  • I take a look at the Panasonic LX100, my first experience working with 4K video - and I’m so glad I went for it!
    In this video, we take an in-depth, practical, hands-on approach to figuring out who this camera is for, its strengths and weaknesses, and who should be looking at other cameras, like the Panasonic GH4.
    Bottom line -- Although the LX100 is feature-packed powerhouse, if you’re a serious videographer or photographer, you’ll have serious concerns with the LX100. I found myself able to cope thus far with its admittedly crippling downsides, (@3:55) and will continue to keep it in my gear arsenal as I expand, for its awesome capabilities, in such a small package, for such a low price.

    I came here for your LX-100 review. The best explained and HONEST one of them all. No BS. Then I went and see your short movie, MINIMALISTIC, as you call it. I see more of this nowadays. You have the talent to export worldwide. Please keep on going, kiddo. You have a great future.

    No kidding, one of the best review styles I have seen of any product! Succinct yet covered all critical issues. I was thinking of getting an LX-100 as an entry to 4K and continue my love of manual stills, but you highlighted some important flaws with the video focusing. Hmms, decisions decisions! Thanks!
    Update - March 2018: I bought one and love it. Using tripod for 4K video of scenic views so I pre focus in manual mode. Tack sharp results! Love the Filters button because for stills, I like shooting portraits and street scenes in monochrome and like the ability to activate the filter quickly. LX-100 is still relevent in 2018 because other than a compact Fuji, it has no competition when it comes to ergonomics.

      +Alex Blok Yep same here. I was on the verge of getting myself one after watching tons of reviews. But you Jonathan did one of the best reviews I have seen because it exactly points out the most critical flaws for someone who wants this camera fort the 4K video capabilities : 15 minute time limit, unusable AF for video and difficult manual focus (try getting a dog that is running around in focus #$@#&!!), lack of built in ND filter, limited zoom, limitations of the stabilizer etc.
      I wanted a 4K compact for the ease of carrying it around as opposed to a DSLR. But now I think I may go for a dedicated camcorder and forget about the 4K.
      Great voice over voice by the way. You can make some money with that instrument.

      +windmill10 Hey, what did you end up getting? I'm thinking about getting the RX100 mark III - without 4K - because of the flaws in regards to the 4K video of the IV..

    • @windmill10
      @windmill10 8 років тому +1

      I ended up getting the Sony AX53. In the end I decided to get a dedicated video camera which has some obvious advantages. The AX53 has great steady cam capabilities on top and good 4K performance.

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  9 років тому

      +TechLineHD Thanks for the positive comment!! Made my day. The Samsung NX500 (which I have not personally used) shoots 4k, as well as the Sony RX100 - although it is rather limited. The best all-around solution at this point is really the GH4.

    • @TechLineHD
      @TechLineHD 9 років тому

      you are welcome dude! Thanks for the advice on cameras. Currently I am saving up for the camera upgrade as I use cheap Canon DSLR with stock lens... Can you also recommend decent lens (but not too crazy expensive) for video shooting for the GH4 ?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  9 років тому

      +TechLineHD Wow so lenses really depend on what you want to do with them! Do you know what you're going to shoot? (Short films, skateboarding videos, conferences, vlogs, a documentary?)

    • @TechLineHD
      @TechLineHD 9 років тому

      +Jonathan Hinterberger Well, I am shooting tech review, which basically involves a lot of close-up shots but I also love to have zoom since I love shooting outdoors with nice sceneries but can't always put the tripod very close to the object. I searched a bit on Google and some say that Sigma 18-35mm with f/1.8 aperture does it both.... For a ridiculously high price.... Any suggestions/alternatives? :)

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  9 років тому

      +TechLineHD Unfortunately, good lenses are rather expensive. For close ups, the kit lens will serve you quite well (panasonic 14-4mm, about 150-170$) From there, just from a cost perspective, you should check out some cheaper prime lenses, and consider adapters. A Canon 50 1.8 will be great for a lot of stuff. As soon as you're taking zooms, things get more expensive. Consider your budget and priorities and do some creative Google searches! :)

    It's a very nice camera. I like the way how the use sensor, and it makes sense for 4K video, without pixel interpolation. The extended lens looks ugly, but other than that I like what it has, as well as what it doesn't have. I like that it does not have articulated LCD, no toucschreen, and no build in flash. That's pro-grade camera territory, and it has great aesthetics and build and finish. What's not to like? I like a lot. I got both the LX100 and the D-Lux version as well.

    Fantastic review. good work.
    I shoot stills professionally on a GH3 and a plethora of different lenses and would like a travel snapper with a wide aperture to augment this. The LX100 was high on the list but any kind of serious colour casts on skintones is a potentially major deal-breaker for many I would think. Correcting colour artefacts in post is horribly frustrating. Might have to keep looking.
    Can't wait for the GH5 by the way! Would like to see a video on that when it's out. Keep up the good work.

