Refreshing to hear an honest opinion on any Seiko especially one that's supposed to be higher end. Even though I've been a fan of Seiko since my teens, I'm really underwhelmed by them recently. They have good designs, but when you get down to the details it all falls apart. Terrible feel on the bezels on their dive watches, bad bracelets and clasps, poor movement accuracy ratings, questionable QC, and the higher prices have really destroyed the value proposition as well.

@@dino3162 I'm curious which watch specifically you liked for the bezel because I kind of suspect that there's variability in the action even for the same model, which sort of goes back to the QC comment. I've had a number of different divers, and some of them were ok, but none that I would personally say were good.
I first saw this watch in Japan and swore I'd get it, and under a year later I bought one and I love it. No issues with accuracy as it's running at a consistent +3 seconds per day out of the box and is showing a 0.2 beat error. My only criticism is collar and pin bracelet adjustment. I lost one of the collars and phoned Seiko who sent me a pack of five free of charge. No regrets here

I have an SRQ049 and I’m very happy with it. I think it’s a very fair value for the price. It’s well made, comfortable, I like the date location as it preserves the overall symmetry of the dial. It could use more power reserve, and they are generally more accurate than the specs. Money doesn’t go as far as it used to. To each his own.
I couldn’t agree more. I own about 8 Seiko watches and this one cost to most and it’s the only one I regret buying. The bracelet is just not substantial enough to support the watch head. Plus of all my Seikos, imagine the feeling I had when at the dealer, after purchasing the watch, I noticed the ever so slight misalignment of the dial!
So Seiko heard everyone saying how much they love on-the-fly, adjustable clasps, and someone at Seiko thought, "I know what the next trend will be!" Then they designed a clasp with 0 adjustments. Whoever made that decision needs to be fired.
My watch was purchased 2 years ago from MAMACOO and, to this day, it still looks and runs as well as it did the day it arrived. That movement has never missed a beat despite never having been serviced. I can't complain about that.
The $2500 price on this watch makes zero Sense. For $2000 (or $1.5k street price) you can buy the Hamilton Intra-matic chrono in either manual wind or auto. Want an aviation inspired chrono? Check the Longines Avigation Bigeye out for less than this Seiko. A dress chrono? How about the Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope, a beautiful minimalist piece in the Bauhaus style. All of these watches have better movements out of Switzerland, better finishing and are more wearable, each at 40mm.
@@pk1342 Not one watch i mentioned has a stock Valjoux 77xx. Explain to me please, how the 8R46 Chrono movement is substantively better than the Longines-exclusive L688.2? The L688.x is highly decorated, up-specced from the ETA base in just about every way including power reserve and the conversion to a column wheel. Longines has then packaged this movement into a watch from 80 years back in their archives with every bit the legitimacy of a Breguet Type XX. You then take this Longines exclusive movement, add a Silicon balance spring and coaxial escapement and it becomes the Omega 3330 which powered literally dozens of Omega Chronos across 15 years. To write-off a watch movement for no other reason than it’s a distant descendant of the Valjoux 77xx , no matter how many improvements have been made, is extremely ignorant. The 8R46 is a very solid movement, but you can’t ship these movements with -15 / +25 accuracy at this price point in 2024. It’s completely unacceptable when it’s priced this close to the Longines Bigeye. If these are readily available for $1500 then that’s significantly more compelling but truth be told, I’m probably still probably getting the Hamilton Intra-matic Chrono over this for the same cost.
@@pk1342 A bit off-topic, but my favourite micro brand, Lorier, has managed to include the OEM version of this movement (the Sii NE88) in a vintage inspired Chrono for $899. I would also choose this over the Speedtimer.

