He’s been a number one mainstream charts and underground rockstar/ bass player during 4 or five decades? Since before most people were born til past now, for sure
I think Colin is often overlooked because a lot of the praise goes to Thom and Jonny, yes he is is given plenty of acclaim and credit but he is def not compared to some of the other great bassists to ever play enough
The bass at the climax of Exit Music for a Film is absolutely monstrous. Also love the baseline in Nude. So simple but totally makes the song. Also the Airbag bass that comes in and out. Honestly I could go on forever. Thom and Jonny totally deserve the recognition they get but every member of that band is phenomenal.
i always say that the best parts of radiohead to learn their music are colin's. they really carry the band's secret flavour and you see what they're all about. also, colin is a big james jamerson fan and that explains a lot of why he's so good
It’s because he knows exactly where he fits in the overall sound, never overdoes it but never underdoes it either. He’s the foundation of the band, and so his job is to make sure that this foundation is as intriguing and beautiful as possible.
Not gravity, not the weight of the whole world right now, not even a million dollars could wipe the smile off my face for 13 solid minutes. Every second was glorious, even the funny snippets in between. Thank you for making this. It was S👏U👏P👏E👏R👏B👏
Wow!! Your ability to switch between a super syncopated 4/4 time on Burn The Witch to a 3:2 polyrhythm on Daydreaming was incredibly impressive! What a fantastic video
Never have I seen a better video that encapsulates why The Smile can never, ever replace Radiohead. Jonny and Thom are a MAJOR part, but without Colin, Ed, and Phill, it’s not the same (and to be clear, I don’t think it was ever supposed to be). Colin is so, so good. I never actually realized how high he often played on the neck. It makes sense considering Radiohead have had a heavy, low-bass kind of sound. A lot of their stuff is lighter, more… nuanced.
I really liked your tone, really appropriate for the style.. Some of the lines were a surprise, I didn't know Iron Lung was slapped (I need to listen harder), there were lots of technique goodies in there for me. Thank you!
Radiohead bass lines are so fucking weird but amazing at the same time They are not really groovy but lend more to the robotic sound that they have Just amazing all around and hard to describe
Pablo Honeys biggest sin is that it often can feel super generic, but it's really not that massive a problem. It's fun. It's a nice little alt rock album and in a few ways it was unique for the time. It is easy for it to feel like a terrible album considering what comes after in their career though.
I love how all the parts in radiohead fit so beautifully together and don't call attention to themselves, until someone calls attention to it and you are like 'Holy shit that's amazing'. how did I not notice that before?
I’ve never realized how absolutely powerful the emotional aspects of I Promise were, particularly the instrumentation. I always knew that the acoustic that Thom was playing made an impact, but I never realized how emotional Colin made the bassline. Just goes to show how well articulated Radiohead is at all times.
This video really made me reevaluate Colin Greenwood as bassist. I already thought he was good, but there are some many key contributions he makes that I just never attributed to him. Thanks to this idea and your excellent playing, I won't hear these songs the same way ever again,
3:18 Oh, that just gave me chill, it's such a good bass line to transition into the second half of the song, Colin is one of the grooviest bassists out there man. You're great, please make more videos, love your content!!!
I love how you show the pick stage Colin went through. I went through the same thing. For the first 10 years of playing bass I only played with my fingers and then for whatever reason switched to pick for another decade. Now I switch back and forth depending on the composition, but find myself opting for the pick more often than not.
Nice job!!! That must have taken forever to set up! I’m teaching a Radiohead band class this summer at the music program I work at and I’ll definitely have to share this with the bass players!
Awesome awesome video. A favorite baseline of his for me is that little descending line he does back into the main reckoner groove after the "in rainbows" break
You've inspired me to have a Radiohead day tomorrow - 11 hours of studio recorded goodness. Very nice job, I now have a better appreciation of CGs playing and how it has progressed (may even try a few tracks myself).
maybe i'll watch a minute or two of this *13 min later* holy shit. so good. seeing how Colin forms his phrases really makes you understand how unique his basslines are. thank you!!
This was so cool and mesmerizing to watch, I hope I get to play like you one day ! I only started playing bass four months ago. Been a Radiohead fan since 2012. This video makes me so happy, you made me rediscover Radiohead through yet another lens, thank you for this moment and I hope you are doing amazing, queen ! Keep on rocking :)
I am learning bass and RH is my all time favorite band, thank you so much for this! absolutely loved it!!, also, please consider doing some Vulfpeck maybe? *pretty please* that would be so much fun to watch!
Great video. I'm not a musician but I'm a massive Radiohead fan, and when you don't know music the bass playing tends to get overlooked. Really fun watch. (Also, thanks for extending the playtime for Paranoid Android, as any Radiohead fan would.)
just finished the video and only now read the description. Your bass face is a highlight! I love seeing people get into it when they play. I'm the same way, can't help it
lol i just subscribed like an hour ago after listening/watching your king gizzard cover again. I haven’t really ever listened to Radiohead, but now I want to dive into their discography! I would like to hear/watch an Oh Sees or Beatles chronology!
This really makes you realise how underrated Colin Greenwood is as a bassist. You killed it!
YES
Right!!
He’s been a number one mainstream charts and underground rockstar/ bass player during 4 or five decades? Since before most people were born til past now, for sure
underrated? seriously?
I think Colin is often overlooked because a lot of the praise goes to Thom and Jonny, yes he is is given plenty of acclaim and credit but he is def not compared to some of the other great bassists to ever play enough
I didn’t realise how great the baselines for kid A were. How to disappear completely probably has my favourite bass line in their whole discography
... and Kid A is their best album imo
@@7200ounceman Even if Kid A is a great album, for me In Rainbows is a splendor. The perfect match between rock and electro.
it’s incredible, such melodic power
@@fazylo2054 Kid A when u wanna cry the bends when u wanna jam and in Rainbows when u wanna do both at the same time😂
yes.
I’ve always found the bass at the end of Karma Police to be one of the most hypnotic bass lines I’ve heard
That and disappear completely of course lol
Playing a riff compilation like this is harder than it looks.
yup
In 1 take yep
doesn't look easy to me
I'd end up with terrabytes of me messing up and cursing 😅
True, switching tempos every couple of seconds would be the hardest part, I imagine
Absolutely died at the clip of Ed playing shaker.
Can we appreciate the entire video was in just 1 take ? holy shiiit you absolutely nailed it! great work.
Unreal. Just chopping up all those tracks was an enormous task. Then to learn them all in sequence…bravo!
I love how in Weird Fishes you shook your hand just like Colin does in In Rainbows From the Basement!
Nice catch.
the i might be wrong riff is insane
true
Chunkeh
You just covered 2 of my favorite bands ever in a month, in my main instrument. Amazing!
I was going to say the same!
Same here!!
same!
Yeah Colin's bass playing really makes radiohead what it is.. thanks for recreating all these bass lines
Wow that I Might Be Wrong baseline is insane
The bass at the climax of Exit Music for a Film is absolutely monstrous. Also love the baseline in Nude. So simple but totally makes the song. Also the Airbag bass that comes in and out. Honestly I could go on forever. Thom and Jonny totally deserve the recognition they get but every member of that band is phenomenal.
The bass at the end of exit music sounds like purgatory
i always say that the best parts of radiohead to learn their music are colin's. they really carry the band's secret flavour and you see what they're all about. also, colin is a big james jamerson fan and that explains a lot of why he's so good
Colin is such a killer bassist, how does he come up with riffs that fit in so good like this
It’s because he knows exactly where he fits in the overall sound, never overdoes it but never underdoes it either. He’s the foundation of the band, and so his job is to make sure that this foundation is as intriguing and beautiful as possible.
This is what a real Radiohead fan looks like, I absolutely love you for doing this. You're very talented.
Not gravity, not the weight of the whole world right now, not even a million dollars could wipe the smile off my face for 13 solid minutes.
Every second was glorious, even the funny snippets in between. Thank you for making this.
It was S👏U👏P👏E👏R👏B👏
Wow :') thank you so much 😘
Beautiful wording dude.
Agreed ! I am in awe of your skills and love of RH, and in awe of Colin's ear in writing all these quirky cool lines. He is genious👏👏👏😺
What about king of limbs?
Wow!! Your ability to switch between a super syncopated 4/4 time on Burn The Witch to a 3:2 polyrhythm on Daydreaming was incredibly impressive! What a fantastic video
holy shit. Never realised how sick iron lung's bass line was. Amazing video btw
I'm so happy you chose that jazzy outro from Optimistic!
This is one of my favorite Radiohead vids on UA-cam. Colin is massively underrated.
Never have I seen a better video that encapsulates why The Smile can never, ever replace Radiohead.
Jonny and Thom are a MAJOR part, but without Colin, Ed, and Phill, it’s not the same (and to be clear, I don’t think it was ever supposed to be).