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому

      Thanks, +Marticulate! I agree with the skin tones. It bothers me more and more each time I work with it. Oh well, some people report not noticing them. The RX100 is pretty comparable, might want to check it out! Review of that one is still incoming.

    What is the difference between the Panasonic LX100 and the Panasonic FZ300 in terms of focus? I'm interested in shooting sports video.

  • @TechInspected
    @TechInspected 8 років тому

    Thanks for the great review. I'm having trouble choosing between this and the FZ1000. I'll mostly be using the camera for 4K handheld video interviews outside and on a tripod at home for detail shots of tech gadgets.
    The things I like about the LX100 is the compact size and more affordable price, but the FZ1000 has way better handheld stabilization, seems like better video autofocus, mic input, and articulating screen. However the FZ is huge and costs more.
    I'm aware I can't go wrong with either, and the idea of a smaller device is really pleasing to me but I'm worried about its AF and IS in video. What's your opinion? Thanks!

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому

      +The Technoclast Hey! Looks like you've put some good thought into this already. My initial concern when comparing the two cameras is that the FZ1000 doesn't shoot 24fps video. It only shoots 30. If that's what you want, then that's fine!
      The full-frame equivalent of the zoom range while shooting on the FZ is 37mm-592mm. That can be a good thing, but can also be frustrating if you want to shoot wider shots. The LX100 has a 24mm-70mm equivalent and features a f/1.7 to f/2.8 aperture, letting in slightly more light. The FZ1000 thankfully has a longer 4k record time limit of 30min which can be very useful for certain shoots. Lastly, the FZ100 also features 1080p 120fps shooting, a feature not available in the LX100.
      I supposed I would jot down what your main priorities are for shooting, (is that microphone input a big deal for you? When would you use autofocus in video?) and go from there. ---Full Disclosure: I'm basing my opinion fully off of reviews and tech specs. Remember that there is nothing like holding the actual camera in your hand and using it!---

    • @TechInspected
      @TechInspected 8 років тому

      +Jonathan Hinterberger Thanks for the reply. The FZ1000 has gotten a firmware upgrade to enable 24 fps video, so that's no longer an issue.
      I mostly use in-camera audio but the external option would be nice later on, but I will need AF in video 100%. I'll be fine with 15 minute record limits since I take short clips only.
      Really tough decision I know! I will definitely have to walk into a camera store one day and compare them in my hands. Thanks again!
      *I'm slightly leaning towards the LX100 right now, but who knows what I'll think tomorrow?

    • @Petrus-
      @Petrus- 8 років тому

      +Jonathan Hinterberger Well I'm going backpacking so I want a small camera and I need good filming to create videos but be able to take some nice stills as well. Im kinda leaning against the RX100 for the small design and slow-mo capabilities but its much more expensive then the LX100. The LX100 seems nice because of all the manual controls and better price. :) which one would you prefer overall?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому

      +PetrusLidbeck I have limited first hand knowledge of the Rx100IV, but my impression is that is has some more advanced features, and some specific downsides. For instance, no built in time lapse mode (a feature I personally love and use often!) However, it does have great video quality, and live video output. I think if I did choose the rx100, I would get a good case for it as it seems less hardy than the LX100, while being lighter and slimmer. Hard call man, unless you want 4K all the time. The rx100 overheats after a few minutes of 4k internal recording.

You made a really good point - resolution is not all that counts. ua-cam.com/video/Z-_HhGjNrKU/v-deo.html Sam and Niko of Corridor Digital have a really good video that can show you how to shoot great stuff on your phone. A lot of it has to do with three point lighting and dynamic range - which, if you don't know about - you might want to learn before purchasing a new camera. It'll make your video pop much more than a lens or sensor.

      Hey! Probably an interchangeable lens camera is best. You don't need 4k for most situations, although it's very popular now. Panasonic G7 kit looks very good and is in your price range but I haven't gotten my hands on it yet. You could also spend a bit more and look at a used black magic pocket cinema camera or Panasonic gh2/gh3. I would recommend against investing in cheap dslrs as the video has become somewhat outdated. That being said the most important thing is to get out and practice shooting. Use your phone, a friend's camera, anything.

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому

      +Miguel De La Cruz I've been using the Heliopan 58mm Variable ND with the Fotasy LX100H Hood for the past several months... It has the same issues as the step up filters I used - jamming the lens extension motor. In order to get around the problem, I just removed the front metal, like in this video: ua-cam.com/video/-C8pW9Jjg-I/v-deo.html
      Does that answer your question? You definitely need some sort of step up ring or one of these hoods if you're using filters.

