I love you are setting this up in the dorm. I myself am in my third year at UNCA, Asheville, NC. I have been in the hobby for a few years now and am just thrilled to try nano out for once and bring something to my dorm I can enjoy.
Hello random person looking at the comments 😊 That is amazing! This is my goal for my aquarium to look very natural... right now I have a better fish in a three gallon but I hope to update the setup to make a nano tank!
always need to keep me in suspense. cant wait for the next video man. plus its cool your keeping a salt water tank in your dorm room. I guess its one of the cool things of being a young reefer.
Thank you so much! Clearest video instructions I've seen for a new reef tank. I'm 100% new to aquariums, and want to start a small nano reef. I purchased a Fluval Edge (12gal). I added my live sand and salt water, and thought I did something wrong b/c the water was cloudy for a long time. Good to know that's normal! Also, I was looking for more info on the artificial rock, and you provided it! Keep it up. Thank you!
Make sure you never forget a water change and constantly monitor your tank. Small tanks are the hardest type of saltwater tank to maintain succesfully; contrary to what you'd think, going as large as money will allow is the right move for a new hobbyist; nano tanks crash in hours, large tanks crash over days.
@@coralfish12g why didnt u use a skimmer instead of media reactor cuzu coulve just put carbon on the racks u put sponges on theres enough hi flow there and skimmer wouldve been more useful also is 11g the total water volume including the AIO filter chmabers or just u to the false wall where the fish can go
Nice looking set up.As you said, adding live rock will bring in pests, but so will the live sand you are using, and any corals you bring in that are not dipped!!. If you have a bare bottom tank, then you will not always have a big swing in parameters. The rock (even if it is not real ocean rock) will hold enough bacteria (even denitrifying bacteria), so you don't have to use sand in any tank, even a 6g nano. The sand could help buffer the tank against P.H, but is not always needed. You don't need to wait a few weeks to cycle a tank. If you have live sand, then you just need to wait a few days to make sure nothing in the sand has died, and caused an ammonia spike. The sand is already live, so the tank is instantly cycled A nono skimmer is always better than corbon sponges. Adding water from an established tank, won't do much to help it cycle faster. The water will contain very little nitrifying bacteria. The water could contain ich or velvet (would not matter that much as you have no fish, and ich/velvet dies in 48 hours). The water could contain phosphate and nitrate!!!!.Just trying to be help you and others, understand this often frustrating hobby.
+CoralFish12g ise Ellinas?. my self im very good in fresh water fish. .but i have not much experience in salt water. . what do u mean we only have to ad fresh water in the salt water tank?
+Ελληνας μεταναστών Vαι είμαι, when the water in the tank evaporates, the salt gets left behind. So to balance it back out you only add freshwater so that you don't keep making the water saltier.
I love my jbj 3g picotope! Upgrade the lighting and get the smallest powerhead you can find and it makes a snazzy little counter top reef. I run a wavepoint 16w 10,000k daylight/super blue led's and it's done a great job so far
I have a Chaeto problem. At first it grows well, but then tiny bits of it turn white & die. I have bright lights that I run all day & fairly stable salinity. I do not have any animals yet, but I am dosing 2 drops of Excel Flourish each day. I don't if it maybe grows until it exceeds the amount of fertilizer available, then starts to die?? I also have 1 small live rock w/ Coralline algae & diatoms on it in the system. Any ideas?
so what if you dont have water from another tank. Is adding bacteria starer okay if you are eager or should I return my sand for live and maybe add a shrimp, or buy some live rock. I keep haring everyone say cycle but BRS has a you tube he uses bacteria starter and adds fish next day. Are the people saying you must cycle just old school?
I've got a bit of an odd question... I work with porcelain clay and have made tank decorations for freshwater tanks. Would a coral adhere it's self to the non-glazed porcelain since it's porous? I want to make a tank decoration I can put corals on, but I want to make sure it would be ok to put corals on the porcelain.
Good video but, no need to add water from an old tank, this water does not really help with a cycle. You still need to let the tank cycle even with live sand, and you need some sort of ammonia source, you can't just leave it and expect it to cycle unless you are using live rock. You can definitely do a nano bare water without sand tank. Once the rock becomes live, it will act as the main harbor for bacteria, if you have enough rock you don't necessarily need sand. Sand can be helpful in other ways, but i'm not going to go into that right now. Also there is no need for a protein skimmer in such a small tank, however, a small reactor like the one you have can be helpful depending what you run in it. Good luck on this tank man!
Hello George, a question based on personal experience.... you install a seawatertank in a dorm....can you even sleep with the noise? And if you can, do you have a room-mate who is fine with the noise also? Personally I even had problems with the noise-issues of a sweetwatertank in my bedroom, I had to chose all components specially on low-noise specs... Keep up with your unique upudates please !
