Thank God one of the greatest violinists AG, and Sir Colin Davis, both were ardent Mozart admirers, had left us with the finest playing of a whole bunch of finest music(by Mozart). It's truly incredible how he had made so many consummate recordings solely devoted to Mozart. Yes his Mozart is simply incomparable dare I say he created how Mozart sounds like in violin and set a gold standard for future generations with such refined taste, breathing like ease and simple, the great beauty that is not self conscious. His Mozart is as great as it can get.
I suspect that those who never listened to this Mozart's N5 never listened to Mozart N5 as IT IS ... Grumiaux, Colin Davis , LSO, SUPERB, pure refinement
Ce violoniste est né en Belgique à Fleurus ou il a connu ses premiers succès ! Très sensible , il a été formé par son père très dur avec lui ! C'est à Londres qu'il a fait toute sa carrière brillante !
First I listened this Concerto No. 5 with Zimmermann, then shortly after with Gidon Kremer and at last with Grumieaux. To my opinion this third performance was the best.
HOLA......NO SE INGLES....PERO PUEDO PERCIBIR LA GENEROSIDAD DE USTEDES....APRECIO MUCHISIMO SU HERMOSO GESTO. INNUMERABLES GRACIAS......Y BENDICIONESSSSSSSSS!!!!
Sir Colin Davis deserves credit too. Under his direction, Mozart is full of verve, wit and mischief. That is the character of Mozart, God's only musical son.
Grumiaux is one of the frequently forgotten giants of 20th Century Violin playing. His performances are always in excellent taste, technically perfect and infused with warmth and clarity. Younger violinists such as Anne Sophie Mutter and Joshua Bell could be well advised to listen to him; you do not have to play faster than everyone else( Mutter) or have spasms on stage(Bell) to get noticed and loved!
TheMmesser Fully agreed ! Can't stand Hann paying with her body Karajan who introduced her all he could to be a faked star. There are two ultimate violinists Grumiaux more Romantic and Heifetz the Perfection, with all others as per an acceptable recording quality technically way below such as Hubermann.. and thus quite hard to compare. Enjoy!
Mutter trying to play faster than anyone else too try and get noticed? Really, that is just pain nonsense you are talking. I have a number Mutter concerto recordings (10+ concertos) and she is FAAAAR from the fastest on the block. In fact, just comparing her Mozart recordings with Grumiaux. Her recordings with Karajan and Muti, as well as the video recordings on UA-cam with Camerata Salzburg. In all these concertos Mutter is in fact about 2 minutes per concerto SLOWER than Grumiaux, except for number 3 where she is 4+ minutes slower.
Grumiaux and Heifetz the two ultimate violists and the rest way below them - perhaps for your personal tastes that may apply, but for me that is just plain nonsense. I agree regarding Heifetz. But I prefer Francescatti and Kogan any day above Grumiaux, and even prefer Mutter's Mozart recordings above Grumiaux's. You are welcome to disagree with me on this. Just keep in mind, in the end it all comes down to personal taste. But don't proclaim your own personal taste as the ultimate fact regarding who the greatest violinists were.
While I don't disagree with your sentiments on not playing this concert (and indeed s e v e r a l other Mozart pieces) too fast, truth is that Mutter's is indeed slower than this, one of the recordings available here on the tube is 2 minute 30 seconds (or 7,5%) slower than this. I enjoy both versions, but I am weird (?) and demand the andante movement to be played even slower, with more air between the phrases.
Grumiaux is Mozart...nobody plays Mozart's violin concertos 1/3/4/5 better. Why? It's all so clear, in tune and with a profound Mozart edge. And.....ha ha...Grumiaux was my professor. Mozart was his child.
God, that final movement sounds so Tchaikovsky-ish! I wonder if Tchaikovsky liked this concerto as much as I hypothesize he did. I know he adored Mozart's music.
Not surprisingly! Tchaikovsky was one of the first internationally known Russian composer and he was in charge of "baroque" and "classical" period in Russian music - amid he lived in the time of romanticism - squeezed into a short amount of time. His violin concerto sometimes sounds like a ballet music written by Glück, so does Rococo variations.
Thank you for posting that info. Amazing quality recording and phenomenal musicianship from the entire orchestra, soloist and conductor. Absolutely beautiful!

Arthur Grumiaux plays the violin like he is breathing, very fluent , in tune , so fast , and full of expressions, He was really the best...

Yes! Grew up listening to these over and over and over and over. LOL
La meilleure interprétation du Concerto pour violon n° 5 de Mozart. Certifié intergalactique !
Tiens ! Le certifié intergalactique revient ! Il n'a donc pas passé l'agrégation ?
By far the best play of this Mozart's concerto, so full of life, dynamic, clear, joyful and dramatic .
if you like this rendition you'll love szeryngs Mozart
I suspect that those who never listened to this Mozart's N5 never listened to Mozart N5 as IT IS ... Grumiaux, Colin Davis , LSO, SUPERB, pure refinement
He is a very pure musician and human being. I like listening to him.
Clear and beautiful sound !!!
The way He plays the violin is obviously not present-day, but He has an uncommon grace and sound...thank you for posting this video!!
Hi, would you explain more on present-day way of play a violin?
More accused vibrato, for example. Just listen this concerto played by Joshua Bell and return to Grumiaux. The difference will be so clear by then.
I agree with you. I listened to Grumiaux when i was a little giri but I always feel inside something very special everytime I listen to play him..
Bravo! This a beautiful rendition of how Mozart should sound on the violin! Love the picture of Salzburg too!

I read somewhere that no less a violinist than Szeryng said "Grumiaux taught all of us how to play Mozart"
WOW ! True , and who am I to dissent from great Szering ???
If true and attributable to Szeryng, that is high and credible praise.
First I listened this Concerto No. 5 with Zimmermann, then shortly after with Gidon Kremer and at last with Grumieaux. To my opinion this third performance was the best.
good ranking. please listen Yehudi Menuhin performance of this Concerto.
