When we moved to our current home I occasionally would notice an owl on the power line ….fast forward a few months and I started looking for her nightly, she’d sit on the line and swoop down three or four times grabbing lizards or rat snakes…..the really do take notice, as the more I began making it a routine the closer she’d get. Until one night she went to fly down for what I thought was her typical swoop and grab, BUT she didn’t she actually came down to land and sat there about 15ft from me for two or so minutes …..as time went on she’d come closer and closer, fast forward 4 years and 2 or 3 times a week when the street is quiet she come in for a landing about three feet from me and stay a few minutes while I softly whisper to her. It NEVER gets old❤️
I hear barred owls on my property in the white mountains of Maine. Last week, right over my head, in a huge old hemlock tree an owl suddenly joined another, and they caterwauled for about two minutes. Branches were breaking and I recorded the sounds on my phone. I had NEVER seen an owl before while living in the city. I LOVE these owls. Love them. Thank you for this great video love it.

Just wanted to say thank you for making this documentary. We hear them often but have yet to see them in the woods surrounding out house. They have some of the eeriest nighttime calls!

We have a pair of barred owls that keep getting closer and closer now. I know they have to be comfortable with getting close. I've heard babies for a while now but they're not in the same place as the newest ones. I live in middle Tennessee and WAY out in the country. Our backyard is a HUGE bluff with a beautiful clear creek below it. Very close to our deck. They like to land in the yard and check us out. This is not my first experience with the barred owls but it is for my husband. A few years ago I had at least 20 that wasn't afraid of nothing. They hung out on my truck, the deck, front porch and they followed me in and out of my driveway. It was amazing. Your excitement about them is really cool. I think my husband is terrified because he has never seen a owl until now. I wish you could see our backyard because you would flip out. Thanks so much for sharing your exciting experience. P.S. My husband in a carpenter so I will be having a box for them.... LoL Thanks again
Incredible capture ! BARRED owl always show up in my life... we have nesting pair in my back yard which is mountain of Sugarbush ski resort in vermont the vocalization have been incredible... thanks for sharing i will look forward to hearing the babies in the yard now...

Love your video it was exactly the kind of video I was looking for. Thank you. So thrilling to see these owls stories and was so affected by your enthususiasism. My fiance and I had a similar experience finding, following and communicating with three owlettes we had spotted on a branch near dusk in a nature preserve. Eventually they came when we called them and it was almost like they enjoyed our showing up and calling for them. One time when I called them they followed us in the woods while we walked the path. A couple of weeks before the owlets left to find their own nests, the female and male adults once had a courting serenade with one another for about 20 minutes on a branch above our path delighted. I felt like they had waited for us to arrive as we walked slowly down the path in the full moon until we stood beneath them. Interacting with these wild owls is one of the most exciting things I have ever done. Watching your video and your enthusiasm brought all of this wonderful experience with the thrill and excitement back.
Wow amazing story, my father always tells me how much they love being around humans and after a few years of experience with them I would have to agree. They seem so playful when they are babies!!

I just LOVED this!! How rewarding to have watched the mating to the fledglings learning how to live as owls. And I didn't think it looked easy at all to place that nest box where you did. But it was a match made in Heaven. They moved right in!! Congratulations!!!
The excitement in your voice and your face is understandable and so endearing! It's neat you took the time to build a habitat, study the pair (and their children), and documented all of it. This is a treasure for so many reasons.
I was looking for whippoorwills when I stumbled on this. What a treat Frank. You remember we had one that came to Rockerfeller Center in the New York Christmas tree. Made headline news and became a celebrity. Great patients thanks again.
You captured some really nice clips. The one where two of them on a branch begin sort of holding talons and touching each other is awesome. I'm not sure what that was all about but so cool to watch.