+danny van agtmael My tank barely makes a sound. Especially compared to the sound of a fan that you will likely be running in a dorm. My roommate doesn't mind the sound because I don't think he can even hear it. Just a small pump. Our fans make more noise! Thanks
I am trying to convert a regular clear 15 hex gal sea clear acrylic tank into a salt water. I need help picking out equipment or creating the filtering system. Any suggestions to building my own or buying a specific product?
So what fish you gonna put in the tank when it is done cycling? I have 2 percula clownfish and a valentini puffer fish. They are great starter fish even if you like puffers the valentini puffers are great starter fish.
+CoralFish12g thanks so much for the fast response. Oh I had a question and can't find it online. I have BTAs in my cube and recently got some maroon clowns and they started hosting the next day. But the BTAs don't seem to like it much. The anemone was fine at first but now they shrink and hide and the clowns seem to be fought at them and sometimes nip and force themselves in the anemone when they close at night. Should I leave them or remove them
+Eva Dominic I would try and feed them but yeah Maroons are really aggressive especially if they have not officially paired up yet. I might take them out depending on which you want more the fish or anemone.
i have a 120 gallon salt tank with a 1 puffer and 1 snowflake eel and im having a hard time getting the ammonia to 0 its always .25 even when i do 25% water changes.....any good advice???
Brian Delp Hopefully it’s leveled off by now! I would see if you’re vacuuming your gravel or if you have anything decaying in your tank? There is filter media to help with your ammonia such as carbon and ammonia reducing chips, and you can also add a half amount of bacteria starter to help combat the ammonia
hi....i need to know can i setup 1feet by 1 feet nano marine tank??? many told me its not possible as it will not survie and last long...i just want 2 clown fish and anemone in that...will that be ok???also which anemone is recommended??
what are you using in the media reactor at this stage? I have just started a nuvo 20 and i have the innovative marine media reactor, but i have not installed it yet. I do have bio pellets but i am not sure if i should install it during the cycling process. thanks!
Hi my name is Cameron Brown and I have been subscribed to your channel I have a few questions I need to ask you is how do you let the tank run all week not trying to being mean or anything like that because I am new to the saltwater hobby and I am supposed to be getting clown fish and last question I got the tank and the live sand do I have keep a eye on the water begin cloudy because I feel like I am going to get missed up and 3rd question is how do you know if the sainty level of the salt is good for clown fish
hey george i just got a gold headed goby hes in a 15 gallon tank and i was wondering if you had any tips on keeping him healthy ive heard they can be quit difficult when it comes to feeding
I transferred a 5 gallon tank to a 20 gallon today I’m wondering if I can put my inverts in it already or I have to wait ? And how long will my coral live w out lights?
I want a tank just like that. How many gallons is it? How did you get it like that? Like what did you tell the people at that website to get it that way?
+Jesse Van Norman Hi, it is almost 11 gallons. You need to reach out to Phuong at Oceanbox Designs. Talk to him and tell him you want a tank similar to mine. You will work it out with him and you can get one too. There is a link to his website in the description.
When starting a new tank is it necessary to boost the ph? I understand reef tanks need a ph around 8.2 and given that RODI and distilled water is closer to 7, how do people combat this problem? Im starting my first system soon and this just came to my attention.
''dont like live rock cause it can bring bad stuff'' dumps used water from a store in the tank XD that was kinda funny, sorry for the comment, its a nice video and nicely explained.
I do freshwater tanks and I have one with sand. I know in freshwater you have to disturb the sand once in a while to avoid air bubbles turning toxic... do you have to do the same with a reef tank?
only if the bed is storing high amount of methane. Which in a small tank you shouldnt have that problem unless you have lots of detritus going to waste. A protein skimmer helps with this.
Hi George! I loved this video so much, I ordered a mariculture bonsai. It hasn’t come yet but it’s going into my 3 month old Coralife Biocube 16g. I’m just starting out with no experience in saltwater, only freshwater tanks. I have a reef rock in there now. It was a horrible choice and that’s why I want to replace it. The corals are safely on racks. I’ve got 3 fish, a cleaner shrimp and some snails. All are doing great. My question is: Am I going to kill anything changing out the rock to the bonsai? Is there anything I need to know to prevent that? I have a sand substrate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Any good suggestions on how to stabilize PH? I have a reef tank I try to keep at 8.3. I'll use an 8.3 buffer which will do the trick... for about a day or two. Then it'll fluctuate and drop as low as 7.8/9 It seems like a never ending go around. Any tricks up your sleeve?
You can purchase the tank in this video HERE: bit.ly/3yGsViw