my iron lung was a surprise for me too
to fair it’s mixed really low
I always heard the slap but never registered it as a bass slap for some reason...just contextual I guess
never realised how sick the bass in i might be wrong is until now - great job!
Oh so you're a Radiohead fan? Love your channel pal.
Radiohead bass lines are so fucking weird but amazing at the same time They are not really groovy but lend more to the robotic sound that they have Just amazing all around and hard to describe
The best and most accurate cover of I Might be Wrong i've seen
I'm glad to see Pablo Honey get some love - I have a soft spot for that album. Beautifully played, by the way.
Pablo Honeys biggest sin is that it often can feel super generic, but it's really not that massive a problem. It's fun. It's a nice little alt rock album and in a few ways it was unique for the time. My exact thoughts. I had never noticed the bass before, I'm so happy to have found this video
DAMN that National Anthem riff though---WELL DONE!
currently dealing with the fact there's a radiohead song with slap bass on it and I never noticed it...
Nude, Bloom, Staircase are the kinda songs made for the bass to shine.
Nailed it.
Staircase is so underrated!
The national anthem
@@El5000Xd Yeah!
I can really feel the planet telex pleasure vibes. Cant stop listening since a week. TY really nice job
2:57 I see what you did there... and I like it!
😅
I'm a massive Radiohead fan and this was recommended to me on my homepage and for once the UA-cam algorithm did something right. Omg
Though Supercollider would have been a great addition, but that transition between Decks Dark andf Identikit was brilliant
This is fantastic, and major props for playing Trans-Atlantic Drawl.
REAL
Right?! It's such a deep cut. Love that song
Colin is my favorite bass player, you definitely nailed his feel, and the main reason Radiohead makes me want to dance.
Amazing . I love Colin's work and Radiohead. You look so happy at the end of the video 😉
Yeah because I realized I finally got it, after 8 attempts... :'(
@@vickyveryno I felt that! Still it gives the end such a nice vibe, I was smiling too