Frank, Thanks for a great documentary! My husband and I moved to our current home in Wisconsin over 20 years ago. The first night here, we heard what sounded like monkeys. Now we know the Barreds can get pretty raucus. At the time, our daughter was 9 and snapped pics of 3 owlets in the woods on the side of our house. Life was busy with running kids around to their activities and both of us working full time. In the past 5 years or so, we realized a pair of Barreds was hanging out on our property and we felt like we were " chosen"! They are so cool! This year I was able to take pics with my phone right from my bedroom window! We never saw owlets since all those years ago but everything I read told me owls would fledge by late April or early May so you gave me hope for later this month or next, plus now I know to listen for that juvenile call. Thanks again for sharing!!
Hi, thanks for watching! I love your story. That’s amazing that they’re still around. I would have to say it’s unlikely that it’s the original pair that’s around but would not be surprised at all if it is their offspring. And yes it is that time, unfortunately the owls haven’t used the box at my dad’s house the past couple years but I have a couple friends who have boxes/nest on their property right now and some of the outlets have made their way while some are still in. Keep your ears peeled for that sound, I bet you’ll hear it soon!

Great video! I have two baby owls in or back woods and the one was on the ground looking for cicadas and flew one foot away from me! It was awesome! I still see both of them in the late afternoon and they really cry at night! They are so pretty!
I’m also addicted to my barred owls and was so lucky to see them mate last year while I was videotaping the female in my water maple , they was quick about 5 seconds, in February, then sit side by side. Week later in my back water maple! No owl box but they usually sit on same branches, come spring I seen a new one and I’m sure it was one of the pair that I witnessed! So cute and excited I can call them in, they r used to me, and it took me 4 years to finally see them, I’m so in love with them we have woods and creek behind our house, so many incredible pics and videos. I’m new to posting, but it’s the highlight of my day I look forward to the evenings and have landed only inches from me on my deck talking to me, and wondering “she doesn’t look like a owl” but will continue to hang out. I love them and have been blessed to b able to capture such beautiful nature!!

I can not fathom that some bureaucrats in California came up an open season on the Barred Owl in order to save the Spotted Owl. After blaming humans and costing taxpayers billions they now have decided that the loss of the Spotted Owl is due to the Barred Owl
I just moved to a wooded home in Kentucky and bless my heart I have a pair of barred owls here. I use my iphone and call them in at dusk almost every evening and they come in together. I am so in awe of them. Came across your film and love it and all the information you provide. My summer project is to build a nesting box and get it hung before fall. Love love love this film

I have breeding barred owls in my neighborhood. They started vocalizing while I was writing this. One has flown next to the drivers side of my mom's car. I see them all the time. However they disappear during winter. I hear the owlets hissing and I know that they are back.🦉

I'm from Connecticut as well but I live in Virginia I have over 11 acres and I hear the barred owls I'll put my Bluetooth speaker with owls and I get responses pretty awesome they also fly over me at night scary though

Unfortunately this year I didn’t get to document the owls. And I’m also pretty confident that one of them didn’t make it. This year I decided to put a ladder in front of the box and climb up it and look inside. There were two babies in there. When I went to go back to my dads house and look for them in this year I never found more than one 😢

We too have a mated pair of barred owls have had their first owlets and they are fledged and learning all around us. Its spectacular to see and experience up close! Not sure if i can send video but took a couple pics and video with my old old s9 phoen today. You did a great job with this sharing spectacular photography and film and just the joy of becoming accepted in the woods by such an incredible creature. What I believe is these animals share themselves and their lives with us only when they choose, and feel safe. Glsd to see you also took the covid times and learned snd explored the natural world. Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for all the beautiful images. So cool you got them in your box. I grew up in East Haddam. Mill Road. Lots of Barred Owls. That wheezy squeal they're doing is a food-begging cry. Females use it as a solicitation squeal but it is less raspy. I record sounds for Cornell University and Barred Owls have quite a vast repertoire. I love the females voice better. Thanks again. Enjoy.

I have a pair of red headed wood peckers nesting in a pine tree just outside my shop. I can sit and watch them for hours. Thanks again!
Amazing footage. I love watching the owls that land near my house and on my fence. Unfortunately I found one down the street from my house dead near a busy road. Probably hit by a car while hunting at night. I was told by animal control not to bury it so I removed it and placed it in my back yard for the neighborhood fox. It sat there for a few days and last night the owl was gone. Circle of life. Sad but it's part of life.
Hey thank you very much. I always get excited when other people tell me they get to see owls on their property too. I have found a couple dead over the past year myself. Honestly I pick them both up off the side of the road, brought them home and took a really good look at them and did the same thing you did. Put them out for something else to benefit from it. I did cut the talons off of them to to have as a keep safe.

