  • Sit back, this is a rather detailed comparison of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 and 490. Can't decide which one? Hopefully this video will help. Stayed tuned for other videos covering even more aspects of the two models.

Great video! Thanks. A little too fast at the start with the technical part, but I'm sure some people don't care about that stuff.

why he should invest time providing something that is easily availble on jenneau website and that you can see without pausing and zooming a video?

Pity about the saildrive for offshore ??

440 is direct drive. 490 sail drive. However many sail drive boats making offshore passages over the past 30 years. Newer units have double seals. Some have a third protection plate at the base. Certain drives can be maintained (somewhat) while the boat is in the water.

@@ROCKNAKSYACHTSALESINC Yes agree , Im a delivery skipper in NZ & have a somewhat different take on the 'long term' reliability of the sail drives . I've found a shaft drive with the very simple volvo dripless seal system & Kiwi prop to be far ahead of any other configuration & reasonable economical compared to most others . They are getting better except for those annoying fishing lines - It happens .

@@billhanna8838 Combination you mention is indeed a good one. We see some of the Kiwi props here. More the Varifold and Flexofold with PYI dripless seal. The PYI, and others like it and although reliable, do require some specific knowledge if things go astray. When given the chance on the larger boats there is often a direct drive option as they have the room for it. As a delivery skipper I would imagine you see some pretty sketchy arrangements. Speaking of fishing lines, I picked up one in the gulf stream and it melted into a rock hard plastic blob on the cutlass bearing. Took 45 minutes to cut it off.