Thanks! My sister and I are learning to set up a tank. You videos are quick and easy to follow
nevr been a salt water stud always a fresh water scrub your videos have inspired me to keep saltwater stuff 😇🇳🇵
I get that some fishkeepers want it done REALLY FAST but in the end going slow can make alot of diffrence!
Cool that you're supporting oceanbox designs, really cool dude I remember when he just had ideas and now it's his reality
+Luke magnia Yeah! I know it has been a tough journey for him but I think if he keeps working at it, he can make something big of it!
Sweet. Im glad you are still reefing and making videos. Keep it up!
+goxcpre Thanks, yes keep and eye out for them I'm making lots more!
+CoralFish12g seeing my buddies dorm cube is what got me into reefing so I am loving this tank!
Great to see you back in action...nice video

Love the look of brand new tanks, so clean
+Hayden Boler (Bolerboy) I love setting up new tanks for that reason!
+CoralFish12g I just set up a 55 gallon cichlid, it looks so good right NOW.... Haha just waiting for that 8 week shine to wear off... 😒

I can't be the only one who heard this tone the whole time.
Great video by the way
Your super good at this bro!
Cool man. Simple and easy.
+pittbully13 Thanks!
Excelent explanation and clear English. Thanks for that!
Simple fast good- this might be the fast cheap start to reefing most of us needed!
Excited to watch the progression

Cool setup!
Nice George! Looking forward to the next video.
+Rory Vermeulen It is coming soon.
Cool video! I just got a nano going up and running pretty recently
Good one. Very simple steps. What are you gonna do come summertime. Pack it up
+MASS Aquariums why not? it doesn't weight that much.... 2 buckets for half the water and done
Sounds good to me
+MASS Aquariums Yes, I will drain it half way and then just put it in the car for home!
Bright fit it you have. #yoda
+CoralFish12g If you transfer the tank to the new location, would you do the same thing all over again as new tank? Like nitrogen cycle?
My new How To Hero !!!
great video keep up the good work love the new tank
+Mikey Stokes Thanks! So many more updates coming!
I think a new version of this video with current setups and products could be cool
Dude this videos helped me so much man!!! Keep up the great content
Good video as usual!!!!! Good luck with college.
+chester 786 Thanks!
Great video!
Nice man, I was wondering if the Radion was going to make it to this tank. Nice update, I like the Bonsai rock!

CoralFish12g Wow, that woulf be awesome! Hope you can.
Ok, I have heard of media reactors, but have no clue what they do or how they operate, are they kinda like protein skimmers in function and operation?
That's one sexy nano tank! Do they make this in 40 gallons?
I believe this is custom

Could I use beach water and beach sand to do my tank? i live near the beach
I would like setup almost identical to yours wut should I do. And how much would your setup cost including some nice coral and fish

Liam Ackermann the salt you mix to your water usually boost it up close to 8.2 or so
what are you using to feed the nitrobacter and nitrosomonas bacterium in the cycling process. They need some ammonification you know.
What's your opinion on the fluval starter 13.5gallon starter tank?
''dont like live rock cause it can bring bad stuff'' dumps used water from a store in the tank XD that was kinda funny, sorry for the comment, its a nice video and nicely explained.
