Unbelievable playing. Of all the greats, the one violinist you take to the desert island. You never tire of his sound. Which makes him the greatest of the greats.

I once read an album note that said Grumiaux was a descendent of Paganini and completed the “Concerto Reserve au Parisiennes, Paganini’s 4th. Was this promotion or fact. I have been doubtful for 60 years!

Grumiaux fantastico, uno dei più grandi nella storia del violino. Al regista invece darei 20 anni di carcere.

I also saw him live when I was 6 years old in his region of birth (in the church of Fleurus). I still remember of this! I was so stunned that my parent's friends were surprised I was so calm during his -long- concert! ;-)

The intonation, elegance and beauty of tone are all out of this world....on a par with Heifetz technically, but with an additional depth of musicality that is trademark Grumiaux. The notes are so absolutely in tune that there is clarity of sound that almost hurts. Oh to have been a concertgoer in the 1950s and 1960s when Grumiaux, Oistrakh, Menuhin, Stern and Heifetz were all in their prime, to name but a few.

In my opinion, he is too much forgotten as part of the greatest. His sound was unique as most of this giants'era.

  • @arturgrabczewski3816

I like Grumiaux a lot. His sound is so unique. I think he is struggling here because the conductor and orchestra are not following his tempo. He is rushing a bit though. Nevertheless they are often way behind him and this can quite frustrating and annoying for a soloists during the performance.

It was common to skip the third movement of the Symphonie Espagnole back in the day to make it seem more like a normal symphony with four movements.

The real reason is that Leopold Auer thought the 3 movement to be too sensuous and not appropriate for a man to play: Auer was so stupid and irrespective of composers. His cuts in the Tchaikovsky and difficult scales in thirds and tenths are distasteful.

    • @nickyork8901

At this time it was quite normal to miss out the intermezzo movement, which is a shame as it is very beautiful. The landmark recording by Heifetz omits it, although Menuhin's recording is the full 5 movements.

What a true master accompanied by the worst orchestra ever. The conductor does not follow Grumiaux' s tempo. The sound of Grumiaux and various shades of colors, and different kinds of continuous vibrato makes him unique. Unfortunately, in America, people did not know Grumiaux. He made a tour of USA once and it was a huge success. What a great musician! The slow movement is divine.

    • @marcvilleneuve1889

You did not notice of course how much difficulties he had tuning his violin... Each time he finishes a movement he has to readjust, because if you can hear, it is really out of tune after each movement. I believe it is not sloppy. On the contrary. He plays very well, and he is a great musician. His finesse and beautiful expression cannot be achieved by Ray Chen for instance. Me I do not care about a few mistakes here and there. I am interested in musicianship and beauty . Nowadays, except very few exceptions, all are clones and all have the same boring sound...
