I used to drive an articulated timber skidder ( John deer 540b grapple skidder ) when I was younger and it had the same gearbox as the older John deer in your vid, it was brill and never had a problem with it 👍
fully agree with you about the sg2 cab great cab its still a great cab,and im not a big jd fan either,i used to draw grass with a 3650 used to leave the door open to listen to the exhaust note.
Great vid really good detailed review of these great tractors I still use a 4650 on a new Jf forager to chop 1200 acres of grass each year, and powershift is perfect for that job and great visibility to the rear and sides from the sg can. Looking forward to your nxt vids on these tractors
My first job was on a farm with a 6600 with the 6 range quad power box and a 4055. The 66 was great on corn cart as it was quick compared to the 4055 but I was in love with the 55. I had the chance of a 4755 a few years back and I'm still kicking myself for not buying it.
Those quadrange boxes and the linkage control are great. I still have farmers ask for them in the smaller 6 series, reliable, easy to use and no high tech. The current speed matching in the current pwrquad is a nice feature though when shifting ranges.
Totally agree on the linkage controller. So intuitive and simple. Always bugged me when they moved to switch/computer based control on the 78/7930..a real step backwards in terms of usability. But I can understand from a sequencing/ HMS point of view why its gone that way as we approach automatic machine control...
Yep, totally agree but they should have stuck with that system as HMS is an auto function and sometimes you need to be able to feel and work and implement through a tricky area.
Hi Kurt that was another interesting visit, i see a dyno day here sometime with all these I don't know the power comments from your buddys ;). I drove a 2950 when I worked at the seed farm, I didn't mind the cab interior and most of the rest of it, but figured they got the exhaust and cab pillar both in the wrong place. Depending what we were doing it was a pain in the neck literally looking round it all day. That tractor dropped to bits at 10.000 hrs with serious hyd problems like many German Deere's do here in Canada I think the cold winters are hard on them. The 29 got traded for a used 6410 That was a lot better cab but it dumped the drive shaft from the motor to transmission. That was a $15.000 repair, and shortly after I left it went down the road for other expensive issues at around 9000 hrs. There's a 7800 in there now it looks rough as heck but it runs good and has had very few issues. He had a 9000 series 4wd to for pulling the big seeder and stuff that tractor had big clunky gear levers like you'd expect to find in a Belarus not a Deere. at 5000 hours it dumped the motor out and cost $30.000 to fix by the time Deere got it right the second time. I've driven them a lot but you'd never catch me owning anything other than a Deere 316 lawn tractor we have at home. That JCB manual I wasn't sure on re appeared the other day, but they doubled the listing price with only me watching it to about $135 Canadian. I'm not playing that game with them, so I'll keep looking for you . Take care see ya next time. Robert
Good video lord muck, a great pair of classics, the powershift 7000 were great to drive but because the gearbox drew more power they never had the grunt of the quad box models. The early quad box models had the forward/reverse shuttle on the same lever as quad shift, I quite liked it set-up that way. Looking forward to the 3050 video. Keep up the good work. Cotlandfarmer
The earlier ones had a separate Fwd/Rvs lever to your right near the hand throttle and quad change. This one had the LHR but I preferred the earlier type to be honest.
The 8400 was best tractor we have ever owned, had it 7000hours and sold it for $10000 less than when we bought it new! Go figure! I still like it better than the 8430’s we have now. It had powershift and I prefer it over IVT

I had mentioned that in the 4455 vid that the Magnum did indeed end the rule of the SG2 JD's. I know of a couple of early Magnums and am hoping to go and do a vid on them when I get time as they made everyone sit up and pay attention.

Lord Muck ,I think the pinical of the 3 point is to have it never fail. Way too much electronic controls on new equipment. I would not want to farm today. Way too many whistles and bells that are totally unnecessary. How old am I ? Take a guess.

I'm 45 now but when I was about 7-10 when the farmer came to plough (work) his land on the edge of our housing estate I'd stand on the corner where he gained access and watch him until he eventually called me over! I'd sit on the edge of his seat and steer for him. he would get called all sorts of peado shite nowadays but I assure you his intentions were GOOD he was a great fella I digress, I'd be in that cab for hours chewing his ear rite off,asking this n that I fcukin loved that field along side the m53, it was always corn its rape nowadays. Anyway I'm almost certain it was a david brown tractor, well it was white anyway, I remember getting segs on my little hands from holding the wheel so hard when ploughing. My mum n dad had and still have no idea what I use to get up2 when i went playing in that field. Harvest was another great time for me,again in the cabs of numerous machines😊.that's what I love still the machinery whether its agg or showmans or just plain old wagons. Ive got loadsa great memories from when I was a lad thanks to old fellas giving me the time of day.cheers mukka👍

It might look more rugged but it isn't ! Still a lovely tractor though and a great place to spend a day.

Yes speed matching would cut out that 'baulking' that sometimes happened, especially on the bigger ones.

A big tractor can do small jobs easily but a small tractor can't do big jobs. So best have a big tractor to do all jobs.

They did, just like the early 6000 series.
Don't forget, that Fwd/Rvs lever was probably fitted longer than the LHR as it was on all the 00 series and then the 10 series until the late ones.

farm i live on has a 7810 and 6506. 7810 was opened up a few years ago to run at 200hp. they were boss of machines.

Yeh, I remember watching some of your Skidder cab stuff and you going through the box - also that demo day you went to and tried others out.
That's an interesting comment from the owner about the comparison about fuel consumption - I have heard of similar comments from elsewhere.
Obviously having been opened up makes a difference but I remember others saying similar things when the 77's and 78's came out.
