  • In order to test for osmosis in the potato, you will need two empty glasses (which will later be filled with water), two glasses (one filled with sugar solution, and one filled with tap water), two potatoes, and two pins.
    Potato A (Tap water potato) is peeled and cut flat on both ends and then hollowed out from the top until you barely reach the bottom. Then it is filled with the tap water and submerged in a glass filled less than half way with water. Place a pin on the outside to mark the water level of the water. Mark the outside of the glass with sharpie so you can monitor the water OUTSIDE of the potato. The same is done with Potato B (Sugar Solution Potato) except it is filled with sugar water instead of tap water. The procedure is the same otherwise.
    Leave the potato alone for THREE hours then write what happened.

    Wait, doesn't osmosis balance out the water concentration? I'm kinda confused because I thought the water inside the potato which was in the sugar solution cup, would decrease to balance the solution outside the potato :o

    why the water gathers in the hollowed part of the potato.???? is it due to osmosis

    • @kavitaaggarwal547
      @kavitaaggarwal547 6 років тому

      Yes, because osmosis refers to transfer of water from higher concentration area to lower concentration area through the semi permeable membrane. Potato too has a semi permeable membrane which plays a crucial role in osmosis.

    Hey Emmy, just wanted to ask that why did the inner and outer level of the tap water potato go down and this didn't happen with the sugar water potato? In school, we tried the same experiment with tap water potato and the water level didn't go down at all. Instead the inner level of water rose up. Can you please use your highly intelligent brain to find out an answer to this question?

    • @bgadicha1
      @bgadicha1 6 років тому

      Thats because both the inner and outer levels for tap water was of same concentration. So, they just get absorbed by the semi-permeable membrane which is in this case potato.
      In case of sugar water solution, the concentration of water outside the potato is higher than the concentration of water inside of the potato as its filled with sugar water. Since sugar molecule is anyway larger as well, it couldn't go into potato layers from inside of potato. Whereas from the outside, the water molecule could enter the inside of potato.
      Hence the tap water potato level went down both inside and out. Whereas the sugar water potato solution level went down outside and went up inside.
