMTG! The most fun $20 can buy in standard for sure!
I love the boxes. I find them much better than bundle boxes whose joints give out after about a year. I wish bundles had this style of box too!
You are a pleasant, polite gentleman and I appreciate you!
I love SBMTG great to see you tubers supporting each other in a very positive light
I don't know if you can qualify the boosters as being at their full value. Being from random sets, you cannot draft with them