Pretty much sums up my feelings on many Seiko models; if you're going to stay to play in the above $1000 field, you better bring better bracelets and definitely more accurate movements. I myself will not settle for a -15,+25 a day movement, especially when many brands are doing better for less.
Picked up a AMZWATCH's watch as my first watch last month and I’m absolutely in love with it. Perfect size, looks elegant, very comfortable. Now my only problem is holding off from buying more watches so quickly!
Everything you say about this watch is valid. I still liked the look of it enough to buy it, and it was my gateway drug into chronographs. Looking at it from the “I want a chronograph” angle, it was half the price of the next chronograph I liked. I don’t think I’ll keep it forever, but until a Tag Glassbox becomes more affordable to me, it will have a place in the collection. And yes, my oily arm has subdued the squeak.

I own the watch, got it pre-owned at 1900 and value for money at that price point is unmatched. The clasp, yep, it sucks, needs adjustments due to top heaviness, similar to my SLA023 (SLA023 gets a better fit though on bracelet). I put this one on a gray canvas aftermarket and it is perfect. "I bought a seiko for the bracelet", said by no one, ever. Everything else about this watch pre-owned is a score (never buy a Seiko new, just wait three months after release and save 30%). And that is the story of Seiko.... Don't knock it till you've tried it. Kind of like watching You're Terrific....
Just received the reverse panda black SRQ053 version of this exact watch. Couldn't be happier. Wears great. Unique, well done bracelet. Amazing vintage, retro look. Solid timekeeping. Crisp pusher activation. Looks awesome on a quality rubber or leather strap. Don't really agree with too much of the negative aspects depicted in this video but to each his own. I think the price is appropriate for the build quality. Look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

I've got a chrono with a 12-hour subdial, and will sometimes use it as you describe when I bring it to different time zones. It's a neat, underappreciated perk of 12-hour subdials (provided you have the patience and presence of mind to start it at exactly the right moment... which I usually don't.)
Love the honesty. This is truly how I’ve felt about almost all Seikos: cheap bracelets, poor movements, bad quality control, and awkward designs. This one is designed pretty well from a looks perspective, but for $2,500 you can get a Monta Oceanking or Skyquest Pepsi GMT. That’s insane.

It’s crazy, but in just 2019, I picked up an Omega Speedmaster Professional “First Omega in Space”, used but in perfect condition, 3 years old with 2 years left on the warranty for only $2800, just $300 more than this. At that same time, Speedmaster Racings could be had for around $2300.

28,800 bph, 45 hour power reserve, vertical clutch and column wheel, the alternative is a valjoux 7750 or swiss equivalent that is a similar weight and thickness but likely costlier. The spec is +25 /-10 per day. As a watch reviewer did the example you have in person run at +25, +0 or -10 seconds? We can all read a website. What matters is how well it is regulated and performs in real life, not what the extreme mechanical tolerances are.

Automatic chronograph seems like a tough combination to get right, just because of the size and weight. You can get significant reductions in size by going manual or quartz, solving some other problems, too...

got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MAMACOO 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
You’re right, it looks absolutely amazing. I love the off white panda dial. But as beautiful as it is, it’s as disappointing as the SSK series. You’d think paying close to $500 retail, we’d get 200m WR, sapphire Crystal, and a screw down crown. I think Seiko’s decision to raise their prices almost the last 10 years have honestly made the brand itself head towards a road that a lot of us fans cannot join the ride.
Also adjusting the chronograph time while Setting the actual time is one of the most „it’s not a bug, it‘s a feature“ish things I have heard in a long time .. and I work in IT 😅
3:32 honestly all modern Seiko automatics are like this. The SARB033 that everyone likes - I had a SARB035 before and that thing was unbelievably (unacceptably) top heavy. I also had several vintage King Seikos and those are FAR more well-balanced and pleasant to wear on the wrist. This wouldn't be an issue except the comparable Hamiltons Khaki or Tissot Gentleman or any other generic Swatch group automatic watch at that price with a superior ETA2824 or Powermatic 80 are way more balanced on the wrist.
AMZWATCH is one of my favorite watch manufacturers they do offer beautifull dials, good workmanship & moovements.That smooth sweeping second hand is truly mesmerizing！