I was lucky enough to see the two Eastern Screech Owls in my yard actually mate one night at the beginning of this year! It was shortly after I first discovered them and started learning about them so I didn’t realize what I was seeing until after but it was incredible to see something so rare!!

I do the same with my blue tooth, I miss them it’s been very cold in Louisville Ky. This end.of November, but looking forward to getting back out there on deck,bundle up, I hear them way out in woods around dinner time 5:00pm, then around 9:30pm for hunting dinner,then 6/7am to wherever they settle in for home to rest.
So gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!! I was blessed enough to witness the nesting season of a beautiful family of Barred Owls a couple years ago in a park near my house, I would walk to the park every evening at dusk and they would be there perching in several different trees, it was the BEST experience, but sadly I didn't see them in the subsequent years. I still watch for them every Spring though! 💓🦉💓🦉

We live in a forested area in Kentucky. These barred owls are here. My first association with them was hearing their spooky hoot. I identified the hoot with the barred owl on UA-cam. They are both scary-looking and cute at the same time. I love that they are so active during the day. Most owls are surreptitious, doing their things under cover at night. So, the barred owl lets us see a part of their life by being out and about when we are awake. This is a very nice video. Thank you for sharing it with us. I’m presuming the three owls’ parents were around also, as you mentioned one flying by with a mouse for one of them. It would have been nice to see more of them as the owls grew. Thanks again.

Great documentary! My girlfriend found a baby Barred Owl in the road just below where we live and I couldn't just let it die, so we took it in, put it in the basement in a cage to raise and possibly heel and return to the wild. I live in Eastern Kentucky, so owls of all types are plentiful here but I was clueless on raising one. And trust me, it's been a learning experience to say the least and watching your documentary was a tremendous help plus a joy to watch. It helped me put in to a time frame on how to progress with teaching Peanut(our owl). Now to build and owl box. Great job.

@@FrankDiNardi Update, we thought he might have been ready, he was reeking havoc in my basement. Juvenile calls nonstop. I wouldn't have called him aggressive more like demanding. He was flying really well in the basement, so I thought he might be taken in by another pair of adults, so we released him one evening in the barn. My neighbor saw him the next morning setting on a piece of farm equipment. No sign of him for 5 days, but one night I was outside calling with a Bluetooth speaker and the hills literally came alive with barred owls, right down to caterwauling, which I've lived and hunted in the country all my life and had never heard one do that! Anyhow, long story short, he came back and is here with us again. I guess we're his parents now.
I found your video while scanning the tube. Excellent. Extremely excellent. I have a mated pair of barred owls in the stand of trees behind my house. Many many nights i have laid in my bed listening to them call. A video can not convey what it feels like. This is something that is awe inspiring. As humans we assume that we are ascendant, yet our best science, our best technology, can not produce a wonder like this. Thank you for this doc

I lived in Massachusetts and they only come out at night there but now I live in Florida and have a campground I saw one at 3:00 in the afternoon walking the dog German Shepherd and the dog park area I was surprised. I live in New Windsor NY & the property behind our house is owned by St Francis cemetery. So those woods hopefully will remain wooded. We were sitting on the deck this summer & heard the barred owl. Then we heard another in a different location but close by. I have yet to see them & will start exploring. Thank you for your video, nicely done.

Interacting with these wild owls is one of the most exciting things I have ever done. Watching your video and your enthusiasm brought all of this wonderful experience with the thrill and excitement back.
Wow amazing story, my father always tells me how much they love being around humans and after a few years of experience with them I would have to agree. They seem so playful when they are babies!!

