    I found a 2014 vintage 55" Samsung 4K set at the recycling center about a year ago. We took it apart, found one single dry solder joint in the power supply that actually arced at some point. Once we reflowed that joint, it fired right up. It's been my main living room TV since then. Can't beat free!

      If you're going to put PCBs in a box, maybe best include all of them? It'd be a bummer if it turned out that the fault was actually on the power supply board after all!
      You said 4K screen, but is it an OLED? The interface looks very similar to a 55" 2018 model I just bought, though no popup webcam or control paddle on mine.

  • @Graham_Wideman

    Dave -- just in case you didn't try it -- those different HDMI inputs may be handled by different processors, so try all of them. According to the manual, HDMI-3 is the one intended for use with 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 at 50/60Hz-4K, while the others are not. (And for 4K you definitely need a cable intended for 4K). I realize you were testing it on 1080p, but regardless the different HDMI inputs may route through different chips.

    • @electronash
      @electronash 5 років тому +9

      Very good idea. ;)
      As you say, some formats bypass some scaler chips, and are sometimes even routed to the TCON directly (due to the high data rates for 4K).
      Nowadays, even the basic OSD stuff might be handled on the TCON itself, although obviously it's very doubtful here that the TCON has a fault.
      The PC and Rasp Pi will be outputting 4:4:4 RGB normally, of course, but yeah, 4:2:2 from a cable box or something is worth a quick test, especially if it's 480p / 576p.
      My hunch is a bad BGA joint between the HDMI input chip and some DDR RAM, or just a failed framebuffer RAM, as they can get quite toasty.
      (it's just as likely all of the scaling stuff is handled on the main SoC, like a lot of 4K TVs these days, but possibly with separate RAM for the input framebuffer.)
      There is some semblance of an image, though, and it's good that it does power up and detect the input format (and audio) just fine, so it definitely seems to be a scaler issue rather than the HDMI input side.

      @@ElliottVeares - Home 3D has been dead in the water for essentially a few years now, but there's still a small number of fans. Even passive 3D like this LG are underwhelming (my brother had an active 3D and it was so bad)... you're sacrificing picture quality for a novelty that isn't even as gimmicky as what theaters offer. Big picture 3D movies at the box office have also been in decline for a while, with the margins against their 2D showings dwindling. Finding an older 3D capable TV doesn't hurt anything, and you never have to use it. In fact, you can probably get your hands on a 3D Blu-ray player and used 3D movies for quite cheap, just to give it a whirl.

    Rather than do your 'follow the voltage' routine it may be time to step back from the electrical level. Many modern displays are ARM processor based and have a user accessible boot monitor. If so, the board will have a set of 3 or 4 pads (or a connector, maybe labelled Tx, Rx and GND and VCC) to which you can attach an FTDI based UART to USB adapter (with a scope you can work out the baud rate, most likely 115200). Via a terminal emulator you can interrupt the TV boot process by hitting ctrl-C. Once in the monitor typing a ? will give you the available commands (sometimes there are test commands for isolating problems). The peripheral chips will most likely be I2C based and the boot monitor I2C sub-commands will let you talk to them. Anyway, it's an opportunity to demonstrate fault finding from a different angle.

  • @GadgetUK164

    LOL! It's absolutely amazing what people throw out in that building!!!! I am guessing bad BGA connection on one of those chips covered, but maybe the chip that connects straight to the HDMI ports took an ESD zap or something. I do know that connecting HDMI cables up whilst powered can kill chips on occasion - happens a lot in PS4s and XB1s. I hope you get time to look at this at some point!

    • @electronash
      @electronash 5 років тому +11

      And this is why I sigh when I see certain products with no ESD protection on the HDMI ports at all.
      Obviously those newer consoles do have ESD clamp diodes (either in the HDMI chip or external), but it shows that even those still get zapped quite often.
      I'm talking more about specific boards that hook up an HDMI port directly to FPGA pins etc., and those definitely don't have full ESD protection beyond the usual IO clamps.
      And it's often not "static" itself that's zapping the chips, but that voltage difference you get between two SMPS-based devices, or say an Earthed PC and a monitor.
      Without the requisite extra ESD clamp diodes, some of those devices are just waiting to be zapped. And, as you said, it happens sometimes even *with* the diodes, so best to power down the console before connecting cables.
      #ESDrant lol
      But yeah, I agree that the fault on this TV might be a cracked BGA joint, or some bad RAM maybe. Could still be a bad core supply or something, of course.
      It looks as though it's at least trying to write the pixel data to the DDR RAMs, and obviously the scaler chip is detecting the input format (and even the PCM audio), so I reckon the problem could be the signal path between the scaler chip and RAMs, a bad RAM chip, or dodgy supply there.
      The OSD is probably handled directly by the "Smart TV" SoC, and uses its main RAM for the OSD buffer.
      It might even be the connection between the HDMI input chip and the ARM SoC itself, or noise or an LVDS / TMDS link maybe?
      I still can't believe people throw out stuff like that. I don't even have a 4K display yet. I only just got a 1080p TV and monitor about two years ago. lol

It's a 50" 4K Hisense Model 50H7709 Smart TV that would power up, the logo would display, then power off again. He was about to toss it in our dumpster and I asked if I could have it instead. He said yes and sure enough, I found some bulging caps in the power supply section. Ordered replacements, waited, installed and WOOHOOO!!! It worked! I had to order a replacement remote but it works beautifully. I gave it to my daughter for Christmas. A $300 tv for $8 in parts & shipping and a $12 remote.

    As it seems to be webOS based on those screens, hook up the Ethernet and use the LG TV Plus app on your phone as a full remote. That will get you into the menus. You should also install the developer tools app from the LG store and log in with a (free) LG developer account, which will let you turn on side loading of apps ahead of the day when they turn off the app store servers.

    You need a universal remote. The LG TV usually comes with a WebOS and you can just use it as a smartTV with a Ethernet cable or wifi it if has one.
    Netflix, UA-cam, etc all might work - or a lab project to display stuff over the web. Right now it's likely in the input mode for HDMI etc not the system OS.
    The channels usually need to be "scanned" in the menu to even get listed.

    Hey there. If you dont want to replace the board right now... if the unit has RGB inputs you could probably use those instead in the mean time. On LG tvs The HDMI signals are converted back to analog RGB before they go to the Tcon board so if the problem is not in the chip itself it should work like a charm. Enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work. Thumbs up! Also to anyone who is listening, HDMI ports are NOT plug and play. If you unplug or plug in cables while the tv is on you run the risk of this happening to you :o