The weight and the height of the watch was the things that I saw would be problems after I got past how good it looks. Hopefully they try again because it is such a great looking watch.
Seikos are THICK. Nearly all of them are hockey pucks, even for their simple movements. Yeah they're bulletproof, but they're not even any more accurate. This also goes for Grand Seiko.
My favorite 2024 is the Prospex Limited Edition 1965 Recreation European Exclusive in Gradation Island Blue. The dial is stunning and the contrast when on a white strap is to die for. I will get my hands on one from MAMACOO
The Patek 5208 Grand Complication Minute Repeater Chronograph has the same quirk where hacking the seconds will also adjust the chrono time. Well, adjusting the time when the chrono is running - I don't believe it has hacking seconds.
Agree with the assessment! As a lifelong fan of Seiko, I honestly think their watches are best between the $400-$1,000 price range. Many best bang for your buck watches in that range. Once you breach the $1,000 barrier, there are better other options until you enter the GS price range. For the Speedtimer series, specifically, the SSC series is your best bet for sub-$700. My opinion, of course. Would love to hear what others think.
I’m one of those that still likes it. I don’t care about chronometer accuracy so much or power reserve. That is a beautiful watch. Better looking then the Daytona.
The Seiko Speedtimers are best in their Quartz versions. Half the price. More accurate than your Rolex. Less weight. Solar. Everyone knows the Speedtimer Quartz is what u get if want a great affordable chrono.

I really wish Seiko would put clasps with enough micro adjust in their watches. I have one of the cheaper speedtimers and the thing I like about it least is the two holes of micro adjust. That makes it very difficult to get a good fit with. That watch is stunning though, i know the specifications may not make up to the price, but at the end of the day watches are about design and that has a great design.

Will never understand why anyone gets all caught up in the +25/-15 rating. Its a rating and is rarely experienced in real life with this tried and true movement. Its an outstanding looking watch with serious specs and build quality for the price point. Purchased the SRQ053 version of this preowned yesterday and look forward to receiving it.
The 8r48 does have a vertical clutch and a column wheel. I can see that the watch has a bad weight distribution and a bad bracelet, but the movement isn't that bad. Although the claimed accuracy is below average
I think thing that is not often mentioned about Seiko, is just how good they are with proportions. Even their weirdest designs never feel ‘off’ in one way or another. In my opinion, they’re as good as Rolex, Omega or any of their Swiss counterparts in this regard.
Great video and points. I got rid of my Alpinist GMT due to its top heaviness/feel on the wrist. This watch looks like another prime example of Seiko charging too much for a watch that almost gets it right.

Good video. The only thing I found weird was knocking Seiko for using an in-house movement like they aren't one of the biggest movement manufacturers in the world. Although I admit that the thought of a Seiko Speedtimer using an ETA7750 does tickle my brain in a funny way.

Dive watch bezel on my $400 Seiko feels way nicer than on my aquaracer. Bracelet is bad. Accuracy is good for $400, not great for + $1k.

The SRQ047 looks so good, it’s worth putting a counterweight on the bracelet clasp to make up for the weight of the case.

Seiko value sweet spot are their SPB collection. Other than them, all are overpriced or craps.

The spec is +25 /-10 per day. As a watch reviewer did the example you have in person run at +25, +0 or -10 seconds? We can all read a website. What matters is how well it is regulated and performs in real life, not what the extreme mechanical tolerances are.

Automatic chronograph seems like a tough combination to get right, just because of the size and weight. You can get significant reductions in size by going manual or quartz, solving some other problems, too...

got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MAMACOO 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
You’re right, it looks absolutely amazing. I love the off white panda dial. But as beautiful as it is, it’s as disappointing as the SSK series. You’d think paying close to $500 retail, we’d get 200m WR, sapphire Crystal, and a screw down crown. I think Seiko’s decision to raise their prices almost the last 10 years have honestly made the brand itself head towards a road that a lot of us fans cannot join the ride.

