First time I saw him was right after he was formally introduced as a member of the ABB and I stood about 20' from the stage and could barely breathe - I was more or less turned into a pillar of salt, watching him play. I was simply not prepared for the perfection and nuance and the focus of the power that was pouring out of his fingers. When his solo ended and I could move again, I asked one of the tapers "Who was that kid?" And he said "That's Derek. He looks young, but he's been playing that stuff for a LONG LONG time."
He watches other musicians instead of the crowd. He doesn't seem to see himself as the star. And once in a while while onstage with his wife you can see the love and respect in his face.
Everyone sings praises of his slide technique, while I'm over here in awe of his right hand technique. He's like Knopfler in terms of fingerpicking precision.

I love how he often plays soft at the climax of a phrase. It like when someone is speaking in a normal tone and then just when you think they are going to yell or shout to make their point...they whisper and the words and moment are branded in your memory forever. I've got to see him live.