    Good review albeit a bit heavy on the negatives. At its price point, the LX100 is groundbreaking, with features not found in cameras costing 3X as much. But some budget photo/video enthusiasts expect to the world for $500-600. I'd probably give the LX100 5 stars and give this type of user 1 star. ;-)

    So this is not a point and shoot camera ? im saying because all the focus problem on video, a good p&s camera with video becomes like a good camcorder, doesn't ? a big problem for years with video dslr is focus on video, the canon 70d was going to be like the first dslr / camcorder and it was oowk.. so whats the deal is this like a dlsr with an eternal lens ? or is this a real 4k p&s camera... - good video

    Hi, can you tell me what is the best for videos: Panasonic vx878, FZ1000, Lx100 or something else? I'm not professional and I'm not planning to be but of course I want my video to be atleast good. I'm ready to spend 400-800€ ( maybe a little bit more if something is really good, especialy at low light and 4K)
    BTW What does it mean that your video has record time limit?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  9 років тому

      +80sMetalFun95 My personal recommendation (unless you have a specific reason to use 4k) is to avoid 4k cameras because the cameras are more expensive, and 4k media is impractical at this point. A Canon EOS T3i, or Panasonic GH2 or GH3 is perfect for the beginning videographer / photographer.
      BTW, the video record time limit means that after 15 minutes, you must press record again to continue.

    • @80sMetalFun95
      @80sMetalFun95 9 років тому

      +Jonathan Hinterberger Well, I want 4k so I'm thinking about these three cams. What would be your choice for videos, I dont care about pictures. I need something for every day use, concerts, vacations and so on which works very good at low light.

    • @sarunasj
      @sarunasj 9 років тому

      +80sMetalFun95 Your options for a good 4k camera with good low light performance are WAY out of your price range. I know, it's unfortunate. The Sony a7s ii it pretty the best cheap camera atm. But like Jonathan has recommended the GH4 is an excellent option.

      +Wonderful Madness I've been thinking about it too especially because of black friday but I'm still not sure if I need that expencive thing for amateur use. I found this company with good but strange price, have you ever heard of them ? personalelectrosolutions.com/index.php?route=common/home

    • @sarunasj
      @sarunasj 9 років тому

      +80sMetalFun95 haven't heard of them, keep an eye out on SlickDeals as well as Black Friday. Have to remember Black Friday is for old stuff the stores want to get rid of. I would urge you to consider getting a t5i from adomara for $399 after rebate, it's 1080p but hell of a camera and one of the best choices for $399 because it's still $650 everywhere else plus you get a printer

    Lx100 or FZ300? Im into film making but I take photo here and there. Whats the best cheap budget 4k camera?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  7 років тому

      FZ300 has a much better zoom range, which can be great for travel photography! If you get the chance, I'd recommend heading to your nearest camera store and getting your hands on both.

    • @helladope
      @helladope 7 років тому

      Jonathan Hinterberger I also have a T6. Would my quality get better if I change the lens, im planning on getting the 10-18 wide angle. Would have a difference at least? Btw can you do a review or video test on FZ300 if you can?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  7 років тому +1

      DSLRs (especially older ones) are particularly limited when it comes to video quality. You might see slight changes in the 'crispness' of video with a better lens, but it won't be much. I'll definitely post something if I get the FZ300!

    I would like to start making videos, like places I visit or myself talking, so in this case what would be better for me? nx 500 or lx100? Or maybe even something else? Thanks for help! :-)

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  9 років тому

      +Dominik Kulas I haven't had a chance to check out the NX500 but for stuff like that you might want to get a DSLR or mirrorless (like the canon t3i, t4i, t5i, or Panasonic gh2, gh3) and buy the interchangeable lenses, having that focal length flexibility is really nice for vlogging; a long lens can be helpful when traveling. You fixed on getting 4k?

    For starters on photography do you think the lx100 is a good option?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому +1

      Probably not. I would opt for a cheaper camera with interchangeable lenses and a larger sensor like a Canon Rebel DSLR or similar Nikon. It depends on what type of photography you're doing though!

    • @miguelteles2972
      @miguelteles2972 8 років тому

      Jonathan Hinterberger My uncle is selling his LX100 for 500€, does it become a better option for the price or...? Yes, i understand that! Interchangeable lenses and a larger sensor are a best option overall but im only 16 years old and i feel like i dont need to be carring a bag full of lenses and a DSLR!?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому

      +mikaman MV Good things to consider! If you want to carry something more portable the lx100 certainly will be better. I think for 500 euro you might consider an older dslr just because of that larger sensor. That being said, you can learn so much about lighting, composition, and about what you like shooting with almost any camera you can get a hold of. It's all about exploration and practice!!

    Do you think i should get this or the D-lux typ109 which is the leica version?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому

      Since they're pretty much the same in all aspects, if they're the same price, I'd go for the lx100. It has at least a few small grips on the body allowing for better handling.

    • @sinkanabilah3379
      @sinkanabilah3379 8 років тому

      +Jonathan Hinterberger how about the lx100 vs sony rx100 IV ?

    • @JonathanHinterberger
      @JonathanHinterberger  8 років тому

      Well it really depends what you want to do with it. When shooting in 4k, the rx100 can only shoot for a few minutes, then it overheats. But it does has some cool features like slow motion and s-log video. If you're going for flexibility and you want to shoot 4k, I'd say to go for the lx100.
