Man, the form factor of this device makes it really really cool to carry around.
Wish it had a keychain, so it can be a cool Accesories to carry around.
I think the issue with the Rom is the game looks like its interlaced like old Mini-DV/HDV tapes. it looks like it needs some sort of de-interlace/progressive scan mode.
It's deliberate on the emulator's part to both dither GB's 4 "colors" down to PlayDate's 2 and/or deal with the screen's limitation of only being able to update half it's pixels at a time
Great recs. I have very fond memories of playing yadhice (I think that’s what it was called) on my Palm V, what a throwback! Enjoying most of these.
Can the Audition music player play music via the speaker without headphones? Unfortunately I can't find any info on that.
Great list, I really hope they fix up Gamekid over time! One of my first thoughts when I saw the Playdate was how amazing Link's Awakening would be with some code to make the crank work with the fishing minigame. I'm really hopeful someday we see that. Otherwise I've just been enjoying the little surprises each week, enjoying how this odd ball lil guy fits into my free time without feeling like it's competing with any of my other game consoles.
How much did you get yours and how long did you have to wait to get it?
@@1anre Got it in the first wave but I preordered very early on, like first few minutes of the preorders.
Highly unlikely for the crank in Link's Awakening to happen; you'd probably have to modify the game code, not the emulator code.
@@endhalf Yeah probably so, I just like to dream? Maybe someone'll make a Link's Awakening inspired game ala Minit and ape on some of the crank controls.

Awesome list! A lot of retro games, but I wouldn't expect anything else. A good version of Pokemon would be awesome, though!
And the biggest question would be: is it worth to spend 200 USD to get into this?

I just can't see the appeal of this device. If it was $100+cheaper i can see more people giving the novelty of this system a try. It just seems like an overpriced passion project with half-baked games.
You know, you don't have be a jerk. People worked very hard on the original games and they're extremely polished and a few of them are really good- but they're all fun. So don't be saying half-baked if you haven't even played them
@@ziggyzoggin Easy Tiger. Don't take to heart, one man's opinion. But needless to say, my half baked opinion is commenting on the lack of value of the device. Each game is quite limited compared to today's options. Although they likely have a lot of charm and enjoyment to be had. For the sheer cost of the device and the marketing behind it. It's simply an overpriced, novelty item.
@@airrunner85 I'm from portland so I really like indie stuff and I love supporting them. Playdate was made in portland so I'm very supportive of it because it stands for some great stuff, they're really indie and you can put your own games on it. (I'm also a game developer.) Basically, I'm the perfect target audience. You were being upset at it for not being the target of the product and I just got mad that you were saying "whats the point of it?" when of course you don't know the point, you're not the target audience. But then you had to say "half-baked games" and that basically pushed all my buttons at once and triggered my defensive response. Mess with one game dev, you mess with them all. lol
@@airrunner85 Sure, it is a novelty item. But there's nothing wrong with that and the games aren't half baked. Its meant for people who love indie content, are game developers and are willing to pay some extra cash. But also, comparing it to modern consoles and games is a bit silly, as its meant to stand on its own. Yes, there is a lot of charm and personality to the device. thats the appeal. Quote from the people who made playdate "We just made playdate for fun."
im a new developer making some of those half baked games! can u be more specific for what you would like to see in a game, that is limited by the hardware, the amount of input controls. As a serious side note, love to hear your input as i find everyone has their own preferences of what fun and appeal is. Have you also tried the Pico-8 style genre??