How to disappear completely is so beautiful. Colin is an amazing bassist. And also a big thanks to you for playing these riffs! 👍🏻
i love the fact that most gizzheads are also radioheadheads, me included
+1
Hello from Russia! My friends and I are 30+ and we are all fans of Gizzards and Radiohead
check out Thom Yorke/Jonny Greenwood's side project The Smile. heavy King Gizzard vibes.
well i was a radioheadhead way before gizz even existed, but hey there's love enough for the both of em here
Radioheadheads
It’s you again! King Gizz and now Radiohead. You have a great taste in music
Le riff de where i end and you begin est si incroyable! Super vidéo, Ca marrive souvent de la regarder je ne men lasse pas!

Amazing. Can't imagine how much work went into this
a bit 😅

Respect! I'm a massive fan of Colin Greenwood bass lines and you nailed every single one of them in a compilation which is WAY harder than it seems.
Nice job!!! That must have taken forever to set up! I’m teaching a Radiohead band class this summer at the music program I work at and I’ll definitely have to share this with the bass players!
This is the Radiohead video I didn't know I needed!
feel like i havent appreciated some of these basslines properly till hearing this! amazing, definitely inspired me to learn a few
Is this going to be a series then? Because I would absolutely watch more videos like this
i hope so :D
Awesome awesome video. A favorite baseline of his for me is that little descending line he does back into the main reckoner groove after the "in rainbows" break
I’m obsessed with that line… so slinky… absolute magic!
Ahh, bass face. The look of true artistry
Or toothache 😁
Colin has a remarkable versatile player. You did an incredible job highlighting some choice bass tunes.
Nailed it!! Colin is such a great bass player, you did him justice
You've inspired me to have a Radiohead day tomorrow - 11 hours of studio recorded goodness. Very nice job, I now have a better appreciation of CGs playing and how it has progressed (may even try a few tracks myself).
The tone is spot on in 99% of this. Great job!
So glad that You was part of the chronology. Probably one of my personal favorites from Pablo Honey.
Your playing is so clean and in the pocket. You made my day, thanks for the inspiration.
AMSP is my favorite album, and you absolutely did it justice. Good job :D
yo wtf, i just saw this and the king gizzard chronology, both of these are sick
i hope you keep up with the concept going forwards.
Homenaje merecido a Colin como bajista.Un trabajo excelente.
thank you so much. soooo inspiring. havne't picked up the bass in the a long time and you got me learning a lot of these bass lines you're playing.
also your playing is sooo good!

Do the My bloody valentine bass chronology
That would be great, but maybe not enough albums?
I second this
I third this
I fourth this
I fifth this !!
Really impressive, you picked really excellent sections that are really moving
God forbid; if Colin ever needs a sub in on tour… You’d be the go to!
By the way , that was a tone of fun! Thanks!
God bless your choice of songs, staircase, bloom, ill wind, I might be wrong, not only underrated songs but mega underrated bass lines
The tone, the ghost notes, the phrases, just perfect! Awesome awesome job!
Unbelievably underrated bassist. Great job on this vid
You nailed it! i love how the bassline melts around the acoustic guitar in How to disappear completely
This is a GOOD UA-cam channel
Now this I really enjoyed. Colin is a wonderful bassplayer and this compilation is spot-on. 13:16 minutes of my life well spent! Thank you!
This is an awesome video and really highlights how good Radiohead’s bass lines are across so many albums. Fantastic performance as well
Holy shit!! Amazing work yet again!! Please keep these coming! They're badass!
Wow, I love that you took stuff off of the EP's as well, this is awesome!
Amazing bass playing! Never realized before that there was a slap part on My Iron Lung, and it's my favourite song from The Bends
