      The Pinup Companion I thought hardly anyone else did this as well as me, I'm so glad to know that someone as fashionable as you does it as well (my "fashion sense" is very messy and makes me look like a stereotypical grandma)

    • @Lunathiel_
      @Lunathiel_ 7 років тому +15

      I do it too! Also with these long-cut shirts and 60's-like tunics which everybody was digging a few years ago. Mostly cause the thrift stores are full of them now, when shorter tops are back and fashionable again. So when I love the pattern, the sleeves, the collar - I just take it and wear it. Or I resew them, if I'm not too lazy for that (and believe me, 9 for 10 times I am :'D).

      Absolutetly! You have to keep in mind though that those items are made to fit asian women, so they are probably super short on most western people (just fyi if anyone wants to buy from that brand).

    Dresses these days don't have any shape, just big rectangles sewed on each other (most of the time with a belt). Modern fashion is so lazy! Oh and if you have any hips or booty these type of dresses don't fit!

      @rachelmaksy  7 років тому +84

    • @NaSaDaism
      @NaSaDaism 7 років тому +24

      I feel this comment so much.
      With bigger hips, I feel like everything I get that looks good (as far as shape/flare) has a stiffer fabric, so it holds its own better, or it's a LOT of fabric that's been gathered or pleated. OTL
      Both of which make things warmer to wear, and our summers here are NOT friendly with that.

    • @Rachel-fi4sc
      @Rachel-fi4sc Рік тому +1

      I'm very late, but a well-fitted corset is your best friend - naturally strapless and supports the weight of the bust so much better than modern bras! They can be difficult to hide under tight modern clothes, but wearing an extra camisole over it and/or wearing either more tailored and very loose tops can work.

      @rachelmaksy  7 років тому +2

      Oh I totally am the same way, the mass-produced, cheaper websites always make me weary but these were actually really good quality. And it's cool, at least with SheIn, each item usually has photos and reviews from people and they're pretty honest about if it feels cheaply made or not

  • @imagismus
    @imagismus 7 років тому

    True. What I do is just frantically looking for modern pieces (that are not 50 euros each), like puffed-shouldered blouses and dresses, knee-length skirts and oxfords, as I would define my everyday style as "late-30's-early-40's", adding accessories that belonged to my grandmother, like pearls and clip-on earrings. The rest is just the makeup, and my victory rolls always in place :9

    It's such a simple 'hack' but it changes the entire look. I love it. I'm going to try this for sure. It's also cheaper than buying multiple dresses. You can mix and match multiple tops with skirts.You only need 1 skirt really, if your budget it tight.. 2 or 3 tops and voila, you have '3 dresses'

    So this has given me the confidence to try Shein. I’d seen a lot of ads on Facebook for it, but wasn’t sure if it was one of those scam companies. But after this video and the very nice pieces you got sent, I had a look at other reviews, and it seems they’re legit!
    Which is awesome, because they have a TON of vintage inspired pieces on their site. Just so much vintage inspired! Also, they go up to a pretty large size, which is fantastic. I’ve had to be very disappointed when following other people’s recommendations for clothing, only to find that the only thing they’d sell that would fit is is maybe a brooch.
    And like, one of the reasons I got into dressing vintage to begin with is how flattering it is on a fuller figure. So it’s always nice to find companies that actually sell my size.

    I don't have any actual vintage clothes (I'm extra curvy sized so practically impossible to find) so I add vintage or vintage inspired accessories to classic clothes. Adding a little sweater with a broach and a hair flower definitely gives a vintage vibe. And can't forget the red lips!

    Im 13 and I absolutely love the vintage style! However I'm not sure whether im too young for the style and if it might look different or strange on me. Its also really hard to find any sort of vintage clothing where i live. Do you think I should have a go at the style or should I wait a little longer?

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  7 років тому +4

      Aww I think you should do whatever makes you happy! It might feel strange at first but pretty soon it'll become your kinda-trademark! You could always stick to the more casual vintage style too, with just simple blouses and skirts! And then work your way to the more "eccentric" dresses and looks once you're comfortable enough! ❤️

      Julia Capone I think mine just might be polyester! I would avoid crinoline or tulle (at least personally) because those can be kinda uncomfortable. I like my petticoat to feel like a soft blanket or pillow 😂❤️

    Actually I think it's a very good idea to encourage people to buy second hand pieces of clothe on etsy or thrift shops because the brands you show here produce their clothe in horrible human and environnemental conditions so in my opinion that's a pity you promote them in this video :/

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  7 років тому +6

      True, and for the most part I thrift and buy vintage whenever I buy clothes. But for some people it's hard for them to afford vintage or don't have access to good thrifting opportunities, so I wanted to show it's not necessary to have the look of vintage. The ethical side does suck, but for some it's their only viable option for clothing.

    • @amywambsganss2061

      It’s hard if you are a little larger as it is hard to find vintage clothes that fit you. Or even able to find a place locally that has vintage clothes. My thrift store vintage is the 1990s.

    Fabulous ideas, thank you! Great idea about using dresses as tops! Why have I not thought of that one?! :) Some of the better things I learned in my long lost youth was to knit and sew, but even if you don't really sew or knit, my advice would be to get a big haberdashery kit of ribbons, beads, sequins - any gorgeous trims you're drawn to (I'm a magpie, I swear! lol) and customise your regular clothing. It's amazing how retro something can look with bows, beads and ric-rac plonked onto it! Cute outfits, btw. I love that blue striped off-the-shoulder number! x

      You are so very welcome! I have used youtube for longer and more often than I am comfortable admitting to most people, but I am being honest when I say that your personality and your talent for both styling and filming are out of this world! WIthin minutes of watching the first video I felt as if we were long time companions. You make me laugh and inspire me to challenge myself with my style. I've always been obsessed with fashion but in recent years I've been on a journey of self discovery and I've become very environmentally conscious so I've made the choice to stop shopping and supporting clothing companies that don't align with my ethical views. Watching your videos has really got me thinking about that part of myself that I have been missing. The way we dress is about so much more than an instagram photo or being on trend. I love what you said about your vintage style saying so much more about who you are than the way you used to dress. Vintage style is timeless, and shopping at the thrift store or buying actual vintage pieces is right on target with the way I choose to live my life. So thank you for that! Lol this was the longest comment I have ever left on a video, I usually don't comment at all. I can't stand the way people treat each other these days. I just really really like you! If we ever meet in person I know we will share many laughs! Now I'm gonna continue binging on your channel

      I still buy some here and there when it's a better financial decision. I'd say 90% of the clothing I purchase is either thrifter or ethically sourced/salvaged. And I am very proud of that! You should be proud of yourself too, using the platform you have to spread positive lifestyle choices, and that includes choosing to be happy and confident with who you are. You are a radiant women and whether or not you made this channel to help anyone else with their self esteem you are doing it. You come across so genuine, it is truly refreshing. P.S. I bought a pair of knee high lace up boots after seeing how cute you style them!
