In this video we talked about, How ancient sailors navigate using stars and how they find their latitude and longitude.
To find our latitude we need to find the polaris star first, we can find it on the ursa minor constellation in that constellation stars develop a spoon-like pattern called little dipper. In the end of the little dipper we can find the polaris star.
After the finding of palaris we measure the angle between horizon and the polaris. We can measure it using our pinky finger, if that finger covers the gap between the horizon and the polaris we can assume we are in 1 degree latitude. And to find longitude we need to measure the difference of time zones between two places.
For example if one sailor wants to go south to north and he has a sand clock or pendulum that indicates the time of the sailor at his longitude. if goes in the wrong way like east or west the time in his clock and time of the sun in his place mismatches so that he can understand how many degrees of longitude went in the wrong way.
After knowing the coordinates, we need to know directions and we can easily find it using sunrise and set and some stars.
But not all the time of year the sun rises in the east and people on earth in different places have different points of view in the stars.
So people in different regions have their own navigation techniques. For example polynesians have a star compass, it has four directions and each direction has seven subgroups. They know which star rises in this subgroup.
