    It is so much easier to use millimetres than inches and fractions of an inch.

    • @AbroadReachTravel

      YUP! We would agree but we are American and all of our measuring tapes are in inches. And buying materials runs in inches too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      @@AbroadReachTravel The funny thing is, if I buy a TV I still think in inches for the screen size. If I think of someone's height, I think in feet and inches!

    Lap sealant will leak over time. You are better to use butyl tape as a second layer of defence

    • @AbroadReachTravel
      @AbroadReachTravel  3 роки тому +1

      If we did it again we would use butyl tape for sure. We don’t have any leaks but we are big fans of butyl tape!

    I suggest install 2 to 3. For a large 1 Vent Fan not enough if you have 2 pax in the van. Stuffy & hot

      I would agree with that if you can manage it! We didn’t have space on the roof with our solar panels but I think it’s a great idea if you can make it work!

    The only bad is, undercover parking that allows a limited height for example 2.1 m max. A slide window is another option for ventilation, save they're expensive

    But how did you manage to fit the fan trim? Did you need to cut it? You barely had 3 inches of thickness on the roof with insulation. The fan trip is like 8 inches high

    • @AbroadReachTravel
      @AbroadReachTravel  Місяць тому

      Yes. We trimmed height down with a jigsaw. We had to do the same thing in our new van (video to come!) they give you a TON of height that most people won’t need!

    Are you sucking air in or blowing air out from the van to keep the interior cooler? THX

  • @steviebee1989

    You didn’t show cutting the cover (on the inside) to fit and hide the hole edges. Should I just measure, mark and then use a jigsaw?

    • @AbroadReachTravel
      @AbroadReachTravel  3 роки тому

      Exactly, we marked it and used a jig saw to cut. The fan has a large flange on the trim ring so you don’t have to be exact.

      You will have to remove your headliner to check for wires before you cut. This may involve removing any or all trim pieces up there like handles or lights. There are probably guides online for headliner removal.

    My Chevy van has a ribbed roof, too. Did you use self leveling caulk? Did the caulk remain under the van edge without running or sagging? Thanks.

    • @AbroadReachTravel
      @AbroadReachTravel  3 роки тому

      We ran a large bead of 3M4200 around the opening prior to installing the fan. This bridged the gaps between the roof and the flange on the fan. After that cured we went over it with the lap sealant.

    Random question but I am trying to set up my van. What do people connect their 12V DC RV roof fan/vent to if they have a solar system in their van??? From what I have seen inverters only have AC outlets?? am I missing something??? Thanks

    • @lostvan5865
      @lostvan5865 4 роки тому +1

      If you have an inverter it is running of your 12VDC leisure batteries. You would need to have a fuse box set-up connected to your leisure battery so you can connect the fan to a 12VDC source by fusebox.

    • @AbroadReachTravel
      @AbroadReachTravel  4 роки тому +1

      adam heeley our 12v fan is hard wired into the 12v system, which is connected to your “house batteries not the inverter. It will go fan to fuse box and then to batteries. We wrote a pretty in-depth blog post about it here: abroadreachtravel.com/van-12-volt/ which also has a link to our wiring diagram which I think may be helpful. Once Andy is awake I’ll have him comment if I missed anything 😊

    Did you have to cut the bottom insert on the fan to fit your framing? I ask because with framing my insert is about an inch longer than my framing.

    • @AbroadReachTravel
      @AbroadReachTravel  2 роки тому +1

      Yes! We did have to trim that to fit. They make those fans to fit in such a wide variety of vehicles that they give you a lot of extra depth just in case!

    how did this hold up as far as leaks?

    • @AbroadReachTravel
      @AbroadReachTravel  3 роки тому +1

      It’s held up well! We did have some water inside during tropical storm Isaias, but we think it’s because the 50+ mph winds lifted the cover and rain came in sideways. We weren’t in the van at the time so we aren’t 100% sure. We haven’t had any signs of leaking other than that!
