Modern middle classes usually have debt against their property portfolio which means they are tied to a working life style to pay the debts against their assets. The upper classes own many assets and land, debt free, and can afford to live an idle lifestyle enriched from the rent they collect from the working classes (whether asset owning debt slaves or asset-less wages slaves) who must use the land owned to live which the upper classes monopolise.

It’s not an outdated concept. It’s working paycheques to paycheques and being one job loss away from a serious financial crisis eg - being on the dole for a while and faltering on a mortgage or rent.
As a former bank manager I had many customers whilst working in London who were in this position all earning substantial salaries.

I was born into a working class family and was myself working class for many years yet now i would be in the upper end of middle class. To be honest i still consider myself working class. I just have less financial stresses to worry about.
