Super helpful! We just found wild asparagus in our backyard and I had no idea how to harvest as well as make sure it continues to come back year after year. This was great. Thanks!
My father introduced asparagus to us when no one knew about this plant in Punjab, India. He would generally collect it same way you did. We used to saute it with peas and eat with chapati. It was favorite food. I guess I need to go back to village again to treasure hunt. Thanks for this video.
Hello fellow forager. We are about as far apart as people can get in this country but we obviously share the same interests. Here in Texas we wade in feral asparagus and feral garlic every spring. Feral pomegranate bushes and banana plants, also. There is also a very thriving population of feral shiso and epazote. Yum. Free food everywhere! Don't even get me started on the wild dewberries...I am watching out for the flowers so I know where the best patches are and can return to them for harvest time. Happy harvesting!
This reminds me so much of when I was a kid... my dad would drive us out in the country, and we'd go really slowly, looking for asparagus along the roadsides. When he finally decided it was time to go home, he'd speed up, but we kids didn't want to give up, so we'd about go cross-eyed trying to watch for it a 55 mph. :-) Now, it's a saying between us when we can't give up looking for something. We say, "it's like looking for asparagus!"
Good stuff, Luke. You sort of mentioned leaving some by not being greedy, but I want to make it clear to others...leave some to go to seed to replenish the crop.
I showed this video to my husband, and now I;m excited to go into the woods on our property, and try to find some asparagus! Who cares if it's technically wild or not. If I, or someone else didn't plant or cultivate it, that's wild to me. How awesome that you have a beach in your own back yard too. I would be down there every morning, with coffee in hand, taking a daily walk. Keep up the great videos Luke and Sindy!
I miss living in indiana. so much wild asparagus. dozens of pounds. I wish I could find someone to mail me some roots, I live in Texas now and I highly doubt I'd be able to find wild asparagus here in south texas
You're a good dude man. This is very informative and also does a good job at painting the moral contrasts that come with deciding what to harvest and what to not harvest. You've got the right idea. Don't get too greedy and everyone gets a great harvest! Promote the species uber alles.
This was really interesting! Thank you for this! I now knew w to keep my eyes open! I have never seen how asparagus grows, so this is great information to have. Bless you, and have a wonderful day!
Great video ***** ! Alot of people don't realize that Apple orchards are loaded with asparagus. We have sooo much growing at the base and inbetween the trees its amazing. Now that it's up I'm eating it at least once a day. Please do morr videos on foraging for food. Thanks again!
If you live in an area where they commercially grow asparagus birds eat the seeds and translpant it in different locations. Barbwire or other fences where birds land to rest are great places to look especially in or along ditches.
I love wild asparagus! Got to hunt and eat some this year. Ours were the ditch kind. Thanks thought for the tips on how to spot where they might be, for the next season.
I found a huge amount of asparagus lately all found in ditches close to a country road. I am wondering if this is safe to eat since its only about 20 feet off the road along a farmers fence at the top edge of a ditch that is on the side of a country road that has a car drive by about every 30-60 seconds. Does this sounds safe to eat or can it have contaminates from cars passing by.
These days it's very easy to have soil tested. Personally, I would not worry about it, most of those contaminates go elsewhere, those who don't rain off and the soil transforms most of them. I don't think the Asperges takes those out of the soil also.
I have an older neighbor that tells of harvesting asparagus along the irrigation ditches in west Texas. Arizona area. He says they were planted long ago for erosion control
Hi Was just talking to friend and he was gathering wild asparagus when I stopped thought maybe hed broken down then seen his asparagus in his hand ... we talked a bit he showed me some of the lis iOS looki g asparagus I've ever seen Wetted my appetite for finding some
Well I guess I won't be able to find any on Pensacola beach as it is hot hot hot and no shade. I grew up in Michigan and we had wild rhubarb. Great pies with strawberries.
Do you have to be careful collecting wild asparagus in ditches? I know with cattail you do because the filter the water and absorb toxins from the water and runoff.
Oh my! i never thought there is wild asparagus what a surprise when i tried to plant the asparagus seed i bought i waited for over a month til it started to grow and looks just like a kind of grass that normally grow everywhere during rainy season its really different from what i was expecting to be like so i searched and found out that the seed i got is a wild asparagus
Thanks for the helpful video! Now all I need to find is a good video on where to find wild morel mushrooms in my area right now. They grow in my region, but i cannot locate their growing areas...
hmmm, sometimes I find some really poky wild artichokes, but not asparagus. Asparagus is so tasty, and to find it there, wow. Yeah, when the spears start to thin out too much it's best not to pick them. really cool to see the asparagus growing there at the beach!
I live in NEBRASKA & not too many beaches in NE but the ditches always gets sprayed around here so not many wild asparagus around here the spray kills everything I remember going with my dad he always has buckets along for things like black berries / raspberries / wild plums / and yes asparagus they all grow in and around the ditches .
Great video and thank you but what part of the nation are you and what season are you in? It looks from what your wearing that it's summerish, am I right?
@MIGardener Probably only people from Michigan know what you meant by "we're not going to be up for another week or two." ;-) Evidently, "going up north" is a strange saying to those not blessed with living in Michigan. Thanks for the great tips and beautiful lake shore views!
Nice, however cutting them is not the correct way in picking. you need to slowly bend the stalk till it snaps in half on its own. You will have a better tasting asparagus. Great finds thou
hey luke, like you i also live abouts in Michigan. i was wondering what other good stuff we have growing wild around here? and how to find it? id really appreciate it! love the videos, keep up the good work!
Hi Luke, thanks for sharing! I'm curious.. do you know if wild asparagus is just cultivated asparagus gone feral or is it its on plant? Again thank you!
Thank you for sharing Luke! Asparagus are one of my favorite vegetables! But where I live doesn’t have beaches but we have lakes, does asparagus grow by the lakes/ponds?
Patrick Meehan well as TheNorthwestForager asked, it is totally cultivated asparagus, however it was not planted here. the seeds just blew there, or were dropped by pooping birds, or deer.
What about mushrooms? Right outside my house mushrooms have started to pop up, literally, out of nowhere. Are they safe to eat? I don't live in a forest environment, just lots of rain this week and I was walking my dog and noticed something popping in the grass a few yards away. I go and look and its handfuls of these small mushrooms.
Ruby , be soon careful. you must research and be certain of the identification. Most are poisonous varieties, very deadly that cause multiple organ system failure. (retired critical care and er nurse)
As a kid in southern Idaho, I didn't realize people bought asparagus at the store, we'd just go down the ditch across the street :) Right now we're trying to grow our own in a container garden but they're so tiny and thin....maybe they'll thicken up the 2nd year?