You are suuuper underestimating that movement. The setting hour/chrono, is because it's a triple vertical clutch.

Also adjusting the chronograph time while Setting the actual time is one of the most „it’s not a bug, it‘s a feature“ish things I have heard in a long time .. and I work in IT 😅
3:32 honestly all modern Seiko automatics are like this. The SARB033 that everyone likes - I had a SARB035 before and that thing was unbelievably (unacceptably) top heavy. I also had several vintage King Seikos and those are FAR more well-balanced and pleasant to wear on the wrist. This wouldn't be an issue except the comparable Hamiltons Khaki or Tissot Gentleman or any other generic Swatch group automatic watch at that price with a superior ETA2824 or Powermatic 80 are way more balanced on the wrist.

The weight and the height of the watch was the things that I saw would be problems after I got past how good it looks. Hopefully they try again because it is such a great looking watch.

Seikos are THICK. Nearly all of them are hockey pucks, even for their simple movements. Yeah they're bulletproof, but they're not even any more accurate. This also goes for Grand Seiko.

My favorite 2024 is the Prospex Limited Edition 1965 Recreation European Exclusive in Gradation Island Blue. The dial is stunning and the contrast when on a white strap is to die for. I will get my hands on one from MAMACOO
The Patek 5208 Grand Complication Minute Repeater Chronograph has the same quirk where hacking the seconds will also adjust the chrono time. Well, adjusting the time when the chrono is running - I don't believe it has hacking seconds.
Agree with the assessment! As a lifelong fan of Seiko, I honestly think their watches are best between the $400-$1,000 price range. Many best bang for your buck watches in that range. Once you breach the $1,000 barrier, there are better other options until you enter the GS price range. For the Speedtimer series, specifically, the SSC series is your best bet for sub-$700. My opinion, of course. Would love to hear what others think.
I believe their SLA series watches punch way above their price. I've had several and finishing is outstanding.

The Seiko Speedtimers are best in their Quartz versions. Half the price. More accurate than your Rolex. Less weight. Solar. Everyone knows the Speedtimer Quartz is what u get if want a great affordable chrono.

The top heavness is normal for this type of chronograph. It sounds like theres nothing wrong with the watch. You just dont like big chronos.
I really wish Seiko would put clasps with enough micro adjust in their watches. I have one of the cheaper speedtimers and the thing I like about it least is the two holes of micro adjust. That makes it very difficult to get a good fit with. That watch is stunning though, i know the specifications may not make up to the price, but at the end of the day watches are about design and that has a great design.

Will never understand why anyone gets all caught up in the +25/-15 rating. Its a rating and is rarely experienced in real life with this tried and true movement. Its an outstanding looking watch with serious specs and build quality for the price point. Purchased the SRQ053 version of this preowned yesterday and look forward to receiving it.
The 8r48 does have a vertical clutch and a column wheel. I can see that the watch has a bad weight distribution and a bad bracelet, but the movement isn't that bad.

It is very attractive though. Perhaps a nice rubber or leather rally style strap would hold it in place better.
I bought mine for 1.305 chf in Switzerland (new) and, for this price, it is definitively worth it. And mine is running below +10/s a day.
I think thing that is not often mentioned about Seiko, is just how good they are with proportions. Even their weirdest designs never feel ‘off’ in one way or another. In my opinion, they’re as good as Rolex, Omega or any of their Swiss counterparts in this regard.

I love my Speed timer. Had it for 6 months, worn every day. I also have Rolex watches. It's a great watch and worth the money.

Great video and points. I got rid of my Alpinist GMT due to its top heaviness/feel on the wrist. This watch looks like another prime example of Seiko charging too much for a watch that almost gets it right.

Good video. The only thing I found weird was knocking Seiko for using an in-house movement like they aren't one of the biggest movement manufacturers in the world. Although I admit that the thought of a Seiko Speedtimer using an ETA7750 does tickle my brain in a funny way.