Frank, Thanks for a great documentary! My husband and I moved to our current home in Wisconsin over 20 years ago. The first night here, we heard what sounded like monkeys. Now we know the Barreds can get pretty raucus. At the time, our daughter was 9 and snapped pics of 3 owlets in the woods on the side of our house. Life was busy with running kids around to their activities and both of us working full time. In the past 5 years or so, we realized a pair of Barreds was hanging out on our property and we felt like we were " chosen"! They are so cool! This year I was able to take pics with my phone right from my bedroom window! We never saw owlets since all those years ago but everything I read told me owls would fledge by late April or early May so you gave me hope for later this month or next, plus now I know to listen for that juvenile call. Thanks again for sharing!!
Hi, thanks for watching! I love your story. That’s amazing that they’re still around. I would have to say it’s unlikely that it’s the original pair that’s around but would not be surprised at all if it is their offspring. And yes it is that time, unfortunately the owls haven’t used the box at my dad’s house the past couple years but I have a couple friends who have boxes/nest on their property right now and some of the outlets have made their way while some are still in. Keep your ears peeled for that sound, I bet you’ll hear it soon!

Great video! I have two baby owls in or back woods and the one was on the ground looking for cicadas and flew one foot away from me! It was awesome! I still see both of them in the late afternoon and they really cry at night! They are so pretty!
I’m also addicted to my barred owls and was so lucky to see them mate last year while I was videotaping the female in my water maple , they was quick about 5 seconds, in February, then sit side by side. Week later in my back water maple! No owl box but they usually sit on same branches, come spring I seen a new one and I’m sure it was one of the pair that I witnessed! So cute and excited I can call them in, they r used to me, and it took me 4 years to finally see them, I’m so in love with them we have woods and creek behind our house, so many incredible pics and videos. I’m new to posting, but it’s the highlight of my day I look forward to the evenings and have landed only inches from me on my deck talking to me, and wondering “she doesn’t look like a owl” but will continue to hang out. I love them and have been blessed to b able to capture such beautiful nature!!
Wow that is amazing, I’m so happy you get to experience that. They were the absolute light of my life for that time.! I just had a baby girl three months ago so she stole the show but I certainly think about my owls all the time!

I can not fathom that some bureaucrats in California came up an open season on the Barred Owl in order to save the Spotted Owl. After blaming humans and costing taxpayers billions they now have decided that the loss of the Spotted Owl is due to the Barred Owl

I read about this happening in Washington, too. It breaks my heart! We have Barred owls near us in WI and grown to love them!!

I just moved to a wooded home in Kentucky and bless my heart I have a pair of barred owls here. I use my iphone and call them in at dusk almost every evening and they come in together. I am so in awe of them. Came across your film and love it and all the information you provide. My summer project is to build a nesting box and get it hung before fall. Love love love this film

I have breeding barred owls in my neighborhood. They started vocalizing while I was writing this. One has flown next to the drivers side of my mom's car. I see them all the time. However they disappear during winter. I hear the owlets hissing and I know that they are back.🦉

I'm from Connecticut as well but I live in Virginia I have over 11 acres and I hear the barred owls I'll put my Bluetooth speaker with owls and I get responses pretty awesome they also fly over me at night scary though

Unfortunately this year I didn’t get to document the owls. And I’m also pretty confident that one of them didn’t make it. This year I decided to put a ladder in front of the box and climb up it and look inside. There were two babies in there. When I went to go back to my dads house and look for them in this year I never found more than one 😢

We too have a mated pair of barred owls have had their first owlets and they are fledged and learning all around us. Its spectacular to see and experience up close! Not sure if i can send video but took a couple pics and video with my old old s9 phoen today. You did a great job with this sharing spectacular photography and film and just the joy of becoming accepted in the woods by such an incredible creature. What I believe is these animals share themselves and their lives with us only when they choose, and feel safe. Glsd to see you also took the covid times and learned snd explored the natural world. Ill have to check your channel for more but this came up when I was searching to learn more about their adolescent and maternal behavior. Some exceptional footage abd behavior you captutered here. Nothing short of magic! Hope you are continuing on your passionate and learning journey.

Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for all the beautiful images. So cool you got them in your box. I grew up in East Haddam. Mill Road. Lots of Barred Owls. That wheezy squeal they're doing is a food-begging cry. Females use it as a solicitation squeal but it is less raspy. I record sounds for Cornell University and Barred Owls have quite a vast repertoire. I love the females voice better. Thanks again. Enjoy.