Thanks for sharing. I need to go hunting soon.
We picked about 15 pounds off the ditches here this year. So much better than store bought!!!
It really is so much better. Nothing beats it!

Here is an idea... Look for the berries on the wild female asparagus. Save the seeds inside. Plant and grow your own wild variety. Just a thought. :)
Chana Moriel takes a while but apparently it worth it
Have you tried this?
Great information. Especially describing the old dried stocks I think I remember seeing that in Louisiana along ditched area.
Thank you so much! My family will be camping in Muskegon next week. I’m excited to take them foraging on the beach.
I'm guessing you learned that you'd need to go in the springtime to find any, but I'll bet you enjoyed the beauty and your time there!
Thanks Luke, I have seen folks foraging every spring by the expressways here, but didn't have a clue what they were up to, NOW, I know too!lol

In Wisconsin in the fall it turns orange.Keep track of where you saw it,and come back the following year when they have grown enough to cut.

Is there any particular things to look for in a ditch that might be friendly to asparagus? I think I would have better luck finding some in a ditch.
Love the video, but you might want to explain the difference in where you live. I live in Maine. I would like to know if there is a difference . Ty :)

TheNorthwestForager it is definitely cultivated asparagus that seeds have been spread around by birds and whatnot.

We saw some growing near a stream in Israel today.
Luke do you think that someone might have planted some a long time ago . That wild Asparagus looks normal . Great video.
