    We raise primarily hay here in Northeast Pennsylvania and it seems that the horse ladies we sell to want Timothy hay or second/third cutting grass hay. So what we do is plant a Timothy/Orchard grass blend. We use a blend called sale topper from Kings Agriseeds. The Timothy shows in the bale for the first cutting and then the orchard grass provides the second and third cuttings since the Timothy won’t come back make a second cutting. Good luck with your new hay field. I can’t wait to see that mower and crimper in action as well as the 77 with that plow. Keep on keeping on.

    This will be most interesting to watch you develop it into a hay pasture. If the soil is sandy to any depth which I think that you expect that it is then it is currently really acid. Some lime on it before ploughing and some more after ploughing will, in our experience, produce the quickest turn around to correct the situation. Real acid soils will reduce your options about what seed types you plant.
    I would totally agree that early Fall is the best time to reseed a pasture for all the reasons you mentioned. Keep your eyes skinned for a cheap land roller to firm the seed bed and push down any stones / rocks.

    Field reclaims are fun. Got a relative that's got 40 some acres in crp that he wants to rent out once the contract is filled. That'd be a fun field to reclaim but I figured that it wouldn't be worth the hassle to do as crp likes to grow trees and big ditches.

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy

It holds water like a son of a gun when the creek floods and all the rain comes off the old railroad tracks. Good pasture ground though. That 40 acres hasn't been farmed in 22 years it's been that long.

    Plant 40% timothy/ 40% orchard / 20% alfalfa. This seems to be a good variety horses need in the diet. If you don’t want to mess with alfalfa do a orchard/timothy mix.

  • @Ham68229
    @Ham68229 2 роки тому

    Alfalfa, Brome and Timothy mix Ethan, you can mix a very small amount of Red Clover. Too much clover and the horses will "slobber". The Clover will feed both the Brome and Timothy. Or you could seed it in Prairie grass, that's another grass that's good for horses. That would be your best option "grass" wise.