Amazing footage. I love watching the owls that land near my house and on my fence. Unfortunately I found one down the street from my house dead near a busy road. Probably hit by a car while hunting at night. I was told by animal control not to bury it so I removed it and placed it in my back yard for the neighborhood fox. It sat there for a few days and last night the owl was gone. Circle of life. Sad but it's part of life.
Hey thank you very much. I always get excited when other people tell me they get to see owls on their property too. I have found a couple dead over the past year myself. Honestly I pick them both up off the side of the road, brought them home and took a really good look at them and did the same thing you did. Put them out for something else to benefit from it. I did cut the talons off of them to to have as a keep safe.

I was lucky enough to see the two Eastern Screech Owls in my yard actually mate one night at the beginning of this year! It was shortly after I first discovered them and started learning about them so I didn’t realize what I was seeing until after but it was incredible to see something so rare!!

I do the same with my blue tooth, I miss them it’s been very cold in Louisville Ky. This end.of November, but looking forward to getting back out there on deck,bundle up, I hear them way out in woods around dinner time 5:00pm, then around 9:30pm for hunting dinner,then 6/7am to wherever they settle in for home to rest.

So gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!! I was blessed enough to witness the nesting season of a beautiful family of Barred Owls a couple years ago in a park near my house, I would walk to the park every evening at dusk and they would be there perching in several different trees, it was the BEST experience, but sadly I didn't see them in the subsequent years. I still watch for them every Spring though! 💓🦉💓🦉

Thanks for these pictures. I often see barred owls in the woods next ot my house. I like how they will watch humans and not fly away if we do not get too close. You also have a marvelously steady hand with that telescopic lens. You've got me interested in installing an owl box in that wood.

We live in a forested area in Kentucky. These barred owls are here. My first association with them was hearing their spooky hoot. I identified the hoot with the barred owl on UA-cam. They are both scary-looking and cute at the same time. I love that they are so active during the day. Most owls are surreptitious, doing their things under cover at night. So, the barred owl lets us see a part of their life by being out and about when we are awake. This is a very nice video. Thank you for sharing it with us. I’m presuming the three owls’ parents were around also, as you mentioned one flying by with a mouse for one of them. It would have been nice to see more of them as the owls grew. Thanks again.

I’m encouraged, as we live along the Wisconsin River, next to woods. I can often hear them, but haven’t seen them yet. I’ve put in my request for my husband to make an owl box. We have many burr oak, maple and red pine trees on our property and surrounding. Thank you so much for sharing!
Great documentary! My girlfriend found a baby Barred Owl in the road just below where we live and I couldn't just let it die, so we took it in, put it in the basement in a cage to raise and possibly heel and return to the wild. I live in Eastern Kentucky, so owls of all types are plentiful here but I was clueless on raising one. And trust me, it's been a learning experience to say the least and watching your documentary was a tremendous help plus a joy to watch. It helped me put in to a time frame on how to progress with teaching Peanut(our owl). Now to build and owl box. Great job.

@@FrankDiNardi Update, we thought he might have been ready, he was reeking havoc in my basement. Juvenile calls nonstop. I wouldn't have called him aggressive more like demanding. He was flying really well in the basement, so I thought he might be taken in by another pair of adults, so we released him one evening in the barn. My neighbor saw him the next morning setting on a piece of farm equipment. No sign of him for 5 days, but one night I was outside calling with a Bluetooth speaker and the hills literally came alive with barred owls, right down to caterwauling, which I've lived and hunted in the country all my life and had never heard one do that! Anyhow, long story short, he came back and is here with us again. I guess we're his parents now.

Many many nights i have laid in my bed listening to them call. A video can not convey what it feels like. This is something that is awe inspiring. I live in New Windsor NY & the property behind our house is owned by St Francis cemetery. So those woods hopefully will remain wooded. We were sitting on the deck this summer & heard the barred owl. Then we heard another in a different location but close by. I have yet to see them & will start exploring. Thank you for your video, nicely done.
